A beautiful Gothic-style church, rich in history and charm. Though reconstructed, it retains its grandeur and architectural elegance. One of its most unique features is the statue of Jesus seated on a chair, which is quite rare and adds a special character to the church. The seven original paintings above the altar are still preserved and add to the spiritual and artistic appeal of the space. It’s easily accessible from the main areas of Fort Kochi and has good parking facilities, making visits convenient. A must-visit for those interested in architecture, history, or a moment of quiet reflection.

Beautiful Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica in Fort Kochi. Free entrance. You can take pictures with your phone but not videos. Most people take their shoes off although there is no such rule. Of course we did the same. It’s one of the eight basilicas in India. during the British invasion in 1795. One of the decorative granite pillars of the destroyed church is preserved as a relic in the basilica. Bishop D. Joao Gomas Ferreira who reached Kochi in 1887 spearheaded an initiative to reconstruct the cathedral. The reconstruction work was a success and in 1905, it was again consecrated by the bishop of Damao, Dom Sebastiao Jose Pereira. It was in 1984 that Pope John Paul II raised the status of the cathedral to that of a basilica.

Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica is a beautiful and old church in Fort Kochi. The place is very peaceful and well maintained. The building looks amazing with its tall towers and colourful interiors. It is easy to find as it’s right in the centre of Fort Kochi. Parking might be a little difficult when it’s crowded. Overall, a calm and holy place worth visiting when you are in Fort Kochi.

The grand, old-world interiors and the mix of Indo-European and Gothic architecture here are really beautiful. It's amazing that this 500-year-old church is still standing so tall and strong! The interiors definitely have that classic Portuguese feel. We visited as they were closing for lunch, so we didn't get as much time as we'd have liked. It's also conveniently located near the Cochin Water Metro, making it easy to get to from the main city.
