The Best Islands in the United States: 2025 Readers’ Choice Awards | Condé Nast Traveler
"A hop off the mainland with not a single stoplight, Sanibel (and its twin Captiva just to the north) punches well above its weight with 15 miles of beach, 25 miles of biking trails, 50 types of fish, and 230 bird species; visit during low tide to collect shells from among the island’s 250-plus varieties." - Caitlin Morton
"Ranked fifth, Sanibel Island was noted for a relatively high average home price ($984,480) and an especially short average commute of 17.6 minutes." - Opheli Garcia Lawler

"An island on the Gulf of Mexico famed for its east–west orientation that makes it a global repository for seashells—a pastime so characteristic it has its own local term for stooping over the sand to collect finds. Large protected areas, including a wildlife refuge, make it a haven for bird-watching, kayaking, fishing, and picnicking. Visitor commerce is small-scale: a few local custard and seafood spots and a summertime farmers market round out the low-key experience." - Anne Olivia Bauso

Lovely island ( although some areas are still showing the devastation of Hurricane Ian.) It has several beautiful beaches goodfor shelling and with parking lots, a very cute shopping center with big parrots in the interior garden, it also has many restaurants and shops, galleries, the Sanibel Arts Center, and a great farmer's market next to it that opens on Sundays from October to late May. Highly recommend!

A second home to us! We love visiting and it was good to be back after Hurricanes Ian and Milton. We tried to come back last year, but our reservation got canceled due not being ready

Soft sand and shelling awaits you at the meeting of sanibel island with the gulf coast waters. Quiet, laid-back and relaxed. These beaches flow at a serene pace. Gulf waters are warm, calm and relaxing. Get some sunshine and steps in along the beach.

Beautiful beach, very laid back town, lots of people riding bikes, the shells are abundant and it depends on the season you find some more rare ones.
The island is still recovering from last year's hurricanes. They're doing a good job rebuilding, and hopefully, in a year or so, everything will be back to normal.
