Sant'Angelo, Matera (Matera, Basilicata) 3 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"There’s no place quite like Matera, the southern Italian town that’s famous for the dwellings carved into its limestone caves. When the first boutique hotel opened here, it felt like a gesture that could never be repeated, but Matera has caught on among travelers in a big way, and there’s room in this town for a diversity of hotels. This one, Sant’Angelo Luxury Resort, is quite unlike any other; the owners have converted a whole neighborhood into a hotel, including a selection of traditional cave houses as well as a palazzo and a beautifully restored church." - Tablet Hotels

This is a beautiful hotel! Service was excellent. We dined both evenings in the hotel restaurant, which has a terrace with absolutely stunning views. The dinner both nights was divine…Michelin star quality. The service at the restaurant was amazing as well…we watched the talented maitre d’ handle some difficult customer situations with grace and aplomb, very impressive. A must-visit if you are in Matera!

Great hotel. We stayed at the residences. We were upgraded so I can’t really say what the value for money would be if we weren’t, but the room we received was fantastic. Well decorated, recently renovated, great position and view. A cute little house to ourselves. Could not have asked for more. Breakfast had a good selection, of good quality and was placed in a beautiful room. Not quite a criticism, but rather a note for this type of hotel, we did have strangers sitting on our doorstep taking calls, or generally talking at 1am. A little unnerving, but they left after being asked to. It’s not something the hotel can do much about, but it is a consequence of running such a dispersed hotel.

On our recent stay, I have Pros and Cons about my stay. The Location was very nice, with beautiful views of the Rock church, in the square, But there is a whole other area above that has the Main Church, Doumo, so the stairs are unavoidable. Our room was very large, with a balcony that looked over the Rock Church . But the air conditioning was not working properly so the room never really got cooled off to my liking. The staff when asked for recommendation for a Restaurant that served a certain reginal dish , just gave us a list of restaurants in the area. SO that wa a disappointment for sure. The breakfast in the morning was good, but just continental, Eggs and pancakes were at an extra charge. The hotel is kept well, but they really need to fix the air conditioning in the room we stayed in.

This hotel is surely the very best in Matera. Wonderful rooms, especially superior cave suite where we have stayed (for three days). The services were most kind and professional. There is excellent restaurant. Location of the hotel colud hardly be better. Beautiful views from the large terrace. I highly recommend this luxury hotel.

After 4 hours drive reached hotel by 1 pm …room was not ready ..yes no problem we wait for 2 hours ..room was provided at 3pm ..only to discover they r taking us to there sister rooms residence which is far away from main hotel more like an airbnb on road ..on informing them we did not book this and speaking with few ppl and when spoke with thr manager on phone she was extremely rude ..||When told her( slavia room division manager ) it was not a room we booked ..we have our booking details which says its in there 5 star hotel and not 4 star residence and she must do something about it ( i think they just gave our room to someone ) she flatly refused instead of offering any help or even seeing our booking ||Whn we told we will have to complain with agoda where this booking was done she had the audacity to tell us do as u like we will say its a fake review ( that moment we felt we r trapped and i wanted to leave this place ) ||Which luxury hotel treats there guest like this ..we have stayed in many SLH and all have been great experience but this was extremely unwelcoming ||I room our toilet lights were not working so agn time went in maintainance and thy changed eventually to ugly white lights ||Hotel im sure must be lovely but we woukdnt know as they jhavemplaced us in room outside the hotel

Had a great stay in the cave accommodations. Chic and roomy. Parked at a designated garage and the hotel provided transport both for an additional fee. Breakfast was amazing. A great slow start to the day and the town is magical to explore. Only down fall was no early check in during 90+ degree heat but allowed baggage to be stowed

The setting was excellent as was the parking arrangement. We would never stay here again. I carefully studied top end hotels in Matera and selected this one. We've stayed in Small Luxury Hotels affiliated hotels in the past and have always had great stays. This hotel was engaging and responsive before our arrival. The parking solution both seemed good and worked flawlessly. The hotel greeting once we reached the property was good and the room looked nice. It was only in the evening that we realized we had issues. First the room never got cool. Second, we had no hot water in the shower. We called down to the office and after 4 tries finally reached someone. They said it could only be looked at the next day as it was too late. They did come to inspect the issues and take a video. We sweated all night. The next morning a maintenance person did come to the room. The water was marginally made better. The room never got really cool. Ever. And they said that's just how it works. Every other hotel in this trip to Italy has had excellent air conditioning. Some of those hotels were a fraction of the cost of S. Angelo. As for breakfast, it is in a lovely restaurant up the hill from the main street. The restaurant is beautiful. The food is buffet style with only coffee able to be ordered. It's as though the hotel just forgets about the importance of guest engagement. Nobody ever asked how the food was or if we needed anything else. I am just perplexed how this can be such a beautiful place with mediocre service. Hindsight we should have checked out after the first night. Maybe other rooms are great, with no issues. Maybe this type of non-service is what people expect. When we did check out there was no query about our stay. Nobody asked if our issues were resolved. It's as if they don't care. Please consider this and look elsewhere. We will not stay here again.

The hotel enjoys an exceptional location with truly breathtaking views. Our check-in experience was very pleasant, and we appreciated the professionalism of the staff. However, on the day of our arrival, the temperature was 37°C, and we were surprised to find that the room was equipped only with a bathtub and no shower. Moreover, the switch to activate the handheld shower was not functioning, and it took the staff member approximately 15 minutes to adjust it. We were informed that we would need assistance again to switch it back, which was rather inconvenient. Additionally, we were quite disappointed by our experience in the hotel restaurant. When we sat down and asked for the dessert menu, we were told that desserts could not be ordered unless we first ordered main courses. This policy felt unnecessarily restrictive and left us with a negative impression of the service.
