What It's Like to Stay at Sand Valley Golf Resort in Wisconsin

"A vast, nature-immersed golf destination in central Wisconsin that feels removed from the busy world, the property offers five distinct courses—including the very long, dune-driven Mammoth Dunes, the Old World links–inspired Sedge Valley, the historically influenced Lido (built from designs of a 1920s Long Island legend), and a fun 17-hole executive course called the Sandbox—plus a championship course that rigorously tests short-game and hazard play. Lodging ranges from hotel-style lodge rooms and executive suites (with big bathrooms, high ceilings, and course views) to cozy cabins, multi-bedroom cottages on Lake Leopold with waterside fire pits, and full residences and estate homes for large groups, ensuring options for every budget and party size. The culinary program is unexpectedly strong for a golf resort: four restaurants serve everything from Italian at an upscale gallery and smoky outdoor barbecue to a standout farm-to-table bistro with steaks and formidable cocktails, while each course features signature, low-cost, high-flavor halfway-house bites—$1 tacos at Craig’s Porch, diagonal-cut turkey sandwiches on the Lido, a giant sausage hero at Mammoth Dunes, meat pies and Italian beef with housemade giardiniera at Sedge Valley, and a food-and-drink truck on the Sandbox. On-property amenities extend beyond golf to grass and hard-court tennis, a fitness center and spa, lakes for swimming and fishing, hiking and biking trails, and seasonal offerings like snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and pond hockey. The operation emphasizes guest convenience and sustainability—shuttles and a bag-and-luggage concierge mean you rarely need a car, tee times and caddies/walking play are standard, pushcarts are available, and single-use plastic water bottles are minimized in favor of refillable and recyclable options. Easily reachable by regional airports (about two hours from Madison; three to four hours from nearby major cities), this is a multi-generational, destination-style golf retreat best booked in advance to get the most value and desired tee times." - Red Fabbri Red Fabbri Red Fabbri is a marketing exec and gear-obsessed dad who writes about everything from traveling with kids to setting up your kitchen with the right equipment to getting the most out of your luxury trips. Went on a work trip to Sand Valley and even though I’m not a golfer, I had a great time. I played my first-ever round on the Sandbox course and actually really enjoyed it. It’s super laid-back and the scenery around the course is beautiful. The nature overall was stunning. You’re surrounded by dunes, woods, and open skies the whole time. For non-golfers, there’s a solid mix of things to do. I tried out grass tennis and court tennis with a great instructor, but my favorite activity was fat tire biking. The trail near the golf course took me deep into the woods and it was both challenging and rewarding. The food across the resort was consistently good, but Aldo’s was hands down my favorite.

Despite being located in the middle of nowhere Wisconsin this golfers' paradise is an absolute must see & play destination for anyone remotely attached to the game of golf. Kid friendly, grandparent vacation and an adult playground there's enough to stay occupied here for at least a week. Once you're on property the prices for beers are $3 and food on the course can be either $1 or $3! Block out your calendar, book some tee times and go play some of the best golf courses I've ever seen!

Google
The customer service at SV is top tier. I was lucky enough to get to play all 4 current courses and the sandbox a couple weeks ago. Each course is worth playing and a very different experience. Food and drink is delicious yet incredibly affordable, considering the price for golf here... But that's kind of the point. Once you're there they really just take care of you. Was an experience that will happen again. If you're wanting to make the trip, schedule it... It's a golfers paradise. If you've got a couple good friends to take the trip with, you won't regret it forget it.

I’m not a golfer, but I had the chance to visit Sand Valley and play the short course—which was perfect for a beginner like me. The property is stunning, with beautiful views and a peaceful vibe that made the whole experience feel special. Even if you're not there for golf, the food alone is worth the trip—all restaurants had great service and delicious options. A great spot to relax, take in the scenery, and enjoy a bit of everything.

Google
Absolutely incredible experience! All five courses were pristine and perfectly maintained, while also challenging. Every course felt like a new adventure, and the scenery was just stunning. This was easily one of the most memorable golf experiences I’ve ever had. From the friendly staff to the beautiful layout, everything was top-tier… especially the food! Can’t wait to come back!

The grass tennis courts are phenomenal and so much fun to play on! Lunch is always great too. I used to work here and they started serving Buffalo cheese curds then and still serve them now which are so delicious! Central Wisconsin is a hidden gem!

I host an annual golf trip for 12 guys and have done places like Bandon, big cedar, St. George ut amongst others. Sand valley ranks highly on the list. The 4-bedroom houses on the lake were nothing short of spectacular. The in cottage bbq dinner we ordered was perfect after a long day. The courses were simply great, we played them all. Each one was unique and had its own character. The only slight complaint I have is the lack of community feeling while there. Not many places for people to gather at night. The resort is still young, I’m sure they will add a putting course, bars, and other amenities that will make it feel like you are all there together. I highly recommend taking a trip here, this is a bucket list for any avid golfer…it will not disappoint

Had a great visit at Sand Valley. The entire property is just gorgeous and staff is so friendly. The courses are beautiful. I also loved playing grass tennis. Delicious food and drink options, as well. Would love to come back again!

Yelp
I've been to Sand Valley twice before - just made my 3rd trip. Also been to Bandon Dunes once. All told, I've now played 5 different courses. The Sedge (46 days old when I played it) was quite nice but the least impressive of the 5 I've played. If I were a relative beginner, or elderly, it would be the easiest of all the courses to play. (par 68,... but A LOT of up-and-down). There was nothing about this course that was more impressive than the other 4 I've played. I had a good caddy but the 3 guys I played with didn't take caddies and sprayed the ball all over the place so my caddy ended up spending time helping them too. I hope they tipped him. And while most of the facilities and services were top notch, i did get a little attitude from employees a couple of times. I was disappointed that in the Main pro shop, they did not have a scorecard for the Sedge. Nobody told me there was no practice putting green at The Sedge. I guess I should have asked. I knew to hit balls before going to the course, but didn't putt. Fairways weren't as lush as I expected for a 46-day old course. It's rustic. Greens weren't cut very short so they played very slowly and it was difficult for me to adjust (I take responsibility for that). The three tees are nice - one of them is up in the beginning of the fairway, so (again) if I were a beginner or elderly, I'd like that option. I'll go back to the resort, but I probably won't play The Sedge again.

Yelp
Sand Valley..... There have been many reviews praising the amazing golf available on your courses the food too has been praised, and deservedly so. My 5 Stars are for the people.... the waitstaff, grounds crew, caddies, pro shop crew and those working behind the scenes. You put up with The Good, the bad and the Ugly...... Thanks for making Sand Valley such an outstanding experience.

Yelp
Truly an Oasis of Midwestern Charm. I just looked this up: with a current (inflated) Median Home Value of $249K in this county, it's crazy to imagine they built this mega 10x multi million dollar complex. Yes I mean Complex. The Golf courses are expansive, and truly continue to expand. The hotel I'm not sure has a rating, but would likely be THE ONLY 5 Star accommodation in all of the State of Wisconsin. Facts, look it up. The Food is great, and everything is clean, especially the rooms. You will not find anything like this for hundreds and hundreds of miles. Perhaps that's the charm. They also have homes (very few) that I understand sell for 1 to 2.5M... insane considering the values in this area. A must visit place when touring the Midwest.

Yelp
Good golf but the rest - lodging, restaurants, shops --is the worst kind of Pure Corporate Greed with absolutely no Customer Care I have experienced in a lifetime of worldwide travel. 1.Won't let you check out an hour late after forking over $3-4 k to come here. 2. Unknowledgeable staff. When we arrived about an hour before our tee time no one where to get water or lunch. This is amazing since there are restaurants at every course! 3. None of the golf shops sell Women's Golf shoes, but the staff on duty lied and said they did - starting at a Men's size10! It was comical. 4. Bus driver was annoyed because we couldn't give him an ADDRESS of the Main Lodge or check-in desk. This list could go on forever...this could be a great place but you have to put up with pure crap to play the golf. Recommend the real deal in Europe- it will cost you about the same!

Yelp
Where do I start? Shoutout to our caddies Christian and Chase, our waitresses Pricilla, Lisa, Liz, Maria, our starters at all three courses, Sand Valley, Mammoth Dunes and the Sandbox, Greg at the bag drop area, Mikayla and Amanda at the food truck, Taylor and Meagan on-course libation stop ladies, and others. Crazy how you spend 4 days at a resort and you remember all the names of the staff that took care of you! Our group of 7 from Los Angeles dropped in for 4-days for 54 holes of regulation golf (Sand Valley and Mammoth Dunes) and 17 holes of the Sandbox! It was an amazing boy's golf trip (over Mother's Day 2022 weekend - thanks Mom). This was probably my first big golf trip outside California. Never been on a "strictly golf" trip and Sand Valley did not disappoint. 5 stars most definitely. The place is a golf Mecca, in the middle of rural Wisconsin, in the middle of nowhere, Nekoosa. Not much outside the resort for an urban city dude like me but you just really need to stay at the resort since they have everything in the resort (there's a Dollar Store about 2-3 miles outside the resort if you need anything else). Other than that, booze, breakfast, lunch, dinner is available at the resort via their restaurant, the Aldo restaurant which has buffet breakfast, lunch and high end steaks (the Aldo is their high end restaurant). You got a food truck by the Sandbox which has some yummy Smash Burgers and other east foods, go up to the tee box at Sand Valley and get some amazingly pork tacos ($1.50). If you're a beer drinker, beers are cheap, woooohooo, $3-4 a can. Check out their Transfusion drink, make it a double for like $12, amazing. My buddies and I had double Transfusions throughout our rounds and we were pretty lit afterwards! Their Wisconsin style mashed Old Fashions are delicious, and don't forget their Greg Norman Cab for $48 a bottle. NOTE: Wisconsin law prohibits any corking of wine. Don't need to bring your bottle to the restaurants, they won't let you pop the cork. If you want quick and easy pick up foods, the have wraps and breakfast Sammie's around for $6 a piece. Thanks to Lisa for the homemade cheesecake! The golf courses were nice. Staying true to real golf, Sand Valley does not have golf carts available unless you're disabled or handicap. They have caddies for hire ($100 plus what whatever else you want to give to your caddie) per round. They also have pull carts. I loved Sand Valley. The fairways were tighter than Mammoth Dunes. The greens on Sand Valley were also smaller. Both regulation 18 courses are pretty wide though (not a lot of lost balls). However you'll need to get use to the sandy fairways (I personally think it's harder to hit off of this type of fairways). Mammoth Dunes has wider fairways than Sand and also big greens! Both offer fun rounds! The Sandbox is a 17-hole par 3 course which is super fun and quit challenging. The starter let our group of 7 out together so we got a 7-some in! Some of the holes have challenge greens and tons of sand. I hear they are building more courses so expect to see a few more Sand Valley courses in the future! This is probably my longest review I have ever left on Yelp, also took me a week to finish. Overall a great trip. The resort is about 75 miles from Madison and an easy 1.15 - 1.30 minute drive from Madison Airport. The area doesn't have a lot of 5G reception but the facilities and rooms had strong wifi. My BFF and I stayed in a nice double King bed room overlooking the Sandbox 17th hole. The cable tv is awesome, they provide free drinking bottle waters everywhere on the resort, so there is no need to bring or buy extra water. There are tons of free parking. They have 2 FREE Tesla chargers if you drive your Tesla onto the resort. The bathrooms are nice, they provide liquid soap, shampoo, the works. A great time, and a bit less expensive than their older brother courses at Bandon Dunes! Kudos to your team at Sand Valley!

Yelp
Fantastic golf venue. You are in the middle of Wisconsin but it feels like another world! This is the Mecca of golf.

Yelp
My family and I spent three nights at Sand Valley to attend the James Beard Chef Invitational. The residence that we stayed in was large and quite impressive. I loved that we had four rooms, each with their own king bed and bathroom. This made the experience more enjoyable for our family. The kids really appreciated the snacks provided. The residence was very clean and well maintained. A highlight of our trip was when my husband and son went ice fishing. Ray taught them how and was very attentive to their needs. He was patient and proactive in helping to provide them with a good time. Ray was very personable and went above and beyond throughout any interaction with our family. The chef invitational was a lot of fun for my husband and myself. We enjoyed trying new foods and the entire experience of meeting the chefs and discovering new kitchen techniques. A few shout outs to the staff members that made our experience top notch, Kate was very personable and patient with my many questions before arrival. She greeted us every time we entered through the front desk door with a smile on her face. We received great customer service from Roxanne. She was very pleasant and friendly while working hard. Josh the bartender was excellent, very friendly and helpful. Alex was so kind and such a help to my husband. All in all Sand Valley was a great experience. We can't wait to stay again!

Yelp
This golf course is so beautiful. From the sand dunes and the highly kept up greens. If you're a golfer in Wisconsin you must play one of the 4 courses here (Mammoth Dunes, Sand Valley, Sandbox, or Lido.) The food is pretty cheap considering the place. I didn't stay in the various hotel areas but they look very nice from the outside. The only thing I will say is that it gets pretty full of bugs but you just have to ignore that. Otherwise great resort.

Yelp
Very disappointed by my entire experience here. The caddies were terrible - they were calling out approximate yardages without a care and their reads on the green would be equally careless. The 3 courses here (Sand Valley, Mammoth Dunes, and Lido) all feel the same and they lack character. I definitely wont be coming back, there are too many better options for golf in the area (Erin Hills, The Club at Lac La Belle, Whistling Straits, etc.).

Yelp
The views here are amazing!! We dined outside at Mammoth restaurant there. Everything was delicious. We ordered their cheese curds and wings as an appetizer, both were so tasty & the sauces were great. I had the mammoth chicken sandwich for dinner which was a large portion size and so flavorful. Our service was okay, it was a little busy so understandable that it was slower. They also started a fire in their fire pit which added a nice touch to sitting outside as the sun set. We will be back to check out Craig's porch - however, we found it confusing all weekend trying to figure out when it is available to the public. Spoke to multiple staff members throughout the weekend and each time they had different answers on when the public could go up there for drinks.

Yelp
Beautiful, immaculate golf course and lodging! Sand Valley came highly recommended by trusted golf-pro friends, who frequent SV often when escaping the city (Chi) life on their WI ranch. My golf coach in CA, too, highly recommended playing this course. The WI King suite was spacious, relaxing, and clean! L'Occitane products are stocked throughout the space. We arrived with our 5-month-old late evening on check-in day, and the crib we requested was ready for us. Dining: 3 restaurants Mammoth- Garden salad with chicken: 4 (great greens and acceptable chicken) Chicken Club sandwich: 4.5 (Very good!) Pastrami reuben- 4.5 (Yum!) Aldo's- Breakfast buffet- 3 (typical breakfast foods and pastries along with cappuccinos) Baby potatoes- 3.5 (average) Vegetable medley- 4 Chopped Salad- 4 (Bountiful and filling salad) Ribeye- 4.5 (very good, including the sides) Filet mignon- 3 (overcooked steak, but the rest was good) Craig's Porch- (reserved for those that golf) Usual snack and lunch foods that are usually available on most (public) golf courses. GOLF AMAZING. Expensive, yes. $200/game, and $100+tip for a caddie. They do not permit golf carts on this course (PGA-hopeful), so you must walk the 18 holes. Steven served as our caddie (both my husband and I) on separate days and was terrific. He caddies 2-3 games/day, and can handle it just fine (great shape). He was extremely helpful and useful on the course. I recommend going with a caddie. It is a walking course (no carts). Aspiring US-Open course. We (all) thoroughly enjoyed spending a few nights here! ***Not much to do with babies/kids, but a great place to stop when traveling for a nice round of golf!

Yelp
Another stellar Mike Kaiser golf retreat destination. The golf courses have some very uniquely designed holes while being forgiving. The greens were hard and rolled true. The scenery is not the greatest but still interesting and enjoyable. My favorite part - the turn stands and the hydration stations!!!!! The turn stands had beers for $3, awesome tacos for $1! The hydration stations had Powerade, water, and candy bars for free!

Yelp
My buddies and I just visited for our first golf trip to Sand Valley. 36/day, 3-days, Sand Valley in the morning, lunch, Mammoth Dunes in the afternoon. What an incredible experience for anyone who loves the game of golf. Every single shot challenges you, tough but fair, course design is my favorite I've played, so challenging but you respect the way the course design pushes you to play each hole. Such a tough course, so although my scores ranged from 83 to 96, I did hit my first Hole in One on Sand Valley Hole 8. What an experience, they give you a framed picture of the hole you hit it on. They thought of everything. Lodging, food, & staff were all incredible. The best hospitality! Given the times we're in with heightened COVID safety protocol, the staff took every measure possible to create a safe experience for the guests.

Wonderful place!!! Great service great food and beautiful property!! Growing fast!! If you love to golf or just need to get away make it a must to see!

Yelp
Yes I'm a fan of this course even though it beat the crap out of me! There are two courses here one 18 hole and one par 3 17 hole, not a typo it's 17 holes of the hardest par 3 course you'll ever play in you're life guaranteed. The greens are HUGE and roll like putting on concrete. Now I know how the pros feel and what they have to deal with. The longest hole is 150 and a few are in the 100 yard range. Long putts here are the norm on both courses. The fairways on the 18 hole course are so wide it's nearly impossible to miss a fairway. Placement here is a must espically around the green where some of the bunkers are Scotland deep! Caddies are available. There are no carts, its walking only and it gets hilly so be prepared. Oh, and its expensive too. Great driving range is a short bus ride away. The 19th hole is very nice with a nice selection of beers and a variety of apps and lunch/dinner items. Outdoor seating as well. Service is excellent.

Yelp
Sand Valley is absolutely gorgeous and a MUST SEE if you are in the Nekoosa/Wisconsin Rapids area. They have a nicer restaurant (Aldo's - priciest), a more *upscale* bar (Mammoth Bar), and then Craig's porch, which is the cheapest but unfortunately is only open to golfers right now Everything Sand Valley does is surrounded by sustainability. They have their own garden where a lot of the vegetables/herbs grow, which is amazing! They try and also source local ingredients as much as possible. Besides sustainability (which truly is one of my favorite things about them) is that their food is DELICIOUS. No matter what you get, I promise you won't be disappointed. Their specialty drinks are pretty awesome too Not looking to eat? Just go for the views! Sit down, have a drink (or soda/water) and just relax and take in the breathtaking views. Sometimes when I'm there, I truly forget I'm in Wisconsin. Plus, Mark Wahlburg and Aaron Rodgers have been spotted golfing there, so who knows who you might run into!

Kristan C.

Yelp
Phenominal! The resort grounds and surrounding areas are beautiful with so much attention to conservation and returning the area back to what God gave us. Restaurants are delicious and there is nothing on the menu that isn't fantastic! Cheese curds are served with a scattering of pickled carrots and celery and are to die for! The BBQ restaurant on property is yummy and provides great atmosphere as it's located on the Sandbox. Craigsporch--pork and chicken tacos for $1.00 that taste like $10.00! Homemade protein balls that make an excellent snack. Views ain't bad, either:)

Yelp
Sand Valley is an amazing golf resort. The two current 18 hole courses (Mammoth Dunes and Sand Valley) are very different, but fun and challenging. The facility is new and people are fantastic and helpful. Sure, they need more food options, but the one they have is very good with very good food, excellent wine selection, and good service. I also think they need a spa to complete the experience. The other reviews that gave two stars because of a caddy issue or three stars because not enough food options are ridiculous. Those are minor issues. If you are a golfer, this is a great resort that will be fun and challenging. You will enjoy it and want to go back. They are adding a third 18 hole Doak course in a couple years that should be great.

Yelp
Incredible resort, food, and scenery. This Eco-resort is perfect for city dwellers needing a break or families wanting to get away. Best dining experience with kids. Bonfire and smores made it a real treat. Food is excellent.

Yelp
Amazing golf resort. Perfect for buddies trip. Great service, and the rooms are very nice. Make sure you eat at Craig's Porch. GET THE PORK TACOS. YW

Yelp
Great golf course obviously. Wish the had better local rates to golf there more often. Staff has always been friendly.

Yelp
I'm here to golf. They have a lot of sand and I will be in that sand a lot while I play. BUT let's get down to business right. I am a nacho connoisseur and these nachos are about average. The flavors are a tasty but not tasty enough. I would not get the nachos again, although I drink a lil bit so I might.

Yelp
Well worth the trip. Bandon Midwest, minus the water. Highly recommend you make this trip out to central WI for a golfing adventure.

Yelp
Absolutely stunning golf course! Views are just incredible. Fairways are incredibly wide and almost impossible to miss. The greens are equally large, you can hit a GIR and be 100 feet from the pin. The fairways are firm and every lie is a tight lie. That takes some getting used to for me. The greens are very firm and fast (I did not make a single divot all day). You cannot fire at the pins, the ball simply does not stop. I am an 8 handicap and play a Pro V ball and could not stop the ball with a wedge in my hand. That is my only complaint, I like to go at the flag and spin the ball so that took some getting used to. But it was a great experience and I look forward to playing again.

Scott W.

Yelp
The golf courses and resort are very nice. This is the 2nd time that I've been there. Rooms are very nice and convenient. Food options are a bit limited. The most disappointing thing that I experienced on both trips are the caddies. They expect to be tipped $120 per player but they aren't willing to provide the type of service a golfer should get for this kind of fee. If I go back I likely won't get a caddie.

Tim H.

Yelp
Exceptional staff that is very welcoming and helpful. It's a destination golf resort that competes with Mike Keiser's other resorts - Bandon Dunes, Cabot - but is easier to get to from the Midwest. Courses are better for match play than stroke play because they are not as challenging as they could be but get caddies because your strategy is not always obvious from the tee box. Food and accommodations are solid with many options in both categories. As stated earlier though, if you value great customer service this is your place. The caddies, starters, food service, transportation, and front desk staff were top drawer. If you like Bandon, Streamsong, Arcadia, etc. put this one on your list.

George F.

Yelp
Golf course was great but don't expect a caddie is guaranteed such as at Erin or Kohler. The staff finally came through with caddies but it took a lot of convincing for them to find them. The caddie master was a matter of fact that we weren't getting caddies although we made arrangements months ago. If I go back I'll be very nervous that they will not have caddies. When we forced them to find the caddies, the caddies were great.
