Built in the 17th century, the arch was originally constructed so that cloistered nuns from the Santa Catalina convent could pass between buildings without being seen in public. Today, it’s one of Antigua’s most recognizable icons. It’s a symbol of Antigua, perfect for photos, history, and soaking in the city’s colonial charm. It sits on 5a Avenida Norte, the main cobblestone street.
Behind it, you get a perfect view of Volcán de Agua (especially on a clear morning).
The arch has a small clock tower on top, which was added later in the 19th century.
The area around it is filled with colorful colonial buildings, shops, and cafés. Worth a stop whether you’re exploring for a day or staying longer.
