5 Best Day Trips from Mexico City | Condé Nast Traveler

"Home to a black Christ, this church is the second most-visited pilgrimage site in Mexico after the Basilica of Guadalupe. A lot of pilgrims come here to see the black Christ, but there's a decent sprinkling of tourists from all over. If you go on a day when there are less visitors (i.e. not the weekend), you'll be able to explore the church more thoroughly." - Susannah Rigg

I have been to many holy sites in the US, Mexico, and Italy and this is a unique place. There’s a sense of excitement, inclusion, and being humbled in this place. Even on a weekday there are a lot of people so bring cash for lunch and vendors, sunscreen, and come with time to spend. I recommend if possible buy items like rosaries prior to entering the church so you can have them on hand when the friars bless the people with holy water. Note that depending on where you park to enter there could be a lot of stairs. Unfortunately the parking offering the shortest walk and least amount of stairs will be closest to the packed busy town. Parking lots are not really marked well so be on the lookout.

One can feel the presence of Tezcatlipoca. It is such a spiritual place

This area gets really packed with people, a lot of vendors. It’s a 20 minute walk from the parking area. 60-100 pesos for parking. The area vendors sell candies, food, anything you can think off. A waterfall is next to the church along with small water parks.

Beautiful, would definitely recommend coming here. The rest of the town is gorgeous too, with great views all around.

Went when I visited Mexico during the Summer. Was a pleasant experience. Love the trinkets that they have around. Bring walking shoes since you'll be doing quite a bit of walking!

experience the popular peregrinate location close to CDMX, if possible avoid the visit on Sundays when really busy, unless you want to live the real experience
