Santa Catalina, a Royal Hideaway Hotel (Gran Canaria, Canary Islands) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Since opening its doors in 1890, the luxurious Santa Catalina has been a symbol of refinement in Las Palmas, playing host to the likes of Winston Churchill, Maria Callas, and the Spanish royal family. The oldest hotel in the Canary Islands is still one of the best, and extravagant renovations by the Barceló Hotel Group have put a new shine on the silver and a new polish on the marble. Some things haven’t changed: the hotel’s pale pink façade, a colorful Spanish art collection, a traditional English afternoon tea served in a wood-paneled salon. And while guest rooms and suites retain their compact original dimensions, they’ve been smartly refreshed. Added inducements include an oceanview infinity pool, a stylish rooftop bar, a state-of-the-art spa, and a one-MICHELIN-Star restaurant called Poemas." - Tablet Hotels

Now I’m finally back and right away with a really good feeling. This hotel is often mentioned as one of the few truly top-rated places. Getting a real 4-5-star rating isn’t common, and to be honest, I was a bit doubtful that a hotel in Las Palmas, on a small Canary Island, could live up to that kind of international standard. But they’re really close. Even though our check-in was low-key and anonymous, the service was top-notch from the very start. We were offered help with our bags as soon as we walked in, got a refreshing welcome drink, and were warmly greeted at reception. The hotel has clearly gone through some much-needed renovations over the years – and it shows. A few highlights really stood out: the beautiful pool area, the attentive and friendly service staff, and the overall quality of the food and drinks. Everything felt thoughtful and well-executed. The spa also deserves a special mention – clean, calm, and very professionally run. A perfect place to unwind. This is probably the only truly classy hotel on Gran Canaria – and it shows.

My sister and I came to Gran Canaria for the first time and honestly, we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect experience. From the moment we arrived, we felt completely taken care of. The hotel was stunning, genuinely something out of a dream. What really made it special were the people, every single member of staff was so kind, so warm, and genuinely helpful — nothing was ever too much. Any question we had, any little thing we needed, they were always happy to help. They made us feel seen and well looked after. The little touches were everything — from the chocolates left on our bed (so cute!) to the friendly chats and thoughtful service. There was an amazing perfumery in the hotel, live music, the spa/pools and breakfast was next level. They had little turtles there as well, which made it feel so calm and special. The service, food and overall vibe was immaculate. This wasn’t just a trip — it was an experience we’ll always carry with us. We already know one thing for sure; we’re coming back here, we wouldn’t stay anywhere else. The hotel, the staff, the whole energy — it’s unforgettable. Thank you so much to all the staff for being so beautiful and making our time so special. You really made our trip something we’ll treasure forever - We can’t wait to see you again soon ❤️ With all our love, Shola-Ray & Chanté Kaur

Disappointing Experience I visited the hotel on August 5th, 2025, with my mother, hoping to enjoy a lunch meal at one of the cafe. I had stayed here many years ago and was excited to return, especially because the building and lobby are still incredibly beautiful. The food is still quite good but the service is very slow, we were waiting almost half of hour for a simple order. Unfortunately, the overall experience was far from what I expected from a 5-star hotel. While passing through the lobby, I witnessed two staff members—what seemed to be part of management (a man in a black suit with glasses and a woman in a purple dress)—arguing loudly with upset guests right in front of everyone. Their tone was aggressive and unprofessional, which left a very negative impression. I also spoke to other guests who mentioned that the service quality has declined in recent years, which many attribute to poor management. It’s a shame because the hotel has great potential, but it’s clearly not being lived up to under the current leadership. P.S. I read your AI generated response and do not fully understand what you mean. If I come to hotel to have a lunch, do imply that I am not a guest? What kind of family related you mention? Sorry but I think you are being extremely rude to me and confusing me with someone else

wonderful hotel! It looks very beautiful both outside and inside. The service is top notch. The breakfasts are excellent, very tasty. For the orange juice that is served with water for breakfast, a separate plus. The cleaning of the rooms is very good, everything is very clean. Thanks to all the hotel staff for such a comfortable stay

Just spent three nights here with my family and we had a wonderful stay! Our room was nice and clean, and the staff were incredibly polite and helpful. The breakfast was very good, though do note it's €25 per person. We also enjoyed the beautiful hotel and nice swimming pool. Just remember that extras like the wellbeing center and parking (€20 per day) come at an additional cost. Highly recommend!

I’ve stayed at Santa Catalina twice — the first time was pleasant, but the second was a big disappointment. The front desk is painfully slow, with older staff who keep you standing around and show little sense of urgency. The worst part, though, was after I checked out: I realized I had left my sunglasses and toiletries clearly visible in the bathroom sink. I called the same day, tried 7 times, and was either put on hold forever or dismissed with zero interest in helping. When I resorted to email, I was ignored until I followed up two days later, only to get a generic “sorry, we found nothing.” That’s simply not true — I know exactly where I left them. For a hotel that calls itself 5 stars, the lack of attention, accountability, and basic customer service is unacceptable. I won’t be coming back.

We booked a suite here and were both blown away by how beautiful the hotel is. Everything was so clean and the rooftop swimming pool is a nice touch. Food at the restaurants was excellent too

Beautiful and nice hotel. staff are nice as well. We did not have problem communicating in English with them. There is also a parking at the hotel if you have a rental car. It is limited space but it should be fine depending on the season. We would love to go back there again.

Yelp
Pretty nice hotel in Las Palmas. An old Spanish hotel that proactively lays out tooth-brushes, combs, q-tips, and everything you need when travelling and you don't have your bags with you / are too lazy to unpack. The front patio of the restaurant is very comfortable for some peanuts and a drink.

Yelp
I stayed here on my last holiday. On first impressions, the hotel is beautiful to look at. It looks really grand and 'posh.' I only stayed a couple of days so I spent a lot of my time at the hotel, as it was just a little relaxing break. On my first day I had an amazing breakfast followed by an equally amazing massage! Even though I only stayed a couple of days I had one of the most lovely relaxing breaks ever. My room and the rest of the hotel was lovely and the staff were so attentive and welcoming. Would love to go back.
