This is seriously one of the smallest museums you will ever likely see. Located inside the old lighthouse on West Cliff Drive, the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum shows a slice of the local culture that is justifiably world-renowned, and makes this spot a definite must-see in this town. If you are exploring the other sites, or just out and about walking the cliffs, you will want to make it a point to stop by.
The museum is FREE to enter, though donations are welcomed and appreciated. It is easy to get to, and visible from almost anywhere along the waterfront. Inside is a tiny single room with dozens of surfboards, paraphernalia and info displays for your viewing pleasure. The density of the history crammed in here is certainly impressive. And as an added bonus, you can hang around in the small park outside and watch many surfers in the waves below as they catch the swells at one of the city's most popular surf spots.
Be aware that the space inside is very small, and can get cramped on busy days. Parking is usually pretty easy, with a small lot next to the building, and several others along West Cliff Drive nearby. You can also very easily walk or bike to the spot from downtown, the pier, or the boardwalk, too. The staff are pretty friendly and will have a few other tidbits of info should you ask.
All in all, this is a great tribute to the sport that holds such an esteemed place in the hearts of the locals and fans alike. Definitely make it a point to stop by and see for yourself.
