Moffat County, Colorado, Has Wild Horses and Canyons With Dinosaur Tracks — How to Visit

"Sand Wash Basin, about 158,000 acres of sagebrush-clad hills, dry creek beds, and clay buttes, is overseen by the Bureau of Land Management and is a refuge for wild horses — 344 grays, bays, and sorrels — which attract camera-toting pilgrims ardent for the open range." - Travel + Leisure Editors

We visited in June 2024. Entered at Maybell, and did not know the area, driving an all wheel drive SUV. Weather was dry and sunny. Beautiful small cactus flowers and horses. Our tour took four hours, as we did not have a county road map. We would definitely visit again, with a good detailed road map. The roads were challenging.

Beautiful horse management area, but we didn't see any wild horses this time. We did drive the Wild Horse Loop and enjoyed the quiet beauty and informative placards along the drive.

Amazing! Make sure to take your Garmin. We got lost at one point but made it back because we had our Garmin. You won't have cell service so keep this suggestion in mind. Beautiful landscapes, saw many wild horses, up close and personal and No! Don't feed them! They need to stay wild! Definitely go with 4x4. Also be aware that some of the roads can and do flood so be mindful of the weather. Great experience!

Fantastic experience!!!! We stopped when we saw one horse waaaaay out in the distance but then some nice ladies stopped by our car and told us to follow the map around the loop on 48 and check by two bar, which is near where these herds were. Such beauties... we went just before sunset and left after seeing three big herds. Cautioned about the windy and dark roads at night. Careful with the ditches and rocks, quite a bumpy ride even for my jeep in 4WD.

Beautiful High Colorado Desert - lots of wild horses, deer, elk, coyotes and sage grouse. Bring lots of water and a 4 wheel drive car in any precipitation.

Sandwash Basin is a wild horse lovers oasis. Heavenly relaxing place, most of the time.
