Santa Maria Island

Santa Maria is a small island, the first of 9 to be discovered. However, it is not for everyone, as it may be limited to some for things to do, tho it has sandy beaches with saltwater pools, great for swimming, surfing and snorkeling, also diving and boat rides and whale watching. Pico Alto is the highest mountain, can go up and see the expanse of the island. There are 2 bays of Sao Lourenço and Maia, which offer spectacular views of the ocean and cliffside summer homes. There are much to do, just depends on what it is you enjoy. Vila do porto is the oldest village which have many cafes, restaurants and small boutique stores. There are diverse kinds of food, of course for those who are vegan or with food allergies, it may be limited, but shouldn't deter anyone from visiting. I was born here, tho grew up in U.S. and live on another Azores island, I am visiting now and saw a negative comment, so I had to add my input. So if the other islands are your thing, good for you! It is still the Azores! And we love all the Azores!!

After a week in the Azores we concluded that sao miguel is the only island worth visiting. We spent an entire day in santa Maria, and to be honest it was a waste of time and money. It was boiling hot in August, and their most popular beach has zero shade, and no facility to rent umbrellas. The roads leading to the beach are very narrow in places. The town centre is boring with nothing to see at all. The only place where we were able to enjoy some delicious drinks is at the only vegan restaurant on the island. The Peanut butter smoothie was yum! The area with the famous Mars-like red sand is a complete scam: it's literally just dirt (the usual vlogger BS). There is nothing to do on the island and nothing stunning to see.

Nice place. Bad food. Good waterfalls. Hood like in brooklyn. Totally recomend

Highly recommend the Costa Norte and Costa Sul walks, especially the Norte.

Went around the island for 5 days. It was great experience.
