My husband and I had an amazing stay at Sandy Point Lodge, all due to the wonderful family who owns it. We got great tips on fishing right from the property, and had an amazing day on the lake with morning guided fishing, drop off to explore the Ellsworth Rock Gardens and to take a beautiful hike at Locator Lake, and a bonus tour of some coves around the lake. They cleaned and prepared our fish for dinner and the meal was amazing! This stay was the highlight of our Voyageurs NP trip and we thank Al, Tanner and Brooke for their hospitality!

Nice family run lodge. Not much in the area and we are always trying to fit in as much as possible. That they had a room with a restaurant attached was a plus. Had a ln egg breakfast one night and smoothie the other. Both were good. I’ve had more rural stays that don’t offer a reliable internet connection so appreciated they did. It rained hard in the morning on the first day so was nice to be able to catch a few episodes on Netflix as we waited for the weather to clear up. Mosquitoes were apparently not as bad in 2025 compared to previous years. They do have a fly swatter in the room and you should expect to manage bugs though. I hate them but t’s just part of the area unfortunately. Would definitely recommend for anyone looking to explore the area.

We arrived at our cabin and the first thing we saw was the beach, cluttered with toys and wooden boards. My first thought was getting a nail stuck in my foot. The dock was twisted and broken. We unpacked our belongings into our cabin and I went to wash my hands. When I turned the hot water on, I immediately smelt a rotten egg smell, which is from the water heater because I work on them. My mom wanted to connect to WiFi and went to the office to ask for the password. The boy working there gave her a password to use. It didn’t work, and after several attempts, he finally gave her the correct password. She said thank you, but before she left he was smart with her and tried to make her feel stupid for not knowing the password. I went to dry out a glass in the sink and filled it with water. I was about to take a sip of water and smelt something bad. I dumped the water out and smelt the towel. The towel smelt dirty and the other towels were wrinkly, making me think they weren’t cleaned. I went to the office to tell them about the smell and to get new towels and rags. Again, the same kid looked at me like I was stupid and just gave a smirk. He said he’d go and replace them for me, and he came back with only rags, and no towels. I told him there were only rags there and we needed towels to dry the dishes. He said they were towels, and I told him they are rags, and he acted like he didn’t care. I asked him again and he said, “ok, I’ll go check again”. He came back with 2 dish towels this time. We were very upset with the way we’d been treated so far and the condition of things. We wanted to change resorts, but worried about nothing being available. The next morning we were making breakfast and my mom wanted to make coffee. She said “look at this” and I came over and she showed me mold in the coffee pot. We took it over to the office, and the same kid from the previous day came in and we showed him the mold. He was smirking again and asked “What do you want me to do? Clean it?”, and we said no and told him we wanted to talk with the owner of the resort. We started listing off all of the things we were dissatisfied with and he said “well, if you stay here you’ll probably start noticing all kinds of other things, too. He said they experienced a flood four years ago and were still rebuilding, trying to make it an excuse for the poor service and unclean cabin. We had drove to another resort that morning and it looked nothing like our resort, didn’t look like they were recovering from a flood. They told us the reason for the messy beach area was because of all the children, but that doesn’t explain wooden boards all over the ground and who knows what else that could poke somebody’s foot. The owner finally arrived and we told her about our experience so far and said that we’d like to leave and get our money back. You would think most places would do this for all of the issues we’d had in just 24 hours. Instead, she tried to come up with more excuses about everything, and said that they’d provided great service so far. They said the best they could do is let us leave and not charge us for the rest of the week, but keep our $400 deposit. We already had a cabin held for us at another resort and just wanted to leave, so we said ok and left. A couple of days later we were thinking about it more and thought that it would only be fair if they refund us the entire amount. We called them and she answered. We told her we’d like the $400 deposit back and she refused, stating once again that they’d provided great service to us and had to wash our dirty dishes after we left. We told her that we would be taking it up with the Better Business Bureau and she said ok, and hung up on us. They have an excuse for everything, they can’t take any criticism, and they act like they’re going out of their way to do their job.

The short response is, the location is great, the lodging has a nostalgic feel of the classic outdoor experience and the staff and service of this family owned and operated resort were exceptional. Next time we are in northern Minnesota we are coming back here in a heartbeat. Keep reading for more details - to give some background, my wife and I are fishermen and also love to visit national parks (Voyageurs was our 55th Nat. Park). For those visiting Voyageurs, this is in the "middle" of the park (that you can drive to), so the location is perfect to use as a base. It's about 45 min from either the Rainey Lake or Ash River visitor centers and the Lake Kabetogama visitors center is just down the road. As for fishing, this is a premiere lake for Walleye. If you've got kids, they can fish right off the dock (the resort has gear they can borrow) and some of the cabins are right on the water as well. So, we asked Al (one of the owners) about doing what I call a "Fish and Park" day package, and what he put together was great! We started off the morning with a few hours of guided fishing on one of their boats, came back briefly to grab our hiking gear, then fished a little more before they dropped us off at the Elsworth Rock Garden, then picked us up again and took us to the Locator Lake trail, and then a couple hours later picked us up, have a little more tour of Lake Kabetogama (with lots of information about the more recent history of the area) before returning to the resort. To cap things off they also cooked the fish we caught for our (very delicious) dinner. This was a great experience and over the course of the day talking with Al, Tanner, Brooke as well as Owen it showed their pride and dedication to providing a great experience for their clients. This was one of our best experiences in any of our travels (to national parks or otherwise). On a final note, this would also be a great place for astrophotography. One of my hobbies is astrophotography and although I wasn't able to bring my equipment on this trip, it is in a dark sky location (Bortle 1 or 2) and of course if solar weather is favorable there is a chance to see the northern lights.

We stayed during the in-between season. After summer and before snowmobile season. We needed a place to stay before our boat ride and the Sandy Point Lodge met our needs. It is quite rustic but still has the amenities that a room should have. No meals were served as we stayed on a Tuesday when the kitchen is closed. We saw a gorgeous sunset but forgot to get up to see the sunrise which I understand is equally spectacular. A great place to stay.

We have been going to Sandy Point and Lake Kabetogama for many years. We've been to Sandy Point twice this summer. Once in June and now in July. We are looking forward to going back in August. It is very relaxing and if you have kids, the beach and playground are great for them to play at. We have had Breakfast, lunch and dinner at their restaurant, It was delicious. We would say the cabins are cozy and clean. Sunrise and Sunsets are amazing. It's a place that reminds us to slow down and take in the beauty! Thank you to Tanner, Brooke and Al for a great time! Oh, and we can't forget to mention the fun and conversations with their kids.

This is a nice family run resort. We had a cabin as well as a lodge room for our group. As others have said, the rooms are a bit dated, but where others found that a negative I thought it added to a small family resort charm. The owner and caretaker was great. Our rental pontoon was clean and gassed up when needed. My only complaint was that the young couple running the lodge did not have a posted opening time in the morning. It fluctuated between 730 and 830am. When you want to get grab a coffee or breakfast before hitting the lake, it is nice to know when the office will be open. A small thing. I will recommend and return.

It was wonderful for our Family to stay at Sandy Point!! The owners are a wonderful Family and went way out of their way to make us comfortable. The food is great, the lodge rooms are very well kept, super cozy, and they even hooked us up with a cabin at the end of our stay!!! The cabins are amazing, with a kitchen, cook wear, fully furnished, a fire pit outside, and the views of the lake are wonderful!!! The boat we took out was nice and perfect for our 2 year old daughter!! We had a great time!! Thank you so much!!!

Yelp
Charming Lakeside Lodge run by a very friendly family . There are a few idiosyncrasies to be aware of. There are no coffee makers in the lodge rooms, but you can get coffee down at the restaurant/bar. Also the tap water tastes like sulfur, but you can go to the restaurant and get your water bottle filled. We rented a pontoon boat and really enjoyed our time out of the lake. I highly recommend this lodge for your Voyageurs National Park visit.

Yelp
What a great family run experience. This is just their fourth summer owning and operating Sandy Point Lodge. Tanner, Brooke, and Al were kind and gracious. My sister and I were impressed with our lodge room and we had two fantastic days fishing with Tanner as our guide. (As fishermen of walleye know, fishing is not always the same as catching. Tanner still was able to put us on some walleye even tho the walleye weren't all that interested in biting. We came in with a few when others didn't.) We'll definitely be back.

Yelp
On a recent trip to Voyageurs NP we found the most amazing family-operated lodge. I called and was able to book a lodge room with only a few days notice (granted it was off season). Check in was easy...I love the old school honor system mentality. We kept our room and food on a tab and paid up when we checked out. The bar and grill had great food - we had pizza and burgers. Breakfast was delicious - definitely try the French toast. It felt like home! If you ever get a chance to visit, give Sandy Point a call.

Yelp
Do you like spiderwebs everywhere? How about Granny's old musty furniture from her estate sale? A bed that has the support of a bag of cotton balls? Or towels that have been around since 1989? Well you will find all these luxuries and more at Sandy Point Lodge! Listen, this place might have been the epitome of Lake Chic in the 1950's, but please believe us when we tell you that she has fallen on some hard times. We weren't expecting luxury, but we were expecting customer service. The owner was apparently away during our stay and there were, maybe, two people "running" the place with no help to be found the majority of the time. Everything is decrepit and falling apart--and not in a charming way. We probably wouldn't have even written a review of this place (it's a small business that probably had a hard time during Covid, so far be it for us to diminish their "five star" status), but allow us to regale you with a little tale: Because it was going to be 95+ degrees on the lake on Friday, the operator of our Voyageurs tour company wanted to change our start time from 10 am to 7 am, which meant we'd be done by lunchtime. Responsible nerds that we are, we checked with the guy "in charge" first because at that point, it wouldn't make sense for us to stay the night and we wanted to head back to Minneapolis that afternoon and didn't want to be charged for the extra night. He said "No problem, we won't charge you!" and so we proceeded to confirm with the tour operator. Then, later that day, he ends up telling us that he checked with "the boss" and the boss said no, but at that point we had already changed everything, and booked an extra night in MPLS. We complained, but the boss insisted. Any normal businessperson would have AT LEAST just split the cost since he was at fault for having his employee tell us the wrong information, but NOT THIS GUY!!! So, doing the math, that's $150/night--the most expensive accommodation we had during our 9-day trip in MN--at a COMPLETE DUMP. You have been warned. Stay away from this super dodgy and crumbling business.

Yelp
Sandy Point Lodge is a fantastic resort. My parents and I stayed here in late March while Lake Kabetogama was entirely frozen. Our cabin was wonderfully prepared with comfy beds, a clean bathroom, a full kitchen, a spacious living room, and best of all, we were surrounded by God's great nature. There is not much of a community around so be prepared with food and emergency items. Note: this perspective is only accurate for late winter and early spring. International Falls will be the closest "city" nearby (Virginia is second). Duluth is on the way from Minneapolis. Gordon and Jennifer were lovely hosts, most hospitable, and took care of us well. They even gifted us some wild rice and two of their own walleye filets. I hope to revisit again one day, maybe in the summer when the lake is warmer and alive!

Yelp
I stayed at Sandy Point Lodge on a Thursday and a Friday night. For Thursday, I had brought some leftovers from a dinner I had had the night before. For Friday, I thought I would have dinner at the onsite restaurant. Lo and behold, the restaurant was reserved for a private party and I was turned away at the restaurant. Mind you, I'm ACTUALLY staying at the lodge, in a cabin, but yet, I can't get a table for one at the restaurant. I was told the nearest restaurant was 5 miles down the road. That was exceptionally disappointing. This information was, not provided when I checked in. There were open tables at the restaurant, so it was not like it was completely full. As far as the cabin I stayed it, it was fair. The cabin had settled, so you were walking slanted throughout. Only the heater in the bedroom worked, so at night the living/room kitchen area was a bit chilly. The wifi was pretty slow. There was also a resident dog that barked incessantly, which disturbed the peaceful location. There are many other lodges in the area, I'd pick another one when I come back to this area v

Yelp
The cabins are okay. Mouse poop in the bed, toilet very wobbly and soft spots all over the floor. Decent enough for a fishing trip. The downside is all of the park rangers that this resort has watching guests. Hard to do any fishing when they take up hours of your time trying to write tickets.

Ranee L.

Yelp
The friendliest place we ever stayed! The staff was above and beyond accommodating! The cabin was clean and inviting with a beautiful view of lake kabetogama. HIGHLY recommend staying here by yourself or with your entire family. So much to do either at the resort or out on the lake

Yelp
Great stay at Sandy Point Lodge. The lodge rooms were neat, clean, and well furnished. The staff was wonderful. The food was excellent. This is the best lodge I have ever been to. Gordon and Jennifer run a top notch business and I will be staying there every time we go to Kabetogama (2x a year).

Yelp
Just stopped in for dinner. We were early for the full supper menu. Settled for burgers. The waitress and the menu stated that the fries were the best on the Lake. We went with the fries. The burgers were as close to perfect as you could ask for. Bun was great. Toasted and flavorful. Meat was medium and juicy. The fries? Unbelievable. I don't know what it was about them but they are fantastic. The only weird deal....ice tea refills aren't free and ice teas are pretty small. They told us up front so not a surprise. All in all you couldn't ask for a better burger. The setting of the place is beautiful. Overlooking the lake. Perfect.

Yelp
Beautiful view of Lake Kabetogama and great food. My wife and I both had the walleye which was baked in olive oil. Cooked to prefection!
