The Best Things to Do in Albuquerque, the Hot Air Balloon Capital of the U.S.

"If you can’t enjoy the landscape from the basket of a balloon, take in picturesque vantage from the Sandia Peak Tramway’s 15-minute ascent from the foothills to the 10,378-foot mountain crest."

"Swiss engineering, above Albuquerque The Sandía Mountains rise to over 10,000 feet behind Albuquerque. From the top, the view over New Mexico is unparalleled: on a clear day, your eyes can take in eleven thousand square miles--almost one-tenth of the state! The quickest way up is the fifteen-minute 'flight' on the Sandia Peak Tramway, ascending from high desert to alpine evergreen forest. Swiss-designed, this aerial tramway has one of the longest spans in the world. Hiking, winter skiing and mountain biking are all available at the top, as well as a restaurant--a steakhouse two miles above sea level. (Prices are what you'd imagine at this altitude.) In case you're wondering why this mountain range is called "Sandía," which means 'watermelon' in Spanish--at sunset, the mineral content of the granite crags glows pinkish-red; along with the green of the conifers, the profile is reminiscent of a cut watermelon..."

Amazing experience on such a large tramway that was long. Had beautiful views of the mountains, all of Albuquerque, and land beyond. It was an exceptional experience that is more of a once in a lifetime opportunity. It’s North America’s longest and only takes about 15 min to go up. Saw lots of fossils on a nearby trail and the views at the top are phenomenal. You can see both valleys at the top and the ski lifts on the opposite side of the tram.

Google
It is an absolutely fantastic place with very picturesque views. The ride itself was only 15 minutes, but their trails are amazing. All the staff was very welcoming and polite, too! This park is huge with numerous trail options. It is worth visiting it for anyone. I regret coming here later in the afternoon and only spending about 4 hours due to the park getting dark. As many folks noted in the reviews, the views are spectacular! My recommendations to all visitors: 1. Please make sure to bring warm jackets and great hiking boots. It gets cold and icy in some areas and the winds are strong and cold. 2. Ensure to purchase tickets online in advance.

This is very fun to do. We went during sunset time and was beautiful. I will say wen u do go to the tram and go up. Its a big temperature change. I got there and was about 85 degrees and the moment I went up the tram it was was 55 degrees. It was cold up there. But got to see a beautiful view of New Mexico. I would recommend coming here.

Fantastic. The young man on the tram provided information on the way up. The views are beyond amazing. Breathtaking. Be prepared for all weather elements. In June, we had winter coats on. The decent was delayed due to inclement weather.

Google
I took the tram on a Monday evening; it was really easy to park, check in, and ride up and down. The trip is about 15 minutes each, and there’s additional hiking and a fine dining restaurant at Sandia Peak. The views were beautiful, and the staff are knowledgeable and organized. Highly recommend!

Google
We visited this park in early May. This was such a fun experience. We purchased tickets online the day before. We arrived and waited just a short time to board the tram, which went to the top of the mountain. There is a fine dining restaurant called TEN3 at the top if you are inclined to dine there, which you need reservations for. We took a short hike through the forest where we saw some awesome views down into the valley. There are many trails if you want to do more exploring deeper into the mountain. We then boarded the tram to return down the mountain. The ride does have tram operators aboard who give a brief history of the ski slope and surrounding area. At the bottom is a building with information and a gift shop.

Visiting the Sandia Peak Tramway was an unforgettable experience! The ride itself is smooth and offers absolutely breathtaking panoramic views of the Sandia Mountains and the Rio Grande Valley. As you ascend over 10,000 feet, the landscape transforms dramatically — from desert terrain to lush forested areas near the peak. At the top, the view is spectacular, especially during sunset when the sky turns incredible shades of orange, pink, and purple. There’s a nice observation deck and a couple of trails for those who want to explore further. It’s also a great spot for photos and soaking in the crisp mountain air. The tram operators were friendly and knowledgeable, sharing interesting facts about the area’s geography and wildlife. There’s also a restaurant at the summit, which makes for a lovely spot to relax with a drink or a meal while taking in the scenery. Highly recommend this for anyone visiting Albuquerque — it’s a unique, peaceful, and beautiful experience you won’t want to miss.

Sandia Peak Tramway – Conquer Your Fears & Enjoy the View! The Sandia Peak Tramway offers an unforgettable ride with breathtaking views of over 11,000 square miles of New Mexico. Even though I’m scared of heights, I still took the plunge—and it was absolutely worth it. Sometimes, you just have to face your fears! The ascent is smooth, and the panoramic scenery is nothing short of spectacular. One of the highlights of the experience was the tramway guide—funny, approachable, and full of interesting facts about the area. Their engaging commentary made the journey even more enjoyable and helped ease some of the nerves. At the top, visitors can take in the stunning landscape, explore hiking trails, or dine at Ten 3, a restaurant with incredible views. Whether you're a local or a visitor, this is an absolute must-do in Albuquerque!

Yelp
The Sandia Peak Tramway was such a beautiful experience! Although incredibly cold on the night we visited, we had a great time! We arrived and there was free parking along the entryway of the building. The staff was friendly and helpful. They gave us tips to make sure our trip would go smoothly. Overall, I'm really glad I bought tickets for a sunset ride. They're discounted and so worth it!

Yelp
Amazing views of Albuquerque and fun to see the terrain of the mountains up close. A bit harrowing if you hit unexpected heavy winds like we did, coming to a complete stop on our way up while swinging over a canyon 1000 feet below. Gulp. Even on a random Monday, we cooled our heels for a solid 40 minutes before boarding both directions. I recommend visiting on a weekday if at all possible to avoid long waits that would make this outing significantly less enjoyable.

Yelp
I really really hope this would be a highlight of my Albuquerque trip. We were on a road trip; driving all around NM and half of AZ. We just selected places to visit, eat, explore, etc. Therefore, we didn't wanna buy online tickets because we didn't know exactly what time we would arrive. We didn't mind waiting in line anyway. In the end, we ended up being there on Saturday around 4 pm. The wait line looked okay, -not too bad. We also didn't notice any line or sign for people who purchased their tickets online. Maybe it was just one line for everyone?? We waited more than an hour in the line. When the line moves they take lots of people in. Once we got in the group we went upstairs. It seems like who already purchased and who didn't go with the same line. We bought our tickets right there and got $10 off each ticket with City Light Flights (arrive between 4pm-8pm) deal. I didn't enjoy the tram neither going up or down. Why?? Because I am short (4'11") Everyone stays standing inside the tram (no seats) It's crowded. if you are short and not the first 10 people in the line then forget about enjoying the full view. What I saw between the heads and shoulders it was good, but I got tired of going on tiptoes. They kept the windows open. So it made going up cold. Going down was much better even though the windows were still open. The staff member, Brian or Brandon (I'm sorry I forgot his name), was so great and funny, he made lots of recommendations and jokes during the 15-mins one-way trip. At least I got some entertainment. The top was so cold and snowy. Ten 3 was located right there with a perfect view. The restaurant was busy, and had a line but the bar sitting area had lots of spots available if you were a small group. My husband offered to come back the next day to see during the day as well. But, I refused it. The mean thing was for me to see the view from inside the tram. However, seems like I have a very little chance for that. So, no thank you.

Yelp
Ventured out after work to the take the tram up the mountain to enjoy the mountain vistas and have a happy hour drink at Ten 3. The ride up was spectacular! When we got to the top we walked some of the trails and saw the ski area. The lifts were scary and ancient. Can't still be in use? Doesn't matter because it's the tram that's being reviewed Ten 3 was ok. A bit overpriced for the pour but the bartender was a master and fun to watch. The ride down was even better. Make sure to bring a jacket. Much cooler up there!

Yelp
The beauty is breathtaking. An experience we definitely enjoyed. This would be great for photography; my cell phone just didn't capture the true beauty.

Yelp
This experience wasn't everything I hoped it would be. We planned to ride the tram earlier in the week to see the sunset and city lights, but it was closed. Then we planned to drive to the summit instead, but an unseasonable snow storm made that a no-go. If you want to ride the tram and/or are planning your day around this activity, go to their website in advance to make sure the tram is running and there is availability during your planned visit. You purchase the tickets online. Note that they do close the tram if there are high winds. We ended up going on the afternoon we flew out of Albuquerque and for the cost ($76 for two adults when you include taxes and ground fees), I don't think it was worth it. The highlight was probably our drive to the tram where there were a herd of buffalo grazing. That and the vintage ski chairs at the bottom were fun to see. Fortunately, we didn't have much of a wait to board on either end and the tram operator on the way up was chatty and engaging. Not so much with the younger operator on the way down. I didn't do my research and was surprised there was no seating in the tram, so you are smushed up with other visitors for the ride. What was cool was watching a woman (older than me) ride on top of the tram. Apparently they do this three times a day to check the cables. Kudos to you! On top there was very little to do if you weren't going to the fine dining restaurant, TEN 3, or the casual Lounge at the Bar. The Gift Shop is at the bottom of the hill. So you take the 15 minute ride up to the top (10,378 feet) and walk on the red deck to look one way at the Sangre De Cristo Mountains and the other way towards the ski runs. On one side there is a crude binocular of sorts that shows you different sites, but then... I think this would be a better experience if you are a hiker, skier, or enjoying a fancy sunset dinner at TEN 3. Basically, if the tram is part of a larger activity or experience. If you are just going for the view, we had so many magnificent sights driving around the state that this didn't seem worth the effort and expense.

Yelp
Great view and experience! We bought our tickets online as they ask and you can see the available spots for the time window you are interested in. The tram gets packed at times so be aware - it takes @15 minutes up or down. The temp if @30 degrees colder up top. There are restrooms at the base and top! They had gotten 3 ' of snow 2 days before so brrrr but beautiful. We did have drinks and a snack at Ten3

Yelp
A great attraction in the Albuquerque area. I learned about it through an advertisement at the airport. It was a relatively quick stop on our way back to the airport. And having a pet won't stop you as they can accommodate them (see pictures). The staff is friendly and the facilities are nice. Some of the narrators could look more professional (like our operator on the way back). A great experience, and for all ages, in New Mexico!

Yelp
I went to the tramway on a lark after work. Tickets were immediately available, and I didn't have to wait more than 5 minutes for an outbound tram. The staff was friendly and helpful, making the ride entertaining and informative, giving history and trivia tidbits on both legs of the trip. The views from the top are spectacular, with a view of more than 30,000 square miles of the high desert and panoramic scenes of both sides of the mountain. Next trip, I will go after sunset, just to get that view.

Yelp
Still a great attraction, with a nice ride up the tramway to the top of Sandia Peak. However, there's a lot of room for improvement here. A few things to note: 1. The price has gone up to $34 round trip. 2. There are lines set up outside under the shade, but the line blocks the entrance to the ski museum. 3. The gift shop prices are inflated even compared to other local gift shops in tourist areas, including old town. Not a good thing to be a leader in. Take the tram, but don't buy anything.

Yelp
Such an amazing night, took the tram up Sandia to have drinks and dinner. If you're scared of heights, this is not for you!! We loved it!!
google avatar

Linda O.

Yelp
We went on a Monday at 3:00. It wasn't super crowded but the skiing wasn't open. We were lucky to be at the front of the line and able to get a window spot. The really packed people in do if you are at the back of the line you have a center spot on the tram and if short, no view. The ride takes 15 minutes and the driver commentates with some information and humor. At the top you can enjoy many different viewpoints. The restaurant TEN 3 is a bit pricy but does have great views.
google avatar

Jo L.

Yelp
We were not able to take the tram. It was closed on a Wednesday. We did drive up. We didn't get the word that they were closed. Website said closed Tuesdays.

Yelp
The tram is a must experience when in Albuquerque, for residents and visitors! Smooth process, depending on the time can be pretty busy so be prepared for some wait time but they were ready with a new group as soon as they could. Have 2 cars going and arrive every 15min. The views are incredible and 360 views in the cabin. Staff was great and friendly, gift shop and restaurant on top. Many trails and views to see on top as well.
google avatar

Molly W.

Yelp
I really don't think I can recommend this experience. The view was pretty but the whole process put a damper on the experience. You have to make a reservation in advance and you get a window of time instead of a specific reservation time. We waited in line for over two hours (got there at the start of our time) before we actually got to load the tram. Even after that line outside, you have to wait in an additional line inside. You can't get around the line by showing up towards the end of your time window, if you have a 2 PM to 4 PM window, no matter what time you show up you you're gonna be waiting for hours. Then you are piled into the tram very tightly, there's almost no room to move around. Wherever you stand is the view, you're gonna get the whole time. When we were at the top, it was also very underwhelming, there is a restaurant so if you wanna go up there for a meal that would be more worth it than just going up and coming back down. The only thing you can take from this experience is that you've now been on the longest tramway at this height in the US. Seriously, skip this and catch some views somewhere else!!

Yelp
Words cannot describe this experience. On a clear beautiful day the ride on the tramway is absolutely breathtaking. I wish I had the words to express how meaningful this experience was for me. Step 1. Check in (seamless process), check out the gift shop, wait for the tram Step 2. Get on the the tram (the guide was very funny and personable) Step 3. Gasp in absolute awe and enjoy the most amazing views I have ever seen Step 4. Arrive at the top, walk around a bit (to note it can be very cold and windy - come prepared for wind and temperature changes) Step 5. Sit down at the bar and have a local beer Step 6. Get on the tram back down and have to make multiple brief stops because of the wind (yup. this happens) Tips: 1) check the weather and book the day beforehand knowing very well that weather changes and the wind is a very real up there. Be prepared for a bit of swaying. 2) if you aren't used to high altitude - do your research and drink LOTS OF WATER. Also, alcohol hits differently so pace yourself. 3) bring a sweater. Even if it's 88 degrees that day, it will be very cold at the top. 4) take it all in. It's absolutely incredible and 100% worth it - just be patient if the weather decides to have some hiccups

Yelp
I am scared of heights and felt very comfortable going up the mountain. I think it is because the tram is big and doesn't swing like others. It is a must see place when visiting Albuquerque. We went on a short hike and had a drink at the restaurant. The view is breathtaking.
google avatar

Tucker J.

Yelp
Hands down worst experience in NM. Sent us up in bad weather - took us 40 minutes to get up (normally takes 15) and then because of lightning we were asked to stay inside the minute we arrived. Closed the restaurant 25 minutes later and we sat up in line for OVER 3 HOURS before we could get back down. People missed their flights, and workers did not have any solution available other than to wait. I get that weather is uncontrollable, but if there is even a HINT that it could get bad - DON'T SEND people up!!!! If you are on a weather hold - just leave and come back another day! It was a horrible way to end our trip!

Yelp
This is a really nice Tram experience with a outstanding view. Would make a perfect dinner date, but must plan ahead as the restaurant is always booked in advance. We had called the day before we decided to go, but was all booked. The Tram is a nice ride with a wonderful view. I gave this 4 stars because I thought the pricing was a bit high per person plus tax on top of that. Two people cost $75.92. That's a bit much, let alone if you were planning dinner at the restaurant or skiing. It would be something of a ounce in a while treat yourself. That being said, it has a nice little gift shop at the bottom with lots of cool stuff. Worth a visit.
google avatar

Heidi A.

Yelp
Definitely a must visit. I'm glad I went on the tram before moving away from Albuquerque. It's a very well-maintained facility and the guide was very helpful! It can get a little busy and full on the tram itself and seating is scarce. Standing for 15 minutes especially if I can't hold onto anything was a little difficult on my back.
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
Three of us booked for the 3 to 5 slot on a busy Saturday in October. We arrived 3:30 and boarded 5:30. Stood in line for that time without food or water, no place to seat, some shade! Live music worked hard but we did not need more noise. Fortunately, it was only about 70 degrees and the view from the top was excellent. They should give information as to how long the wait will be. Let us know whether we have time to eat, drink, or use the restroom. It should be easy to predict waiting times because a tram holds 48 people and they run four flights per hour. They should send a survey after the visit, ask people what they want, and deliver some thins that the customer needs. Bring a mask. Must be able to stand for 2 hours unless someone holds your place in line

Yelp
Wow, wow, wow! Incredibly beautiful landscape. Reminded me of Glacier National Park. Definitely recommend this baby! We had a reservation for the restaurant but we couldn't make that.

Yelp
Already planning our next visit up Sandia! Pretty views, fun hikes, and a nice restaurant to stop at for coffee/tea and warm up.

Yelp
This is of course is an Albuquerque staple. If you had time to do only one thing in the city, this would be it. The views are gorgeous. Super accessible from the city. If you are from a lower elevation, be bit cautious of the altitude.

Yelp
Beautiful views of the Sandia. Loved the outdoor picnic tables at the top that you can use for lunch.

Yelp
Our decision to book this tram ride ruined our whole vacation. I really cannot recommend you DON'T DO the tram enough. We got to the tram early allowing plenty of time knowing it was a very busy time of year for them. We planned up to an hour wait time but ended up waiting in line an hour and a half to get onto the tram. We were hoping to see the sun go down at the top but it took way too long of a wait so we missed it. They loaded so many people onto the tram (I believe they said 40 people) that we could barely move without hitting anyone. It was like being sardines in a tin can no joke. I tried my hardest to keep my hands as flat as I could against my sides so I wouldn't bump anyone. I'm handicapped and there was only one seat on the tram and the seat was taken immediately by kids. I could not see any of the view as you could not see out a single window with all the people. My boyfriend is much taller and also could not see out the windows. The whole point of going on a tram is to see the beautiful view.. as soon as we got to the top the restaurant was closing in 10 minutes of when we arrived. We immediately ran over to the restaurant and were in the front of the line to get in but when we were next in line when the host came out and said the restaurant was at capacity and we could not even go to the bar. We just wanted to grab a quick drink at the bar! The line was so long to go back down the mountain we decided just to get right back in line to go back down since our experience was so bad. It took over an hour and a half again of us waiting in line just to get back on the tram to go back down the mountain. By the time we got to the bottom of the mountain it had taken so long in lines there and back that we missed our dinner reservations we had planned for us when we got back off the mountain down below. We wasted hours of our vacation just waiting in line and it was a huge waste of money and our time. We were so sad we ever went on the tram. By the time we got home all the restaurants were closed or closing. It ruined our entire night and we regretted doing the tram so much.

Yelp
This is a must do when visiting Albuquerque NM. We grabbed an Uber to the Sandra Peak Tramway. Very important to go online and go on Instagram to check the hours and the weather. The tram will stop or shut down completely in case of strong winds!! We went online after checking the site and bought our round trip tickets. The tickets are costly but worth it as the view is breathtaking!! Please note the temperature at the peak is around 20 degrees colder so dress accordingly, or pack more clothing ( we saw several people get to the peak walk for 5 minutes and then had to head back down as they did not have jackets. ***The day we went up the temperature at the peak was 30 degrees and we got the first snow of the year (watch my video). The tram ride up and down takes about 20 minutes each way and yes, you can feel the temperature change as you climb. The views are amazing. The trams each have guides on them that tell you about the mountains and the peak. When you get to the top of the peak there are restrooms, there is also a restaurant with one side that is fancy and one side that is casual. There are water fountains there also but if you plan to hike for a bit as we did pack water bottles to fill. There are several hiking trails. Some are easy while others are difficult. Pick one and have an adventure. The trip starts at elevation 6,559 and ends at elevation 10,378. WOW what a ride. Thank you to all the nice people working here you made this experience wonderful and memorable. This was one of the first things we did after checking into the hotel and eating something. I highly recommend this experience as it was beautiful!!

Yelp
If visiting New Mexico and wanna be adventurous please come here. The views are breath taking. Pictures wouldn't give this place justice. I would love to come back and visit. Very beautiful place to hike.

Yelp
It's been several years since I last visited the tram. I forget how long it is. You don't realize how high the mountain is til your standing in the tram cart going up the wire. The whole trip up is an experience in itself. You see some beautiful scenery up there along with the full view of Albuquerque and the surrounding areas. Once you reach the top the view is just incredible. This time around there was plenty of snow all around. Had I not been on a tight deadline to get back to work in time from my lunch break I'd of stayed up there longer. In the building you enter to board down the tram they have a wall with interesting facts about the area. They also have a pristine pine cone on display. It left me like wow look at that pinecone! Lol Overall it's a great unique experience to do whether your a local or even just visiting the city. You get a spectacular view of ABQ and New Mexicos glorious landscape.

Yelp
As part of a group tour, we had the opportunity to take the tram. There were 30+ of us and we all fit into one tram! It was fascinating to watch the mechanics and functionality of the tram as it docked. The guide/conductor gave insight throughout the trip and was open to all questions from the group. It's a 15-20 minute ride up so just be prepared. Up top we had a bit to explore before jumping back on. As someone who is terrified of heights, it was a compromise to going up a mountain.

Yelp
EXCELLENT scenery Definitely enjoy the view and listen to the historical tour the guide gives on your ride.

Yelp
A 15 minute drive from downtown Albuquerque, a fantastic way to see breathtaking views of Albuquerque. Tickets must be purchased online, and the day we went we purchased them on our phone in the parking lot. We were fortunate because a tram was waiting, so from the time we parked we were on the tram in less than 10 minutes. The tram holds about 40 people and it is pretty packed, so it can be hard to see if you are not near a window. The tram ride is approximately 15- 20 minutes. Along the way the guide provides information about the Sandia Mountain, the tram, hiking trails and wildlife. Our guide was very informative. The tram travels over 10,000 square feet from beginning to the top . When we disembarked, we were shocked by the cold air. It is at least 20 degrees colder on the mountain top and we were not prepared, however, the views were worth being a little chilly. We were fortunate to experience the sunset and the views were amazing. There is a restaurant on top, the 10 3, named because it is 10,300 feet above sea level, but reservations were required and they did not accept walk ins. We were able to sit at the bar and there was a limited food menu, and a bigger selection of cocktails. The Sandia Watermelon Cider was excellent. We did not hike, but we did walk around the mountain top and the views were not disappointed. Tickets were $33, and we thought it was worth it.

Yelp
I heard good things about Sandia Peak Tramway and I love doing "different" things when visiting a city so I did my research and bought tickets the day before we wanted to ride. I was a bit trepidatious about the ticket price, thinking that over $30 per person for a 15 min ride (one of them in darkness) was a bit much but after the experience, I think it's worth it. When we drove up to the tramway center, there was a lot of parking. A lot. We thought it would not be busy because of this but our tram was completely full. The experience with the tram staff was all 5 star and great. Friendly and informative. I liked how the tram operator was telling us info about the mountain. The ride was so smooth and yet fairly thrilling, especially if you're by the window. There are points when the tram "rocks and rolls" and it's almost like a roller coaster. Loved it. Also, if you're worried about being too cold, the tram center on both ends is indoors so you can stay warm before getting on the kind of cold tram. The views were spectacular. I love hiking in Las Vegas because I like looking at the beauty of the desert. This was just like that except with a cool ride instead of hiking boots. A really nice sunset to be seen, if you can manage the time right, as well. With that being said, moderate your experience, knowing that this place does get busy and the tram will fill up. We were lucky enough to get a place by the window each ride, but people are kind of crammed in the space. If I counted what the other guests brought to the experience, I would have given 3 stars but the tramway can't control people and their bad behavior so I can't fault them on that. It would just be nice if people wouldn't talk over the tram operator who is giving us actually cool information. It would be nice if someone didn't literally shove me out of the way of exiting the tram so that they could have their girlfriend be in front of me. It would be nice if people talked to one another instead of cutting in line or pushing people to get to be by the window.
google avatar

Kristi W.

Yelp
Rude staff for boarding. Argumentative and weird. Huge lines and not managed efficiently. If you buy a ticket for 3:00 the expectation is you should arrive at 1:00. If you do not, the boarding attendant is happy to chastise your party and continually remind you that you were "late". It's comical other than we are customers but apparently that's not valued. I won't bring visitors to this venue again. Not worth the price tag or aggravation. Overrated. Terrible business strategy. Get it together Albuquerque. Embarrassing as usual.

Yelp
Such a cool must do in Albuquerque! I suggest going up during the day, hanging out at the restaurant at the top for a meal or a drink and then coming back down at sunset. If you come back once it's already dark there's not much to see especially because Albuquerque doesn't have a skyline. We went at the end of October and booked our tickets 2 days in advance, although lots of people were buying tickets on the spot. The biggest frustrating thing was we arrived around 5:45pm (sunset was 6:15pm) and had to wait for the next tram to come - no problem. We were at the front of the line excited to get first pick of a good spot to take pictures. The tram arrived a little after 6 and the staff seemed to take their sweet time to get it prepped and ready for the next trip, so by the time we got on it was close to 6:15. We still got some good pictures but it would've been so much better just 10 minutes earlier. It was so frustrating as we went specifically for sunset, as I'm sure so many others did in the group. The views at the top were cool, though the tram ride was more impressive. The restaurant was nice but not a ton of food options so we stayed for a drink and then came back down. Overall a cool way to experience Albuquerque!

Yelp
June 5, 2023 - Sandia Peak Tramway, (Albuquerque, NM) We arrived at the base of the tramway at 4:10 for a 4:30 pm departure to the top on Sandia Peak, a 4,000+ plus foot climb to 10,378 feet. But not so fast! First we had to stop off at the gift shop to pick up a little schwag - a Scandia Tramway lapel pin, refrigerator magnet, and tee shirt. The gift shop has lots of New Mexico related gifts and artwork. Our tram actually left at 4:40. It's about a 15 minute ride to go up about 4,000 feet over 2.7 miles. Of course the views are stunning as you climb out of Albuquerque's 80 degree high desert cactus heat to the 10,300+ foot high, conifer-lined, jagged Sandia Peak in the Cibola National Forest. It's 20 degrees cooler when you get to the top, and the weather is subject to change, so dress accordingly. You'll see lots of beautiful rock formations and forest as you look up, and various landmarks like the Rio Grande River and the Albuquerque airport and city propper down below. There are also lots of great views of other mountain ranges and plateaus as you look out towards the west. Once you get to the top, there is a viewing platform and access to the Ten 3 bar and restaurant, as well as access to miles of trails. As we looked out, we saw a massive rain storm moving our way. First stop, Ten 3 bar and then on to 5:30 dinner reservation at the restaurant with unmatchable 10,300 foot high view looking down and out to the impending storm headed our way!

Yelp
We waited about an hour and a half each way to board the tram. If you're prepared for that, the 15 minute ride is nice

Yelp
I went on a slow day, so the wait wasn't too long, but I can't imagine on a busy day... Had a great drink at the top and then walked around in back of the buildings which is really beautiful. Stayed for the sunset , which was amazing.. I didn't like the actual tram car set up...They said it could fit 45 people..We only had 30 and everyone was still packed in .. It seemed like only the people against the rails could see anytihing.. I would highly suggest everybody go, but not on a busy day unless you don't mind waiting

Yelp
I'd rate this place as the # 1 thing to do in Albuquerque area. Few notes for fellow yelpers 1. Reservations are recommended and the best way to do so would be to make a booking on their website 24-48 hours in advance. 2. The best time to visit this place would be close to sunset so that you can experience some spectacular views on both sides of Albuquerque (facing down Mexico as well as upwards onto Santa Fe). 3. It gets really cold at the summit and hence I'd recommend wearing enough winter-wear to keep yourself warm 4. It takes ~30 minutes to get up to the summit once you arrive at the tramway (15-20 minutes of waiting in the line + 15 minutes of journey) 5. There are rest-rooms right next to the tramway along with a wonderful cafe and ample parking space.

Yelp
Fun way to see ABQ and do a little hiking. I didn't register to dress for hiking- wore a cute outfit instead. The tram- be prepared to be stacked like sardines. Little airflow and somewhat stuffy. The views & casual hiking- worth it.

Yelp
We had out of town guests so we bought 4 tickets for Thursday. It was windy so they shut the tram down. Our guests left town on Friday so I asked for a refund. The refused to refund my money.

Yelp
Each tram ride is about 15 minutes. $29/per adult. Last tram out is about 8PM. Closed due to weather today. Should have guessed when we couldn't see any trams going back and forth at all. They could update their VM to let us know before making the trek out here. :/ Elevation would be decent up the rock, the lookout point from where you start is decent enough, although not at 6,559 elevation at the top.

Yelp
Had a lovely ride up to the peak and enjoyed some hiking. We went to the little cabin up on the cliff side, which would have been a pretty easy little jaunt if it weren't for the elevation. Even with the breathlessness it wasn't very challenging and didn't take too long. And the views were worth it! Then we enjoyed some drinks and brisket fries at the restaurant at the top of the tramway. All in all, a great excursion on our little trip!

Yelp
Beautiful ride and the scenery is breathtaking. Take time time to talk to the tram operators. They can tell you so much about the area and have great stories to tell. Anywhere you stand in the tram will give you amazing views. Buy online before you plan to go. There is an upper parking lot which is better for people with mobility issues. Absolutely worth going.

Yelp
DON'T DO IT!!! This was a horrible experience and it was not an isolated incident!!! It is sad how poorly run this is, they need new management! They oversell tickets and, in our case, they had people from the day before coming as well because it went down the day before and they would not give those patrons refunds!. The management will do NOTHING to make it right. The manager Michael Donovan literally accused us of lying about our experience and hung up on me. As you can see from other reviews, Jessica F. will just thank me for a review and say she is sorry. We bought our tickets the day before for the 5-8pm window and we arrived early around 4:30pm because the website says it can be up to an hour wait. We stood in the line for an hour and there was no movement, so I checked in with guest services who assured us that they were taking care of the problem and reminded us there were NO REFUNDS. We witnessed several very upset patrons. We waited another hour and the line had hardly moved, so we checked in with guest services again. We expressed our concern that the sun was going down and we did not want to go up in the dark. They again told us there were NO REFUNDS and that it would still be a spectacular view at night. We finally made it onto the tram after 7:30pm. They cram 50 people into each one, by the way, so don't expect to be comfortable for the standing 15 minute ride. It was pitch black dark all the way up, we couldn't see a thing. I am deathly afraid of heights, but an adrenaline junkie and.....nothing. I couldn't see anything. They don't even have lights along the path to help with some kind of visual at that time of night. The staff taking you up is supposed to talk to you about the tram and Sandia, but that didn't happen, probably because she couldn't see to talk about anything. We finally get up to the top and the average person can not get good pics because either you can see the people or you can see the background, not both, its too dark. Not that great of a view to see city lights from far away. You can see that in most major cities. We were all starving because, at this point we had not eaten since before 4pm so we head to the casual restaurant and it is CLOSED. Then we headed to the bathrooms and they were CLOSED!!!!! How do you close the bathrooms with people up there and more were coming up. We decided we had enough and headed to go back down and the line was going out the door. My elderly mother had started to get altitude sickness and there was no one there to help. It took us over 1 1/2 hours to get back down. There was no food, no bathrooms, and we were stuck outside most of that time freezing, it was in the 40s. Once you buy the tickets they hold you captive and don't care what kind of experience you have. I am having to dispute the charges with my credit card company because this is not what I paid for. This wasted so much of our time and there were lots of other things we could have done instead. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! THEY WILL NOT VOLUNTARILY GIVE YOU A REFUND!

Yelp
Loved the experience minus the crazy lady next to us (if you're afraid of heights) don't do it because you're going over 10,000 in elevation....we got stuck standing next to a crazy lady terrified and she was so rude expected everyone in the tram around her to make way for her entitled fears as if we revolved around her....she sure got a mouth full from me accusing my child of crowding her space (excuse me it's a tram lady if you're gonna come into a tram expect to be standing shoulder to shoulder idiot) but we won't get into that.... 1. Easy to find & purchase tickets online simply who the attendant your QR Code 2. Person operating the carts were very knowledgeable & informative about the history of these mountains 2. Smooth ride up & down 3. A bit pricey but well worth the experience Best part was once you got to the mountain top dine at Ten 3 (make reservations) & ask to be seated by the window overlooking the sunset go down in all of NM...so so beautiful no photo will do it justice....as we ascended down at night fall all of NM lit up & my daughter described this gorgoeus view as tons of glitter on a plate....

Yelp
Fun and cold way to spend a January day. Views were breathtaking, but not dressing for the 20 degree difference at the rip shortened our stay. Great cabin personality. I forgot his name but very knowledgeable and pretty funny

Yelp
Absolutely a must if visiting even for a day. What a great way to freshen up and to view the city (and surrounding area) from different perspective. And how not to visit Sandia Peaks or Watermelon Peaks , called that way due to color of the pink granite during sunset. We visited Albuquerque in May, 2023, and we left this activity for the end of the day, to enjoy the sunset and it definitely didn't disappoint. Tickets were purchased online day before, since we were aware it is a popular activity, so therefore visiting during sunset could be sold out, but we also wanted to make sure we don't get surprised by sudden closure due to weather conditions. It was a perfect afternoon. Parking lot was easily marked, and we enjoyed walking around for 10-15 minutes observing the nature and cactuses in bloom. Entrance to the tramway is located on the 2nd floor, right next to greatest gift shop with absolutely any gift you could possibly imagine. Our time slot was after 7, and the temperature was in mid 80's.. The ride itself was very beautiful, absolutely enhanced by the narration of the guide. Once 2.7 miles ride finished and the doors opened, we stepped out on 4,000+ ft higher elevation and probably at least 20+ degrees cooler temperatures.. and it was getting colder every minute as the sun was going down. On top of it, it was pretty windy, so we were cold, but we powered thru it, walked around for an hour and that took the 8.30 ride back. On the day we were there, the restaurant wasn't open, but honestly the nature and the views are so incredible that I might have skipped on the meal just to see it all. I wished we planned more time and included a hike, light one, just to soak up some more views.
