The São Martinho Church in Funchal is a beautiful and serene place of worship that offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city. Nestled in the charming neighborhood of São Martinho, this historic church stands out with its stunning architecture and peaceful surroundings. The church's exterior is a delightful blend of traditional and modern elements, with its whitewashed walls and elegant bell tower. Stepping inside, you are greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere. The interior is adorned with intricate woodwork, beautiful stained glass windows, and detailed religious artwork that captures the essence of Madeira’s rich cultural heritage. One of the highlights of São Martinho Church is its sense of community. The parish is active and welcoming, offering various services and events that cater to both locals and visitors. Whether you attend a mass or simply take a moment to reflect, you’ll feel a deep sense of peace and belonging. The church grounds are well-kept, providing a lovely spot for a quiet stroll or a moment of contemplation. The surrounding area also offers stunning views of Funchal and the Atlantic Ocean, making it a perfect place for some reflection and relaxation. São Martinho Church is a must-visit for anyone exploring Funchal. It’s a place where you can connect with the local culture, appreciate beautiful architecture, and find a moment of serenity. Highly recommended!

Was nice to have a service for my dad on his 1st year anniversary bringing him home and to the place that he was baptised. Beautiful inside I was blown away with all the details inside and out.

We took care to look up the opening hours before visiting BUT the church was CLOSED when we got there (after a long uphill walk) on Saturday 23 March 2024 at 1700! The open hours were shown as 1600 to 2000! A woman came out of a side door at the rear of the church and basically indicated we could not visit and to go away! We walked completely around the outside of the church and could not fing any information at all regarding hours for visitors, nor anything at the entrance to the grounds. Why is it that Catholic Churches are so unwelcoming outside of large cities?

One can understand why and how 'Padre' (Priest) Marcos Goncalves is arguably the best priest in Madeira. He is young, professional, passionate about Christianity and attracts crowds at every mass. His church also has fascinating art. Definitely worth a visit. Well done!!
