Tracing the source: Mumbai's growing eco-conscious seafood scene - SilverKris

"One of the principal sourcing points for the city’s seafood trade, supplied heavily by large trawlers; buyers focusing on low price and large sizes at these docks have contributed to widespread bottom-trawling practices and the rapid depletion of local fish stocks." - Jasreen Mayal Khanna

A Wonderful place to visit in South Bombay and One time experience of visiting one of the largest fishing market in Mumbai. Beautiful street Art fishing boats are the main attraction of the place

If you're up for exploring the place and have some pics then you'll find this place boring. I visited in morning 7am and nothing was there which could make me feel lively there. You can definitely get some good fresh seafood. This place stinks so bad and quite unhygienic.

(9-7-2022) Sassoon Docks, built in 1875, is one of the oldest docks in Mumbai and was the first wet dock constructed in Bombay. It is one of the few docks in the city open to the public. It is situated in Mumbai harbour in South Mumbai area of Colaba.

Sassoon Dock is one of Mumbai’s oldest and most historic docks, located in Colaba. Built in the late 19th century, it remains a vibrant hub for the city’s fishing community and offers a raw, authentic glimpse into Mumbai’s coastal life. Early mornings here are especially lively, with fishermen unloading their catch, traders negotiating, and the entire dock buzzing with activity. The area also has a strong art and cultural presence, thanks to the Sassoon Dock Art Project and colorful murals that add a creative touch to this working dock. The blend of tradition and modern street art makes it a unique spot for photography and exploration. While the area can be crowded and has a strong fish aroma, it’s cleanly maintained for a functional dock and safe to visit during the day. Overall, Sassoon Dock captures the true spirit of Mumbai — hardworking, diverse, and full of life. A must-visit for photographers, culture lovers, and anyone who wants to see the city beyond its skyline.

The fish market is located at the Sasson Pier. The pier is named after the Jewish merchant and philanthropist David Sasson, who also built a large library, a synagogue, and more. The fish market is very busy, it is very difficult to walk on the pier due to the crowding. The fishermen bring their fish to the pier and merchants of all kinds buy and sell the fish. The hustle and bustle is very big. Very colorful and interesting. We arrived before six in the morning.

Worth visitng as long as you can stomach the stench of fish that was so strong it stays in your clothes. Came before sunrise to photograph and for that, it over delivers. Having witnessed the morning I was not motivated to eat any fish whilst in Mumbai.

It is a great place to get lost in Indian fishing culture; we loved the authenticity we found there. A must-visit during your Mumbai stay if you have a chance to get a local guide to walk you around and tell you the history; you'll reward yourself with a much better experience. The whole area gives you a taste of Indian heritage
