The 11 Best Beaches in Maine

"One of just a few beaches in Acadia, the aptly named Sand Beach is a natural pocket beach about 300 yards wide. While half the beach is sand, the other half consists of mussel and crab shells, plus the remains of other various sea creatures. Sand Beach has long been a cinematic destination, with scenes of the beach appearing in films such as "The Cider House Rules." - Travel + Leisure Editors

The Most Dog-Friendly Vacations in the United States

"National parks are among the most spectacular destinations to vacation with pups. Compared to big cities, they’re typically less crowded and expensive, ensuring a more stress-free experience for dogs in unfamiliar environments (and less fees for you), with plenty of room to prance around. Many national parks, however, restrict dogs to a few specific trails, if any, or certain areas only during quieter times of year. But Acadia National Park is one of the most dog-friendly parks in the country, with 100 miles of hiking trails open to dogs, as long as they’re leashed at all times. The flat Jordan Pond Path, a 3-mile loop around a shimmering lake, is a particular standout, as is the out-and-back Ocean Path Trail that begins at Sand Beach, where dogs are allowed during the off-season (mid-September to June). There’s also a Bark Ranger program that teaches owners about the Rules of B.A.R.K. (Bag your pet’s waste, Always leash your pet, Respect wildlife, Know where to go) and rewards dogs with special Bark Ranger collar tags. In the gateway town of Bar Harbor, you’ll find dog-friendly eateries, like Beal’s Lobster Pier, Peekytoe Provisions, and Side Street Cafe for all your lobster roll and haddock Reuben needs, while pet-friendly lodging runs the gamut from the casual, like Belle Isle Motel with its six acres of field space for your pup to explore, to the luxe, like Balance Rock Inn, where they’re welcome around the outdoor common grounds." - Matt Kirouac

Small yet beautiful beach with a great view. Has some steps to go down to access the beach. The water was cold even in July.

Stopped here while exploring Bar Harbor! Take the shuttle and do not drive up! You will thank me for this advice! Beautiful beach! Peaceful and relaxing!

Google
We enjoyed the beach but prepare yourself for parking. It’s a nightmare. Go before 8am and after 4:30pm or you’ll walk a country mile just to get there. The beach itself is nice. Windy of course but quite nice.

Google
Beautiful place and can be busy. Parking can get tough but don't hesitate to park on the side of the street (right side) and hike. Great Head is also a hike right next to this beach. Beautiful views from this spot and of course water is cold but great to swim on a hot day or kids to play. Another mile hike to Thunder Hole from here. These spots in Acadia are very busy during day in June, July and August. So better to get there early park and hike near by places.

Google
Cool spot to explore the sandy area or just sit and enjoy the weather. We came a week before peak season and it was still relatively crowded and parking was rough. During peak season they say arrive by 9am or hike in by trail.

Google
It was a beautiful day to go check this place out. The rain had finally stopped and people were out enjoying the park. We were only there to see the landscape but would go back for a day's visit for sure. Huge parking lot, outhouses, very clean place.

Google
Gorgeous to have a sandy beach framed by majestic mountains in the background. There are rocks to climb on and plenty of sand to lounge around on. The beach itself is big, the main issue is parking during busy times. I recommend coming early, doing a hike like beehive, and then heading to the beach after

Google
Sand beach is a beautiful beach to visit in Acadia but the water is soooo cold even in the summer. We couldn't stay in for too long! The beach has a parking lot that gets full very fast and you can also take the island explorer shuttle from the visitor centre to reach it. The beach has restrooms and changing rooms and several amazing trails like the bee hive trail and ocean path trail begin around the beach.

Yelp
I am not a warm weather person, so the chance to go to Acadia National Park on a very cold day seemed like Heaven. It sure was. Off season is the perfect time to visit that particular beach. We had the beach all to ourselves, took an amazing walk while the wind whipped and the sand felt like frozen tundra. The whole experience felt like we were last people on the planet and it was fun to pretend, surrounded by gorgeous views of sky and water. We bought annual passes to the park, so I have a feeling that I'm definitely going back a few more times before the beach fills up with people.

Yelp
Pretty beach with changing rooms and bathrooms. Limited parking in the lot. Parking is allowed on the right side of the street, however the line of cars parked on the side of the road extends to for a long time. My recommendation is getting there early (around 9am). We got the last parking spot in the lot at 9:20 am. The beach is located right after the park entrance.

Yelp
We started our park loop road at 830 in the morning to avoid crowds and it was our first stop. Sand Beach is one of the first major stops along Park Loop Road. This is a scenic beach that is known for its white-sand shoreline and turquoise water. what a clean, soothing, and beautiful beach it is. fall color, hills in the backdrop of turquoise water making it so photogenic. there are 10-20 stairs to go to the beach, I did not see a wheelchair ramp though. there are some walking trails (Which we did not go to). Walk the Great Head Trail or cross Park Loop Road and hike the thrilling Beehive Trail. There are also restrooms and water fill-up stations in the parking lot for visitors. Parking: as it was morning time, we easily got parking. or you can park here and walk to Thunder hole and Otter Cliff but its 2 miles up and down.

Yelp
Catch a shooting star. Amazing to visit Sand Beach at night to marvel at the stars in the sky. Bring a blanket, a thermos of hot cocoa and bug spray. Follow the red lights down the stairs and find a relaxing spot on the beach to enjoy the show. Check the park ranger schedule. Park Ranger Kirk was amazing wielding his laser pointer to point out constellations, the Summer Triangle, the North Star and the Milky Way. He also entertained and engaged families as he made up a story that involved Jack the Lobsta and his travels through Acadia National Park. Maine is a top spot for star gazing. So beautiful and peaceful as you hear the waves softly along the shore. Dress warmly. Plenty of parking on the Sand Beach lot at night. Remember not to use headlights or flashlights while stargazing. The Stars on the Sand program started at 9:30 PM and lasted about an hour. Set your iPhone to a night setting to take photos without a flash. Sand Beach is also nice for a quick stop on the 1.5 mile Ocean Path walk. The sand beach is so beautiful nestled between the granite cliffs. Take a polar plunge if you enjoy a brisk 55 F swim. Too cold for this native Floridian. During the day, parking is quite limited. A park pass is required for entry. Parking is available along the road if the lot is full...or use the free Island Explorer bus. Take only photos, leave only footprints.

Yelp
I'm about to be a Maine curmudgeon. (Sorry/not sorry; I've just gone to nearly every beach in ME!) I have seen Sand Beach listed over and over again as one of "the best beaches in the entire state". I respectfully disagree. It's cool, don't get me wrong, but I think that's because it's located on a small inlet between granite mountains and rocky shores in Acadia National Park. If you took it out of the ANP and plopped it on any other part of the coastline it probably wouldn't get as much attention. When we came in mid-October there were hundreds and hundreds (and hundreds) of people on this 290 yard long beach. Yes, you read that right. Despite needing specially designated passes that allowed us to access certain parts of the park at certain times, it was overwhelmingly overcrowded. The wait for the bathrooms was a half hour. Glad to see people enjoying themselves, but as "locals" (Mainers, but not from Bar Harbor) I would never come out of my way to go here. Also it's frequently too windy here to enjoy a picnic, so keep that in mind as you're figuring out where to spread out your spread (and on that note: carry in, carry out please). All of that being said there IS a best bit to Sand Beach -- and that's the visibility of it from The Beehive! Absolutely stunning.

Yelp
Simple review: - hard to get parking - big waves - touristy and crowded, so come at a good time - outdoor showers (for feet) and usually a short line for it - good for the kids - good for body surfing - the hike is nice, not too hard

Yelp
Such a beautiful small place with so much to offer. Beautiful for family, self and romantic getaways. No liter in sight and everyone that comes into this place is super nice + polite. I almost never notice anyone being in a bad mood, for the most part everyone here is like minded in that way and it's what makes the area so beautiful. You never have to worry about negativity or anything bad coming into your space. I'm always here with my puppy and feel comfortable enough always to let him off leash even with other dogs around. I 100% recommend coming here for your next small beach day in the area. PS: I've met a couple of people that have mentioned renting cabins in the area so if you're in town but don't have a place to stay that May be a good option.

Yelp
I've quickly learned that beachfront in Maine simply means, "water touches your property". The access, composition, and way weather impacts the site seem...arbitrary. After visiting several New England beaches on trips in '95, '00, '03, and now '22, I can say Sand Beach has been the best Maine beach thus far. *I'm no Mainer, mind you, and community manager Steff D.'s reviews suggest there are better venues.* On a brief, summer vacation to the Schoodic Peninsula with side trip to Acadia National Park, however, the Sand Beach lived up to the promise. During the warmer months, you can expect 1) an overcrowded parking situation (take any spot on the side of the one way road leading up to the lot). On a sunny, warm day, 2) an overcrowded beach, and 3) a picturesque inlet with rocky cliffs, barefoot friendly beach/stairs/walkways, and lobster trap buoys in the distance. As many state, the saturation of visitors make any amenities (foot washing stations, changing booths, bathrooms, etc.) a challenge. A special caution to those enjoying tepid or even cold water swims; the North Atlantic shores never reach above 55º. Our family played and body surfed in the water for an hour, but most visitors prance around the frigid surf and then warm up on the sand. We often vacation in the upper peninsula of Michigan where Superior's body numbing temperatures are almost identical. If you're also used to that experience, then you can truly take advantage of all Sand Beach has to offer!

Yelp
Great Beach, Even Better Than Expected! This beach was really nice, the water wasn't as cold as I expected either, still not warm since this is Maine and not Thailand... I would say this is one of the best beaches on the east coast north of the Carolinas! My son had fun playing in the sand until he ran out of gas and needed a happy nappy.... They have a lifeguard on duty here. There are bathrooms at the parking lot and changing stalls. Water spouts to was sand off too by the changing stalls. Parking is a challenge, you may find a spot in the lot or you may park a mile away along the road.

Yelp
Being the only sandy beach in Acadia, this was definitely very family heavy and one of the more crowded areas of the park when we arrived. Alas it was foggy as all get out so the views were less than spectacular but it was still a solid experience and I'm glad we stopped by. To the right and left of the beach is the rocky coast which made for some beautiful photos in the fog. I also really enjoyed checking out the tide pools and seeing all the snails and barnacles exposed during low tide. Tons of people were out swimming but I dipped my toes into the water and NO THANKS. Way too cold for me! But if you're into a refreshing, just shy of polar experience, bring your suit and hop in. I could see if it were hotter out that day that the cold might actually be pretty refreshing, but in the cool, foggy afternoon it wasn't for me. Parking lot gets packed so plan to either take the shuttle or prepare to walk. We were driving the scenic loop so we had to park about a half mile out and walk over. Not a bad stroll but if you're carrying beach gear just plan ahead.

Yelp
Sand Beach is a beautiful and natural little pocket beach located in Acadia National Park. There is public parking for the beach but it's rather limited, there is also a smaller parking lot nearby but you may have to settle for parking along the road. In the couple times we visited the beach I found that people didn't tend to stay for too long so you may have some success circling the primary parking lot waiting for a sport to open up. On both my visits I circled three or four times and was then able to park my car. Changing rooms, restrooms and drinking fountains are located by the primary parking area before reaching the steps down to the beach. Sand Beach affords some breathtaking scenic views of the rocky shores and granite mountains surrounding the water. The sand is made up mostly of broken shells of mussels, sea urchins, barnacles and periwinkles which have been crushed by thousands of years of waves and changing tides. The water here is always pretty frigid with ocean temperatures rarely exceeding 55 degrees in the summer. According to the park's website there is a lifeguard on duty from Memorial Day through Labor Day but our visit was ten days after Labor Day and we didn't see a lifeguard so I'm not sure what's up with that. If you visit Acadia National Park, Sand Beach should be on your list of things to see. Have a little patience with the parking situation and you will be rewarded with some amazing scenic views.

Yelp
Beautiful trails start at Sand Beach. This is the perfect blend of beach and forest, and you can choose which to follow. You can also climb up to rocky cliffs and look out at the water. It's beautiful. It's also an easy hike for family members of all ages. P

Yelp
Sand Beach is def worth check out. If you have kids, they will love being along the water and dipping their feet in the water. Once you walk up the steps there is a fountain to clean you feet off on both sides of the building.
google avatar

Julie M.

Yelp
If you're visiting Acadia you have to check out Sand Beach! These other reviews are so well worded and I 1000% agree- just try to aim for off peak times to visit as the parking lot fills up quickly! It's so worth it!

Yelp
While sandy beaches are common throughout New England (especially Cape Cod, hence the traffic on its bridges), Acadia's Sand Beach is a geologically rare sandy pocket beach. Most of Acadia NP's beaches are wild, untamed, not for kicking back&relaxing. This is one of those relaxation beaches where you kick back on a towel, wade or swim in the water, throw a frisbee. It's like a taste of Cape Cod in the Pine State's wilderness (and the parking lot fills up in the summer, not so busy in the autumn) Sand Beach is also unique in that it has the Arctic current, hearkening back to the ill-fated searches for the Northwest Passage (like Henry Hudson, or the Franklin expedition) The water has a chill to it. It's cold for a reason. A pleasant way to get away from it all.

Yelp
There are so many trails to choose from. Add Sandy Beach to your short list if you don't live close to a beach or just love beaches. I thought it was terrific and beautiful! The contrast of rock, sand, forest, and mountain was a lot to take in. Also, behind the beach is a creek and it's a nice view of the mountain. Although I considered it cold, there were some families getting in the water and others kayaking. It would make a lovely stop for a picnic, reading a book, or throwing sand into the water (life with a toddler). Make sure you wear your sunscreen because there is no shade; it is just like a beach. Take off those bulky hiking shoes, strip off those wool socks and let your toes feel the sand (which looks like quinoa to me). Have fun!

Yelp
@@ road trip post @@ Cute beach in Acadia National Park. Notes: * Dogs are allowed around Acadia, but not on the beach. * Changing rooms and bathrooms by the parking area. * Parking area fills up fast, it's also the closest parking lot to the popular Beehive trail. If you can't find parking in the lot, there's parking on the road, but it will be one-way. * Even in cold May, people dip into the water (crazy!) or enjoy playing games like frisbee. * PSA: if you're playing frisbee either make sure you're in a more isolated part of the beach OR be good. Don't throw the frisbee in the air like you just don't care. (we almost got a frisbee in the face). * Anyway, despite the beach being decently crowded while we were there, it was really peaceful and beautiful. Recommended for a little break to relax.

Yelp
Beautiful beach with a moderately sized parking lot. Bathrooms and changing rooms right by parking lot. Went in September and wasn't overly crowded.
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty sand beach so far north. Surrounded by cliffs. Cold water. Nice surf. Cool foggy air even on a warm summer day. Parking lot fills up. Park on road. Bathrooms, changing rooms. Beehive Trail is across the street. Super fun quick hike with great views.

Yelp
I've been coming here every summer since I was a kid and still go every year. The beach is beautiful, the water is freezing, and there are trails that connect right to the beach. Tip: Get there early to ensure a good parking spot. Note: Dogs are allowed on the trails but not on the beach.

Yelp
What a great place to soak up the sun, dip your toes and enjoy the views of the oceans in contrast to mountains. Growing up on Cape Cod seeing the ocean feels like a typical day out, but this beach was breathtaking to me. There is something about mountains meeting the ocean that amazes me! The water was a bit cold for my liking but the warm sun on our faces as we sat on the beach was just right. Just be prepared for a parking nightmare if you come peak hours.

John L.

Yelp
Attempted to go to this beach today at approx 3pm. When I rolled up to the booth the attendant said $30 please, I said excuse me, how much? He said you can turn around over there, which I quickly did.
google avatar

Anthony R.

Yelp
A rare sand beach in this area. The beach and water are incredibly beautiful... almost tropical looking. The views from the beach are terrific. Obviously, the water is very cold but the beach itself is a great place to hang out on a warm day.
google avatar

Robert R.

Yelp
Great spot to take pictures especially with the ocean in the background along with the rocks that are located there. Breathtaking and very relaxing to share with your special person

Donalie G.

Yelp
Sand beach is located in Acadia National Park. Free parking is available. The beach is about 290 yards long. The sand is a unique blend of shell fragments. The temperature during the summer maintains around 55 degrees with approximately 1/2 cup of salt/gallon of water. There are rocky cliffs on either side of the beach. There are changing rooms and restrooms for comfort needs. Lines tend to be long as many folks take advantage of the beach. There are multiple steps to get to the beach from the changing rooms. The beach is deep enough for plenty of umbrellas. Shady spots are not available. The water is very chilly but feels good on a nice hot day when the sun is bright. Tour boats pass frequently.
google avatar

Travis L.

Yelp
If you don't know, Sand Beach is unique because its sand is made up of shell fragments as a result of the pounding surf. Also, due to, imo, the biodiversity granted by the close proximity of its beach and wetlands. We visited in the autumn and were still able to appreciate the vista and uncharacteristically, for the Northeast, soft sand beach. If you have a spare 20 minutes, mos def worth checking out.
google avatar

Green T.

Yelp
The view is absolutely amazing! The beach has a cool breeze and the water is beautiful. It's a great spot to tan and read a book. Plus, it's not too crowded during the weekday. Overall, love this place and it is definitely worth the trip.

Mary Ann N.

Yelp
Beautiful spot in the morning. It is very cool so wear a coat. Worth a view when there is no crowds.

Yelp
A rare "pocket beach" located in an Acadia National Park cove, Sand Beach is a popular stop for those visiting ANP. There are clean changing rooms and bathrooms, an expansive parking area, and a wide sand beach. During our visit in June, the water was a frigid 55 degrees. Way too cold for me to want to venture in past my knees. No dogs or smoking are permitted.

James S.

Yelp
This is a beautiful beach that makes you want to go swimming. I went to see the amazing views and was impressed. I was not planning to swim but after freezing my feet several times and getting out I could not resist. I stayed in the water for a few minutes and it was a great rush. If you go swimming be ready to get dry and warm up quickly when you get out. I also talked with someone flying a kite from the beach towards the lagoon. I plan to bring a kite, extra towels and return again soon.

Ty W.

Yelp
Small but great. Clean bathrooms. Water was ice cold but that didn't stop the kids from having fun!
