This is the best place in Juneau for fish and chips, and to get to know some rowdy locals

When we arrived in Juneau we checked in with a local and this was the place she recommended! My husband had the Halibut Fish & Chips (medium) and I ordered the Halibut Fish tacos. They were both incredible! We actually ended up going three days in a row because the halibut was the best we had ever had. I also really enjoyed the fried zucchini. The second day I subbed the zucchini for the fries and really enjoyed it more than the fries. The staff was friendly and we got to meet some locals and have a lot of good conversations while we visited. I would highly recommend this place for anyone visiting Juneau. It was hands down the best food we ate during our visit.

Traveling to Alaska on a cruise, we rented a car in Juneau and were recommended to dine at Sandbar. It's not a luxurious restaurant, but the Fish and Chips were incredibly delicious 😋 and the service was excellent. During our meal, regular customers were chatting with the owner and also engaged in conversation with us. One of the regulars even gave us a piece of locally famous smoked salmon before leaving, which was a delightful surprise. Even now, back in Vancouver, we still miss the delicious food and the warm hospitality of the locals. If we ever have the chance to return to Juneau, we will definitely visit Sandbar again and hope to see that kind regular customer once more.

Google
Very tasty food. Particularly enjoyed the fish and chips. The halibut fish was delightful and the chowder was very good as well. Only non-positive experience was the wait. They only had 2-3 people (including the bartender) working during the lunch rush and we waited nearly 35min+ for our food.

Google
The food was amazing, ranch wasn't my favorite but whatever. The staff didn't really pay attention when we asked to find more water so we had to ask again. But quiet environment in front and great food

Michael Cieslak

Google
I like fish and chips almost as much as I like tacos. The Sandbar has some of the best fish and chips I have had. I got the medium size and I was full, but we loved them so much, we got an extra order to split between us. They were so good, I forgot to take a picture of my basket before I finished! If you love halibut and are looking for a place off the beat and path, go here!

Google
Used to be good but has gone down hill last few times ordered. And I liked the food. Alot actually And last few times ordered just gotten worse and worse. But ordering over $60 dollars to have over-cooked/burnt fries. For not one but all 3 orders. Was last straw for me. Will no longer be ordering.

Google
I can only say THE BEST FISH & CHIPS ever!!! By far their halibut fish &chips beat the best ones I had before! We tried the grilled halibut sandwich was like nothing we had before! So good! The staff especially Marvel was soooo nice and fun! We had the best time there. Extremely recommend it! Do not miss out! Thank you!!!!

Google
Really nice local place, not fancy, but awesome fish & chips! Big delicious, meaty halibut pieces in light batter. Good, prompt service. No need to eat down town, this place is great!

Gina L.

Yelp
Absolutely the best fish and chips in the area! Joe is the best and I highly recommend stopping in!!

D Y.

Yelp
the fried fish is the best ive ever had - unmatched. Also the owner Gail is so friendly, kind and personable. recommended us the triangle club and took the time to talk and engage with our party. we had a wonderful time. let it be known that i rarely write reviews at all unless the experience was exceptional

Denise K.

Yelp
The halibut fish and chips is off the hook. Food is hot and beer is cold! A local feel to this place

Marnie L.

Yelp
Awesome fish and chips. They come in 3,5 and 8 pieces. They were done perfectly and very tasty. Clam chowder was New England style. It had chunks of potatoes and was creamy and excellent. It is a must try when visiting Juneau.

George L.

Yelp
This last visit was not so great. The service was non existent although the business only had about four tables. The waffle fries were overcooked and they were stuck together so they did not cook between.

Philip L.

Yelp
Laid back, friendly place for great fish and chips. We were introduced to this local favorite by our wonderful photographer tour guide. Good value, good portions, unpretentious, easy to get in and out without tourist traffic.

Scott A.

Yelp
Best halibut. Great fast service. My sons and I were visiting from Southern California and we were definitely looking for a spot where locals go, not tourist hoards!

Tam S.

Yelp
We went in for lunch at the recommendation of a local friend. The bartender sent us to the other side of the restaurant as she had 5 people at the bar. We did share with that we were planning on having drinks with lunch with that waitress so she took us back to the bar and seated us. That must have put the qbartender in an even worse mood. She put our menus in the end of the table, told us what they were out of- which included the chowder- and then proceeded to take our drink order. I went to see what alcohol they had as I wasn't going to ask any questions that might put her in a worse mood. When I got back to the table and asked for a drambuie I was told I had already been asked and they didn't have drambuie. I showed her the bottle at the bar. She forgot it. A table of 4 came in so she came and told us to give her our menus. We did ask about placing our orders and that annoyed her. We opted to pay for our drinks and leave. We heard her tell the waitress that she was very busy so maybe it was her first night. If that is the case, then perhaps the owners will see this and be able to offer some additional support.

Yelp
If you don't like dive bars and terrible karaoke, sit in the cafe side and check the schedule. The halibut and chips are unbeatable in Juneau. The patrons are a hoot if you like (quieter) people watching, complete with women sporting mullets since the 80s and a guy with a live cockatoo on his shoulder. The drinkers here seem more tame than some of the Downtown places and less snobby than the hipster bars and tasting rooms overrun with toddlers.

Carren R.

Yelp
Perfect dive bar with amazing fish! We asked our driver where to go and he took us here. Really the best fish and chips I have ever had. It's a dark kind of divey bar but don't let that stop you amazing fish.

Tim R.

Yelp
We had to wait over an hour for the "best halibut fish and chips in juneau," and while it was quite good, the fries were awful. It's a classic dive bar vibe, and so the wait was tolerable, and it was during celebration, but over an hour for not cheap fish and chips is a bit much.

Darrell H.

Yelp
Sandbar and grill needs a makeover like Louis's bar got a few years back to earn 5 stars from me. As far as I can tell the place is being held together by the charming lady bar tenders. If you have a strong stomach then get you some fish n chips from the back. They do karaoke and there's some billiard games and they attract a nice drama free crowd. (Knock on wood)

Chris E.

Yelp
Townie bar, dive, bar, darts, beers, pulltabs, and locals!! This great bar is a place where you get your drink first and then you can order something to eat ! A great place to have a few beers! A great place to meet some local Alaskans and throw some darts. Everybody is very welcoming, but you will hear about the small town gossip, in a good way. I must is there a fish and chips , if you like fish and chips, get a large! The medium is a good size of the person in the quality will leave you wishing you got a large!!!! so take my advice and go big. The fish and chips are made with fresh Alaskan halibut! They clearly have homemade batter because it is very good and taste very fresh! Also, the tartar sauce is made in house. Everything here from the bartender service to the food is great and you must buy some pulltabs because half of it supports local nonprofits.

Adeline V.

Yelp
Halibut fish fry, this is the place in Juneau to go for fried halibut. You can also get salmon fish fry here. It's expensive but if you are looking for a fish and chips situation, this is the place to go. I wouldn't eat in, to be honest, unless it was convenient for you, the take out option is just as good, and you can call your order in ahead.

Paul S.

Yelp
Hands down - Best halibut fish and chips in Juneau. Staff in great. Local spot close to Mendenhall glacier too.

Ana S.

Yelp
Best halibut I ever had. We were in Juneau only for 2 days and we visited this place twice because we all LOVED the food (not to mention we got a Halibut sandwich togo as well! for our dinner when we're back in Washington tonight!!)

Lisa V.

Yelp
Great hole-in-the-wall, local bar. Recommended by a local, this place did not disappoint. Whenever we travel, we try fish & chips. The halibut fish & chips at Sand Bar are probably the best or second-best we've ever tried (Rakam's in Grand Cayman is our favorite). The food was hot and fresh. The staff was warm and inviting. The folks at the bar struck up conversations. We hope to be back one day!

Monica S.

Yelp
Great halibut fish & chips. Been going there for the last 20 years. Always recommend to friends.

Tom E.

Yelp
Surprisingly good fish and chips, for a bare-bones decor kinda place. The fish was fresh, tender, delicious, and the batter was crispy and light. The fries were average. Staff were very attentive checking in on us frequently. The sticks of mismatched furniture left a little to be desired, but the overall experience was still good for a good price.

Kyle R.

Yelp
Steph is the best and keeps the glasses full with her amazing personality. The halibut is amazing highly recommend

Kristee L.

Yelp
Awesome dive bar food. Local hangout. It's a dive bar so you know what to expect. Service is best to be expected with one person cooking and one bartender.

Chong L.

Yelp
Tried this place out based on reviews and locals said it had good fish n chips. I got the big boy fish n chips. Reap good. Tasty AF. Halibut. Tried the chowder, excellent. Semi thick, large chunks of potatoes and nice bits of clams and bacon. Tasty AF. Place is a dive. Outer building is a pos. Not sure how they don't have rain coming in. For food go to back side with staircase, there's the door. Front side is full bar and pool tables, etc. No food there. Prices a bit high, but so is everything in Alaska, especially now.

Trent V.

Yelp
Great fish and chips, amazing dive bar. If you're into a small town feel without a touristy feel this is the place

Dennis S.

Yelp
This is a old smelly bar, if you want to drink it is great, local folks, Deep fried halibut is only redeemable item on the menu. Needs to be remodeled and above all else just clean.

Mark S.

Yelp
I don't make a trip to Juneau without visiting the Sand Bar. Hands down the best halibut around. If you're hungry, order a small. If you're not quite as hungry, order a large to share. It's cheaper that way, and it is a whole lotta fish.

Matt C.

Yelp
Is it possible to give a negative rating? If so they certainly earned it. Complete jerk runs the counter. We walked in with 9 people. Get up to the counter to order and he won't take our order...claiming that if you have groups of 8 you have to have a reservation. So he literally won't take our order. And was a jerk at the same time. And the place was empty! What a prick. And that doesn't even begin to describe how gross the place is. Think of a truck stop bathroom...that serves halibut. That's what this place looks and smells like. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere that has good service and good food. This place is a must-miss!

KimBee A.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, offers darts, full bar, pool, and standard bar food. Great fish and chips!

Donna B.

Yelp
This place was recommended by two different locals as having the best halibut fish and chips in Juneau. Hands down it was the best we had in Juneau and we had some great fish and chips there. This place is kind of a dive bar but we loved the food and the atmosphere! They made a great skinny margarita also!

Daniel H.

Yelp
A place that locals like to go for good food, they're known for the great halibut, but they also have very good sandwiches and burgers, all reasonably priced the food is so good I did not downgrade the stars for what a dump. This place is, if you can get past that it's clean the staff is friendly and the food is worth it.

Brad M.

Yelp
Best fish n chips in Juneau. A short drive from downtown but way better and portion is way better! If you're starving get the big one!! Friendly and helpful!!

Lisa W.

Yelp
Whenever family or friends come for a visit to Juneau, I always take them here. It checks a lot of boxes. Great food... do yourself a favor and get the halibut fish and chips. Alaskan beer and plenty of other beers. And it qualifies as a true Alaskan experience.

Lon G.

Yelp
Best Halibut and chips in town! Regular working man's bar. Love the shuffleboard!Fish and Chips

Vern H.

Yelp
This is a homey and friendly bar in the historic Nye Beach neighborhood of Newport. Dog friendly with fair prices.

Tim K.

Yelp
A friend who is a Juneau local took us here back in May when we had a stop on our cruise. The place might just be most divey restaurant I've ever eaten at. Don't let that deter you though! They serve the most kick ass halibut fish and chips ever!!! My only regret... Not getting the larger portion!

Jin C.

Yelp
Half restaurant and half bar. I really didn't think much of this place at first glimpse but I was basically floored by how good the food was here. I sampled their halibut tacos, chicken wings and fried mushrooms. I guess you could say their speciality is anything fried. And wow, do they do a good job. Everything is seasoned really well. The halibut chunks in particular were super moist and tender. The corn tortillas are fried which elevate their texture to another level. The coleslaw acts as a nice counterpoint to the greasy mess in your hands. I can totally see myself frequenting the Sandbar if I ever lived here. Really local vibe and the drinks are great too.

Justin D.

Yelp
Trust me, don't ever come here for their quesadillas, you'll regret it. But if you're coming for their fish and chips, it's the best I've ever had. I didn't even care for Halibut until today, but Sand Bar Grill definitely changed my mind. A true hidden gem.

Heather S.

Yelp
This is my favorite fish and chips place in Juneau. Yes, it's basic, but head over to the bar and enjoy! Perfect if you want to eat out after a day in the Alaskan outdoors

Brennan P.

Yelp
I showed up exhausted after a long ferry ride, half starved with hunger. I expected basic pub food, but the fish and chips, featuring fresh caught halibut, was the best Alaska has had to offer in the time I've lived here. I shall never forget the sandbar, and the most delicious halibut I've ever tasted! Don't miss it!

Brian O.

Yelp
After a day of sightseeing around Juneau, we decided to eat at the Sand Bar and Grill. We were ready to eat some halibut and chips, so this was the place to go to order some. We were not disappointed in our choice. Very good fish and tartar sauce. Very quick service.

Stephen L.

Yelp
I gotta say - best halibut I've ever had. So fresh and succulent ! The vibe was amazing ! Marvel - the bartender - was amazing. He helped us on all levels - the food came out fresh and amazing and the shots were good pours. Pool tables ! Dart boards and more !

Don R.

Yelp
If you want to avoid the cruise crowd, feel local and get some quality food with good service, this is your place. The staff was busy but still friendly and helpful (and efficient). I got fish and chips to take out. The fish was crisp, tasty and plentiful with a perfectly thin battering that didn't overwhelm the meat. My only critique was I prefer my fries more crispy, they were a tad underdone to me. To each their own in that regard. I got it to go and enjoyed at the Lena Cove picnic area a couple of miles north. Great fish and a beautiful waterfront view. Loved the peace and the lunch. And, a good local IPA to seal the deal.

Armin B.

Yelp
Anything Halibut was the best I've ever had. The meat was super tender and breading was just enough. Loved the fact that they didn't put too much breading on and it wasn't oily at all. The local beer selection was good too. Best of all, the owners were very nice and hospitable. Recommend them 100%.

Kirsten T.

Yelp
Definitely a dive. Supposed to be the beat halibut and chips in town. It was ok but the last piece was a bit underdone and unpleasant. Maybe it was in off night.

Liz B.

Yelp
Stopped in to try the world famous fish and chips and wasnt disappointed!! The batter was exactly how it should be, crispy and flavorful. The halibut chunks inside were moist and not overcooked. Our bartender was so awesome!! She apparently works every Sunday but we got lucky and she was working that Thursday when we dropped in. My dinner partner asked about a black velveteen (stout and hard cider mixed). She hadn't heard of it before so my friend just ordered cider. She brought us our drinks and then came back a few minutes later with the drink my friend was asking about. Totally didn't even charge us!! And the drink was on point. She was super friendly and we chatted for a bit. Wish I would of remembered her name. The atmosphere here is definitely corner bar but the food and the people make this place first class!! Oh and the onion rings and fried mushrooms were a real treat too!!

Rachel C.

Yelp
Sand Bar was recommended as a local favorite for halibut fish and chips, and the food definitely did not disappoint! The ambiance is definitely a little divey, with the usual 3-4 men drinking solo at the bar, a pool table, and country music or a terrible sitcom on the TV. The bartenders are not terribly attentive or friendly - I saw a couple sit down, wait for over 30 minutes, and eventually leave when they were never even asked for a drink order. Don't ask to customize your food order, because your requests will likely be forgotten. All that said, the fish and chips is AMAZING, and has set a new bar for fried fish for me. My sister ordered the grilled halibut sandwich which she said was excellent. Their fries are also on point. At ~$20 per person, the prices are comparable with other seafood-serving spots in town, but for top-notch food. I would only come to Sand Bar if I was really craving the best fried fish, but otherwise the atmosphere and service left a lot to be desired. 5/5 for food, 1/5 for ambiance and service.

Jen F.

Yelp
Yummy halibut with chips or on tacos. Huge selection of adult beverages. Nice as heck staff AND mad skills in the kitchen!! EAT HERE! No regrets. Delicious!

claira a.

Yelp
We were visiting for the Ironman and came by the day of for a late lunch. I got the small halibut fish and chips and it was so good. I ate all of it because it was a perfect sized meal. The place doesn't look like much but they've got some great food inside!

Mikel T.

Yelp
Service was great. Best Fish and Chips I have ever had. Billy was awesome treated me like we were old friends even though this was my first time here.

Joe T.

Yelp
I had forgotten how good the fish and chips are. Delish. Exceptional tarter sauce.Fish and Chips

Rachael M.

Yelp
The fish and chips were amazing! A true local dive bar. A few local beers on tap from Alaskan Brewing.
