Yelp
0 star experience - absolutely horrendous and NEVER coming back here again. i strongly encourage everyone else to stay far, far away. you have many way better options in the area that actually deserve your patronage.
i and a few friends were celebrating a friend's birthday at a restaurant in the area, and were planning to surprise her with a cake for dessert. we found sant ambroeus and noticed they had seemingly great options (gelato, cocktails, pastries) and so two of us (non-birthday people) dropped by the shop before dinner to ask if we would be able to pay for a cake in advance and have it ready as a surprise for when we returned afterwards. the staff person said this was doable, noted the approximate time we would be back and our names, and had us pay for the cake. at this point, i would like to note that the cake itself was way more than expected (to give you a sense - one slice of cake here alone is $15. we paid way more than that for everything and also tipped generously on top - i regret all of this so much), but we were hoping it would be worth it, particularly for our awesome friend, and so we paid anyway.
we proceeded to meet up with the birthday girl and had a lovely dinner elsewhere, then returned to sant ambroeus as a group and found a table. we were settling in and trying to stall the birthday girl with the gelato menu when when the same staff member who had completed our transaction earlier awkwardly approached us and said that if we wanted to eat the cake there, we would be charged a $7.50 cake cutting fee *EACH*. ridiculous.
we had already paid an exorbitant amount for what was basically a chocolate cake, but now we were being charged to eat their OWN CAKE. furthermore, the staff member could have easily mentioned this when we first bought the cake itself and expressed that we would be coming back to celebrate and eat it there after dinner. instead, they waited until the birthday girl was sitting right there, thereby completely ruining our surprise, and locking us into the crazy fees to eat their own overpriced food when it was obvious that we couldn't take it elsewhere. an impeccable, extremely customer-friendly business practice. the birthday girl kindly pretended she hadn't picked up on what was going on and ordered some gelato, and then we basically sat around waiting for the cake to come out (it took a while) and ended up finishing all the gelato in the meantime. the bday girl was too full at this point and didn't even get to eat the cake.
we were still trying to make the best of things (and had a great time otherwise, but solely due to the company and not the venue at all) when someone from outside came into the store and started harassing customers to buy slices of overpriced cake for them. this person chased another customer from their table (they legit just got up and left) while the staff did absolutely nothing despite the store being practically empty and very small, thereby definitely being close enough to intervene. this person approached our table next. we just passed through the interaction without thinking too much of it, though this person was overly aggressive and rude (NYC for you - whatever), but the fact that the staff again just stood idly by doing nothing rubbed me the wrong way on top of all these other minuses.
the cake was okay but not worth the crazy price we paid, and you can't even enjoy your food here without getting harassed. the staff are clearly not watching out for their customers and i feel like i was just being taken advantage of, again and again, for my money. this is one of the most horrible experiences i've had at a store in nyc in recent memory and was saved only by the great company and humor of my friends.
again - do NOT come here. go to bambina blue right down the street if you want dessert - amazing ice cream, service, and ambiance; it's superior in every possible way. honestly, you can go to any baskin robbins around the corner or a corner store deli for häagen-dazs and get a much better experience. this place was an absolute disappointment and i'm never recommending sant ambroeus for any occasion, much less what should have been a memorable one.
