"Mount Pellegrino, which towers over the coast between Palermo and the beach of Mondello, is a popular day excursion from Palermo. The panoramic view from the top is breathtaking. And while you're up there you can visit the sanctuary of Santa Rosalia, who is believed to have saved Palermo from a plague in the 1600s. She lived in a cave on the mountain until her death around 1160, and more than four centuries later hunters found remains that were thought to be hers. The plague in Palermo ended, it was believed, because her bones were finally given a proper Christian burial. This shrine was built around her cave to protect the site, and Santa Rosalia was named the patron saint of Palermo."
This proved to be a surprising visit, as I don't think I expected much, but was amazed by how this is built into the rocks and caves. A truly impressive location, and unique experience. If you are nearby, I would definitely recommend visiting.
There is also a small cafe at the bottom of the steps which is a good place to get some refreshments.

Very nice church built into a cave. This is the patron saint of Palermo. She was a Hermit and lived her life out in this cave. Bus 812 goes up from Palermo: check Google maps. There’s a different schedule on holidays and weekends. It’s a very nice ride, there’s the sanctuary a few cafes and shops up there. We were pickpocketed here. Beware not everyone is a saint… enjoy!

The Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia is a church and pilgrimage site located on via Bonnaojust outside of the urban neighborhoods of Palermo, nestled against a stone cliff wall on Mount Pellegrino, which looms to the north of the Sicily city. The views from up there are spectacular.

Beautiful sanctuary of St. Rosalie. Take in the time to read the story outside( with Google translate) and soak in the mistique atmosphere inside. There is no entrance fee.

Beautiful and very cooling church. It is a must see as the interior of the church is extremely unique, given the fact it's built in the mountain.

Beautiful Santuario. Incredible that it’s in a rock with an open roof.
The altar is beautiful.
