An Unromantic Look at 10 Preserved, Disembodied Hearts

"In 2002, Pope John Paul II gifted use of Santi Vincenzo e Anastasio a Trevi in Rome to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, but 22 hearts of the popes remain in the marble urns. The popes are listed to the left of the altar and their reigns range from Sixtus V in 1583 to Leo XIII in 1903. The custom of separating the organs from the corpse was called praecordia and was done to prevent decay while funeral arrangements were made. There is a large collection of ex voto in this church, most depicting the Sacred Heart. These are small metal ornaments that are left by the faithful as a token of thanks when their prayers are answered. The church faces the more famous Trevi Fountain. As with many churches in Italy, the dress code is strictly enforced. Bare shoulders and knees are prohibited." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

I love this church! The nuns who keep it running her in incredibly kind and playful. They offer a wide selection of Holy cards, Trevi fountain holy water bottles, Jubilee pilgrimage books (2025), and other literature and spiritual materials in a variety of languages for a small donation of any amount. This is a great place to come and step off the busy crowded streets of the Trevi fountain and have a moment of spiritual peace and prayer. If you ever feel overwhelmed by the crowds while visiting the Trevi fountain, be sure to stop in here. And even if you’re not be sure to stop in here anyways!!

I didn't got to explore the church opposite the famous Trevi fountain as it was raining and the church it was full with people taking shelter in there. The church is in Baroque style with a single nave.

It's great to see something else while everyone is focussed on the Fountain of Trevi. This beauty has a better view over the fountain from the upfront stairs. Inside it's calm, and you can find some place to sit and admire the picture and sculpture inside

A beautiful church quietly lurking in the shadow of the Trevi Fountain — quite literally. Just steps away from the fountain madness, most people don’t even notice it. But it has an impressive Baroque façade and a surprisingly rich interior. Bonus weird fact: it houses the preserved hearts of several popes. So if you’re looking for a quick escape from the tourist crush and want to stand at the heart of the Vatican — this little gem is worth a detour. :)

A beautiful small chapel just opposite of the Trevi fountain. Pay a short 5-10 minutes while you are in the area.

From the entrance steps of this beautiful church serenity and chaos exist side by side. Look inside and you will see and hear calm. Turn around and you will see a tide of humanity all jostling for the best selfie spot around Trevi Fountain.

We found this beautiful little church set diagonal from the Trevi Fountain, Saint Vincenzo e Anastasio is draped in History, With its beautiful statues and ceiling paintings it is one not to be missed. There are several stations throughout this little church with patron saints and with a donation of your choice you can either light a candle and say a prayer and take one of the Saint cards to have for your memories. You can also purchase rosary beads at the door being sold by a nun for a couple of euros.

Yelp
We had seen this church several times passing by it during previous trips to Rome. Also like others, it never seemed to be open with the gate surrounding the structure always closed and locked. I'm certain this is to keep the masses that are visiting Trevi Fountain away from the steps and keep the place clean. To our surprise, we were on our way past the Cathedral heading to dinner on January 7th and saw the church gates open. We went in for a visit but could not stay very long as a service had just finished and the place was closing down. The church was completed in 1650 and has quite a history housing 2 previous popes that are entombed there. We were able to get a few photos and had to leave. Sant Vincenzo e Anastasio is a nice church and worth a visit if you find it open.
