3 Best Day Trips from Portland, Maine: Ogunquit, Freeport, and the Kennebunks | Condé Nast Traveler

"Known for years in Kennebunkport as Salty Acres Campground, it was bought and renamed Sandy Pines by local hoteliers Tim Harrington and Debra Lennon, who have also produced a handful of upscale and luxury spots around town. The entire campsite was renovated and reopened in 2017 with glamping tents and retro-cool mobile homes, a nostalgia-driven general store (peddling everything from s’mores fixings to lobster rolls), a heated saltwater pool, sparkling new bathhouses, and a swanky, modern lodge centered around games and a fireplace." - Alexandra Hall

My husband and I spent two nights here in the couple’s safari tents. The tents are very nicely done and very clean. The bath houses were very clean but a little small. The whole campground is absolutely huge. We already plan on going back at some point with the kids. We didn’t mind the walk to the beach that was a little over a mile, it’s a safe walk with shoulders for walking. Would definitely recommend.

We really enjoyed the family glamping tent we stayed in at Sandy Pines Campground! The accommodations were absolutely beautiful and so comfy. The campground was clean and well designed. We also enjoyed the proximity to Goose Rocks beach. Staff was friendly and they did an excellent job of keeping the facilities clean. I would recommend this campground to anyone looking to visit Kennebunkport and we will be returning in the future!

We really enjoyed our stay here. The cottages were a great option instead of camping and the staff were all very friendly. The general store also has practically everything you need including reasonably priced alcohol, snacks, and coffee. We will definitely be back!

LOVED our 3 day trip at Sandy Pines. Plenty of activities for kids, family friendly, and loved our little glamping site. The staff was lovely and the grounds were just gorgeous. We loved the kayaking and paddle boarding through the salt marsh to the beach. So perfect!

We did some tent camping at Sandy Pines Campground and had a great experience. The tent sites were clean, level, and well-graded, making setup easy. The ground was flat and comfortable for sleeping. The kids loved the heated pool and even swam in the rain. The staff were friendly and took the time to engage with my kids’ talkative nature, even while they were busy working. The campground was quiet at night, well-maintained, and had everything we needed for a relaxing family trip. It’s a great spot for enjoying the outdoors with comfort and kindness.

Beautiful location, great amenities, nice staff, incredible clean and new. We stayed end of May, from Sat to Tue in a Whimsical Retreat cabin with private bathroom and super spacious area. 3 adults and 2 little kids perfectly comfortable. The campground was not packed at all, we enjoyed quiet and relaxed time and kids were able to play safely around the cabin. Only thing that brought us a concern was that we found at least 3 ticks on our clothes - they had the campground sprayed on that Monday, but still, it was annoying to encounter those bugs.

We stayed here for two nights and, unfortunately, had a disappointing experience. The campground was very loud, and the bathrooms near our site were consistently dirty—one was even flooded. We ended up driving to use the facilities near the RV hookups, which were in better condition. Quiet hours for the play areas are listed as 8 PM to 8 AM, but these were not enforced. Our campsite was located right beside a basketball court, which was not marked on the map—had we known, we would have chosen a different site. People were bouncing basketballs until 10:30 PM, and then another group arrived to play as early as 6:50 AM. It was frustrating and made it difficult to rest. Campers were also playing loud music well past quiet hours. At around 11 PM, another camper finally yelled, “People are trying to sleep—turn it off,” which seemed to be the only action taken. We tried calling the office, but it was closed, and there was no clear direction on who to contact for after-hours issues. We’re not expecting the Ritz-Carlton, but we do expect basic cleanliness and that the posted rules be enforced. Our stay, unfortunately, missed the mark.

I loved my solo tent-camping stay at Sandy Pines. I had just dropped my son at his summer camp and was up for a little adventure (and an overnight stay) on my way back home to CT. I rented basic tent spot #16 and brought my own gear. I cannot say enough good things: I was welcomed warmly at the reception desk, my site had a view of the grass/marsh, and I enjoyed a swim in the saltwater pool, 2 hot showers and 2 campfires before getting back on the road bright and early the next morning. Since I was there on a Thursday in mid-June, the campground was hardly crowded and the overnight hours were tranquil and silent. I look forward to returning and doing it all again at this time next year.

Yelp
My third time visiting. It's the ultimate experience in glamping. The perfect balance of comfort and outdoorsy. Every tent has a bed, electricity, furniture, refrigerator and outdoor your private camp fire pit, cooler. What really stands out to me is the staff, especially the General Store. ROBIN and the other woman whose name I never got were super helpful and sweet. It's a remarkable experience!!

Yelp
Overall, a very fun family-oriented campground. Staff were helpful and friendly and the bathroom and showers were clean. We stayed in a tent-only site and it was fairly small, only enough room to fit our car plus two set-up tents. Close proximity to Kennebunkport and Goose Rock beach was definitely a plus. Only real drawback was the aggressive mosquitos! We came here in late July and they basically ate us alive even though we used bug spray and citronella candles.

Yelp
We stayed here for 4 nights in a FHU site in area C. Campground facilities are nice and well kept. However the management leads a lot to be desired. Pool requires a reservation day of but many people just show up. It's not heated in spite of what's said. Also water was Murky and dirty. On check in just a photocopied map that's hardly readable. No escort to site and no campground rules or regs or other guidance provided. Had to hunt out location of dumpsters for trash. We will not stay here again.

Yelp
1st time staying at this campground. Well laid out grounds. Obviously at the time of year we went it was extremely quiet. The sites look bigger than they appear online but most are buffered with vegetation. The pool area is beautiful with a hot tub next to it. Only a mile from the beach which was nice because I was able to let my dog stretch his legs and get him pooped out, The close proximity to the ocean was really nice. The campground is very well maintained and very clean. My only "con" would be the speed bumps to slow auto traffic as they were useless. Saw a couple of cars zipping through the campground. These appeared to come from the "glamping" sites so I chalk it up as being unaware of campground common sense. Not sure if the same issues exists in the peak season. Will definitely be back and have already spread the word to my camping friends to check this campground out.

Yelp
Labor Day weekend was the first time I ever stayed here, and my boyfriend and I LOVED it. I don't even know where to start. We stayed in one of their glamp tents, which came equipped with our own picnic table, fire pit, parking area, and a porch with a cooler for us to use and lounge chairs. Inside the tent, was one of the comfiest king-sized beds I've ever slept in, a mini fridge, a kitchen table and chairs, two lounge chairs and a dresser. It also had a portable air conditioner if we needed it. It was a little cooler that weekend, so we didn't, but it was nice to have the option. The tent itself was pretty good at keeping bugs out, if you kept the it zippered. The grounds themselves were very well kept. We found the bathrooms to be extremely clean, and saw people cleaning them at least once a day. They also had so many different kinds of places you could stay in, other than the glamp tents. You could rent a space for your own campsite, an RV, or they had unique retreats like cottages, Conestoga wagons, huts, these bubble dome looking things, and an old-school van. All extremely Instagram worthy. We also thought the place was in a great location, only taking us 12-15 minutes to get to downtown Kennebunk. We also felt really safe here. Each visitor was given a parking pass and you must go through a gate to enter the campsite - I liked this. The employees in the general store and at the front desk were super friendly and helpful. They told us about kayak and boat rentals, and tours we could do from the campsite. Also, the general store had everything you needed if you forgot anything, and sold so many smore packages/combinations. They encourage roasting marshmallows. My one complaint with the general store was how long it took to get breakfast in the morning. They had a kitchen and a small breakfast menu, and it took me over 20 minutes to get a bagel with cream cheese. Despite what another review said, they seemed very dog friendly. Like everyone there had dogs. I'd definitely recommend this place if you're looking for a unique stay experience near Kennebunk. We can't wait to go back next year.

Yelp
One of the best campgrounds we've stayed at! We've been about 5+ times since last year. They have made even more improvements this year. Everything from the bathrooms to the pool is unique. Very clean. My niece has a ball on the playground. Beautiful salt water, heated pool. We try to make it to Goose Rocks Beach when we go- also a must if you like the beach. Even more convenient now that the front office sells Beach passes. Never stayed in the glamping tents or the carriages but they look nice! RV/trailering sites are great. We love the crushed stone.. makes it so easy to get the trailer level and also reduces dirt being tracked through the camper. The owners have really put a lot of thought into this campground. Now they need a hot tub (or two) for the cooler camping months !

Yelp
This is the nicest and cleanest campground I've ever been to. The bathrooms/showers are spotless. There's a pool which is always very clean, a nice seating area outside w/ lawn games, a general store stocked with all sorts of goodies and necessities. You're very close to Goose Rocks Beach too if you want to swim in the ocean. My parents have a RV hookup there. It is wonderful. If you want to really get away from it all and have a nice camping experience, this place is the best.

Yelp
This place is amazing and has been completely renovated and reinvented in 2016. The bathrooms are immaculate, the pool area and playground are clean and outstanding for a day at camp. We stayed in one of the new Glamping sites - Tradewinds, and it was the coolest thing ever. The beach is only 5 minutes away. Seriously the best campground I've ever been too.

Yelp
Excellent location and easy bike ride to the beach. The staff and manager were super nice. The general store has everything you need and more. The breakfast sandwich's on the weekend are bomb.

Yelp
I do not typically write reviews; however, I feel that my recent experience at Sandy Pines justifies this poor review. My family has been camping at Sandy Pines for four years, along with a large group of friends. We start there every Memorial Day weekend and end there on Columbus Day weekend. We have always looked forward to seeing staff that we have met over the years, and felt that we were well liked by those we befriended. Prior to leaving, we always book for the next year. This has been the same routine every time, which mimics the policy of most campgrounds that we stay at. Even in the past when Sandy Pines changed their computer system we were told our sites were blocked as a group for the following year...no problem. Unfortunately, this year a group of campers from out of state went to the office and booked all of our sites the day before we were even set to leave. I was standing in line behind them as this occurred, thinking that they were booking a different weekend. When my group tried to rebook for 2021, the lady in the office told us that the group in line before us had just booked all of our sites. Her response....sorry I cant help you, we opened booking early. She then told us to email the manager. Obviously this was, and still is, very upsetting since we were never told of the change. When one of the members from our group emailed the manager, she stated that the staff in the office was not aware of how things work for holiday weekends. She advised that she would figure it out and contact us the following week when she returned to work. After several emails and calls went unanswered it was apparent that the problem would not be rectified, and that not responding to us is how the situation would be dealt with. I hate to believe that the reason we were ousted by this campground is political, but we were told that one of the owners did not like our Republican flags, and she was the person that opposed changing the reservations. Very unfortunate and disappointing! Obviously after being treated in this manner we will never return to this campground, nor will we recommend staying there.

Yelp
I go camping ...a lot. I happened upon this campsite in my quest for our annual Maine camping trip...this one wins hands down . It was so good, so nice that I almost did not want to share this camp ground treasure with anyone else. It's secluded away from highways, it's green trees and plant life everywhere. It's super clean. The pool and play areas for kids are awesome. They even have glamping sites with themed tents, a frames, cottages or regular tent sites. I found my secret favorite campsite for Maine and now I'm sharing it with all of you. Worth every cent!

Yelp
Probably one of my favorite campgrounds. Well maintained, clean, and close to the beach. We love the pool, and privacy of the sites. Sandy Pine raises the bar on camping in style.
