"Though perhaps less famous than Oxford, Heidelberg, or Bologna, the Portuguese university town of Coimbra is cut from the same cloth. It’s no exaggeration to say it’s the intellectual capital of the Portuguese-speaking world, and it should come as no surprise that Sapientia, its most stylish boutique hotel, is no neon-lit dance club but rather a thoughtful, quiet, refined sort of place." - Tablet Hotels
We really enjoyed staying at the Sapientia Boutique Hotel. The rooms were comfortable and the outside patios were well set up… beautiful views from the rooftop patio. We had dinner there twice and the food was delicious. The staff was very accommodating!

Perfect choice for our one night visit to Coimbra. Beautiful hotel with comfortable room and attentive service. Many special touches such as welcome drink, afternoon wine, candy at bedtime, and amazing breakfast. We loved the location by the university, and did not mind at all the walk to or from the town. We do not hesitate to recommend!

The hotel is in a great location, unfortunately reception staff (in the afternoon as we checked in) was pretty unhelpful in most matters.
Our room was a “loft room” - you had to climb on a couch to just about reach the windows, the air conditioning didn’t work, we had to walk up two flights of stairs with our luggage at checkout.

It's a nice little boutique hotel, with a small restaurant and a general cozy feel to it.
I liked the room and its cleanliness.
I had asked for gluten-free breakfast at the time of booking (3 days ahead) and mentioned it again upon check-in.
Unfortunately, they only had a a couple of breads and then said the gluten-free options had finished.
That's not a nice thing to happen, when you explicitly advised ahead of time.
The very reason the place only received a 3-star rating from me.

Sapientia is a beautiful hotel in the city centre.|We were warmly welcomed by Margarida, Niria and Aniso, Nuno and Síria on breakfast , Joel on dinner.||The rooms are very comfortable and the breakfast is great. It's lovely to sit outside under the tree. We also had dinner on our last evening which was delicious.||The rooftop terrace is great for the sunset. |Recommended for your stay!

We spent one night in this hotel and everything was magical. From the historical building to the refined decoration through the attentive, welcoming and helpful staff, everything is designed to make your stay unforgettable.|Special kudos to the restaurant of the hotel where we had an amazing alfresco dinner with local delicacies and an entertaining staff. We will definitely come back.

This hotel is not a 4 star hotel. I would describe it as a 3 star. It was difficult dragging our luggage down a rocky pathway as the pathway was not smooth. No one offered to help us from the hotel. The bed/mattress was hard as a stone. Each day ( thankfully we only stayed 2 nights) we woke up with back and neck pain. They need to update the mattresses. We were very disappointed with the breakfast. We would have like to have seen a different variety each day but instead it was the same. Pretty much just scrambled eggs ( for hot food) and there was no meat choices of bacon or sausage. Not much of a breakfast. We did not eat anything else at the hotel as we were not interested in the food choices. When we checked out we asked the young man who was working to have the manager contact us so we could discuss our sub par stay. No one ever contacted us. On a positive note, the hotel was in a great location. We were right behind the Coimbra University. If I ever visited Coimbra again, I would not stay at this hotel.

This was our second time staying here. We chose a larger room overlooking the patio this time. Hotel is clean, staff is friendly, breakfast is excellent. (You need to add breakfast, there’s no where close to eat) We enjoyed the roof top bar with our complimentary happy hour wine. This is our go to in Coimbra..
