Saucy Dogs

I travel to Hilo often for work and Saucy Dogs is always one of my first stops. This small, locally owned business has many different hot dog creations to choose from. My go to is their Chicago dog or the kalua dog with the Hawaiian or Portuguese dog, but you can't go wrong with any of their creations. The price is very reasonable and they do not skimp on the portions. The staff is always super friendly and welcoming. At first glance, the menu can be overwhelming with so many different hot dogs and toppings to choose from, but the cashier was more than happy to walk me through it and give some recommendations. There are a few tables and chairs outside, but seating is very limited. This does not bother me considering how great the food and service is. Definitely give this place a try if you are in the area.

We saw a video made by a recent patron, on Tik Tok! Decided to take a chance and we were not disappointed!!! The girl that helped us, and her Auntie cooking up behind the wall, were over the top nice. Hot Dogs were DELICIOUS. An amazing amount of choices in types and toppings! Few tables outside to sit, or you can get to take out :) definitely give Saucy Dogs a try!

i had the mac attack hot dog, and it was delicious! the service was friendly, and the food came out really quickly. also, great bang for your buck, as you get chips with your dog and its very affordable.

First time at Saucy Dogs and it really satisfied our hot dog cravings. Our family of 5 had the Mac Attack, lava Dog, hot dog and a bowl of rice/chili. Friendly staff. We would go back again to try different style hot dogs and sausage.

Food was very tasty: I had the Aloha Dog, wife had mac-n-cheese; MIL had nacho dog. Only two tiny tables outside: this is a take-away joint... but that was a dog worth traveling for!

The hot dogs were incredible! Even the Carrot Dog, which I was skeptical about, was surprisingly delicious. I got a Hawaiian Dog with the Lava Dog toppings. It was definitely spicy, but sooo delicious. I paired it with the salt & vinegar potato chips, working as palate tamer for the jalapeños & spicy mayo. The Pepper Jack cheese melted on top helped to hold the smaller ingredients in place. The fam got others that weren’t spicy, and they were just as good. To top it all off, the service we received was phenomenal! While I never got her name, the woman at the counter was helpful, patient, and kind with an incredible smile. If you’re on the big island & love hot dogs, make the trip to Saucy Dogs. It is worth it!

The girl behind the counter was so incredibly nice. The hot dogs were amazing. The bread was fresh and so soft. Super yummy, quick, and a cheaper option for Hawaii. They only have 2 small tables outside but you can take it to go.

Great hot dogs and reasonable prices. A local man recommended this restaurant and it did not disappoint. If you’re in the mood for a hot dog this is your place! We had the aloha dog and the Kalua pork dog. Please note there only a couple tables to eat at outside.

Heavenly! You have to stop by Hilo to get a saucy dog! The chicken sausage was out of the world, paired with the chili dog topping, my tastebuds were dancing! Their chili is another level! That on its own it's out of sight! Saucy dog is a must!

Continues to be one of my favorite places to grab a really great hotdog. Came here with a friend and he ordered the Chicago dog and I had my usual chili cheese, dog with tomatoes and sour cream. A couple tourists walked by and saw the hotdogs and went in and ordered their own lunch because they thought they look so good. They were very happy they stopped.

This place is awesome, 4.7 on Yelp usually doesn't steer you wrong. This place earns the 5 stars. Options: I have a vegetarian, two different kinds of picky kids, and I like different stuff with lots of flavor. This place checks all boxes. Food: Aife liked veggie dogs, son loved the straight up regular dog. Daughter had the Keiki size red dog and devoured it. I went with the Hawaiian red hot dog with "Aloha topping" and it was the best hot dog i've ever had. Service was great; seemed like two women working a lunchtime on a Tuesday. They were fast, polite, and exceptionally nice. Great place, no doubt 5 stars.

I love Saucy Dogs! During my recent visit, I opted for their lava dog with jalapenos on the side, and it was a scrumptious! The softness of the bread was simply delightful, perfectly complemented by just the right amount of sweetness. As for the hot dog itself, it was delicious, and the lava dog offered an ideal balance of spice and flavor. One of the charms of Saucy Dogs is its quaint location, situated conveniently just off the main road. Though they lack indoor seating, the cozy ambiance adds to the overall charm of the place, making it an excellent spot for a quick and satisfying meal. The friendly staff was an added bonus! If you're a hot dog enthusiast or simply looking for a tasty and unique treat, I highly recommend Saucy Dogs. I'm already looking forward to my next visit!

So, my wife and I happened to find this restaurant on accident while exploring Hilo town. We had just left the farmers market and saucy dogs was just a short walk away. Let me preface my review by saying, I love hot dogs. That being said, saucy dogs is on a whole other level. I got the kalua dog, and it was amazing. I subbed in a polish sausage for mine. I loved that you could customize your dog. The flavor was phenomenal. The BBQ sauce was sweet and tangy and the garlic aioli was a great undertone, mixing with the tender kalua pork. I highly recommend this spot. There were a lot of different options!

It was so ono that we dug in before getting photos! My husband had the chili bowl --really really good homemade chili. And highly recommend the house made Kalua pork! Great locally owned and sourced housemade food!

Delicious!! Best hot dog I've had in a long time. Lots of options too. and the dogs are loaded with goodness! Service was very nice. There's not seating inside but that didn't bother us - we took ours to go and ate outside. Definitely recommend.

These are the 10" dogs. The food was very good, came with chips and a drink. Very limited seating but good for a quick bite

Excellent food. A must go in Hilo. We eat here often and love it every time. Their selection of dog choices makes it a new experience every time.

I love good hotdogs and was looking forward to trying Saucy Dogs because my son raved about them. So on a hot Saturday afternoon we were in the area so we stopped by. It is a cute little place that would be easy to miss. We love doing business with these small shops and restaurants in Hilo because it's like everyones small home town. My wife wasn't as hungry as I was so she ordered a kid's hotdog, which was of course plain with no frills except for mustard. I love Chicago dogs so that is what I ordered with my choice of a polish sausage in it. What I got was not a Chicago dog. It didn't have the bright green relish, the pickles were slices instead of a spear, the tomatoes were diced fine instead of wedges and the chili peppers were not the sport peppers usually put on Chicago dogs. The saving grace was that the bun was so soft and delicious. The hotdog was actually pretty good and I may stop by again and try another type of hotdog next time.

Pleasantly surprised as I don't care for hot dogs but I was starving and couldn't think straight already, lol. Went with a beef Kalua dog and the garlic aioli on the side. It was a nice mix of flavors as I took the dog and dipped it in the garlic aioli. It was good alone but the aioli made a nice dipping sauce to meld it all together. I do wish there were seating; ample seating, preferably not in the sun (or rain -no covered area to sit) otherwise I would've loved to give full stars. There was a bistro set out on the sidewalk but other than that, nothing. I ended up just walking back to my vehicle to eat in comfort and peace There were many different dogs and toppings to choose from. Check um out!

Amazing hospitality and friendly service. Our clan of six ordered from here and another local shop. Saucy Dogs kept my wife and 10 year old happy. Graciously allowing us to all eat together.

Quick service and great options. Food was great, especially the Chicago and Buffalo Dog. The only downside was only a few chairs outside on the street. No real seating.

Food was okay the service was good the hotdog was fine Great toppings The Kalua nachos I ordered plate was super light for what I paid barley even ate it was more chips then anything. But kool hope I'm the wall place check it out if your on hilo.

Service was quick !! My dad ordered the Big Braddah from their menu & it fed 4 of us. Eating area was right outside the small shop. Definitely coming back here

This small hot dog shop in downtown Hilo offers an innovative menu of topping combinations that can be paired with your choice of sausage. It's Hawaii -- so we had to try the Aloha and Kalua dogs, both of which were delicious! Not only does the food taste great, but it's a good value at $8.50 a hot dog, which also includes a bag of chips. Service was fast and friendly. Only a couple seats outside, but you can alternatively get your food to go and enjoy across the street at Mo'oheau Park.

The Aloha Dog is an explosion of Hawaiian flavor - mixing jalapeños and pineapple, embedded in a warmed Hawaiian sweet bun. For veggie lovers, they have three options - the veggie dog, the Italian veggie dog, and the carrot nawt. They also respectfully ask if you require gluten free products and if the bacon bits should be left behind! Mindful service.

Great hotdogs! Has a ton of options for everyone's taste! Staff is also very fun & friendly! 10/10 would recommend!

FOOD: Obviously, from my 5-star review, I am a huge fan. My husband and I stumbled upon Saucy Dogs about a year ago when we were waiting for an appointment in the area. We shared a lava dog (with the spicy link) and loved it so much, that we went back the next day for a lava dog each. While planning our next trip home (I live on a different island now), we added Saucy Dogs to our MUST-DO list! As a creature of habit, I got the Lava Dog - this time with a Nathan's All Beef Dog - and my husband got the Spicy Delight with the spicy link. I 100% still would get it again!! The buns they use are not like a generic bun from some restaurant wholesale store, they're soft and delicious! While I am a fan of the Lava Dog, I would definitely get the Spicy Delight next time since I have been loving the spice lately. All dogs come with a bag of chips for like $8/$9ish bucks. For me, totally worth it. ATMOSPHERE: The epitome of a hole-in-the-wall. This restaurant is located in downtown Hilo and has very limited seating. There are two 2-top tables and a small bench outside on the street (which is a little grungy, in my opinion). Zero seating inside, and honestly, space for three to four people at max inside. Definitely a grab and eat on the go, or for a quick snack that you scarf down outside. SERVICE: We have never had any issues with service! The girls have always been super nice to us, friendly, and helpful. OVERALL: I will always go back to Saucy Dogs! Can't wait for our next trip home to go back.

Been wanting to try this place out for a year now and whenever it's brought up, my friends would ask why we'd get a hot dog for lunch LOL. but finally lured one friend to try it with me hehe. It's located in a one-way street alley, Furneaux Lane, in between Pho 99 and a juice bar. It's literally located behind the Downtown KTA. There's ample parking around the area (lot and street parking). However, it may be a little more difficult to find a spot during the lunch and dinner rush hours. I got the lava dog with da Hawaiian red dog and added garlic aioli (unlimited toppings)! It came with jalapenos, onions, spicy aioli (not spicy at all), and melted pepper jack cheese. The presentation of my hot dog was beautiful! Simple but beautiful. The addition of garlic aioli helped enhance the flavor of what I also had. I actually didn't realize da Hawaiian red dog was the really pink ones until I got my order (smh). And I also felt like I should have customized my hot dog with the unlimited toppings provided especially for the price paid (dang it) . But nevertheless, I really enjoyed my meal! My friend got their chili dog with the all beef dog. I was able to split half-half with him and try his. It wasn't too different from other chili dogs that I've had before. The service here is amazing too! Shoutout to the worker who helped us out by answering questions and also giving a ton of recommendations. Definitely recommend this place if you're in the area and wanting a snack. The price here is a bit on the higher side as you may not be full. Regardless, delicious!

I had the Lava Dog, my wife had a chili dog. They were pretty good, as you can tell from the photo of me stuffing my face. This place it's on a side street and is pretty much takeout only at the moment. We were lucky enough to get the line table outside the restaurant. The staff member taking our orders was beyond helpful, explaining what all their different dog choices were. She made us feel welcome and seemed genuinely happy to help a couple of mainlanders out.

Kalua Dog was amazing and filling! Even better with the side of aioli (comes on it originally). Staff was super friendly and quick to serve.

Fantastic service, and pleasant staff. This little shop wasn't somewhere we were specifically looking to try, but we found it while walking around. The prices are fair, and portions are a good size. I got the Aloha dog, Hawaiian frank, and the Kalua pork dog. Id recommend the heck out of them both. My mom is a vegan, and got the Naut-dog, which is a cooked carrot hotdog. It was also very good, almost as good as the standard fare!

Ok... so I'm not much of a "let's for get a hotdog" sort of dude. $1.62 is what I usually pay and it's at Costco (+ tax in Los Angeles)... But I'm also a foodie and do enjoy a good hot dog at random places I've tried them, but I've never ensured it's a place I go back to. Saucy Dogs is a damn gem. Best hot dogs I've ever had. There. I said it. And the staff is cool too! They're worth a visit when in Hilo side of The Big Island!

I ate at Porky's Kauai (Yelp #13 in the US) and this is better. You select your topping and dog varietal off the board. I ordered a kailua pork dog. The pork was juicy and tender. The volcano sauce on top was uniquely seasoned and just spicy enough to cut through all the fattiness. The dog itself was a juicy and tender and came on a sweet, doughy, chewy bun. The portion is massive. This was my favorite of three "top" hot dog restaurants I visited in the state.

Love this place! Friendly service, great choices and soooo yummy! I go to the big island several times a year and make sure to make it to saucy dogs.

Unfortunately this place did not live up to expectations after reading some of the recent 5 star reviews. The mother-daughter team was relatively friendly, the menu was drool-worthy and difficult to choose from and the place was clean. However the food wasn't anything to write home about. Husband got a chicken sausage topped with Kayla pork and bbq sauce. I am gluten free so got the chili dog minus bun and added Fritos. It was tasty, but I would go back (2 stars per my rating system.)

Oh my GOSH! This place is soooo good!!! My husband and I came to get a custom polish sausage and I got the polish aloha. They were so good we had to get a second one to share!! The third dog was the best - 10" Portuguese dog with ketchup, yellow mustard, shredded cheddar, jalapeños, bacon bits and olives. The lady serving us was also very nice, upbeat and just provided amazing service! Would definitely recommend!

AWESOME! The two employees (owners) were some of the nicest people on the island. Being from Chicago I've had way too many hot dogs in my day. Their dogs were huge and super original flavors. The bacon blue cheese dog was superb. I never thought hot dogs would be one of my more memorable meals on our two week vacation.

Have you seen these hot dogs?! They are so delicious, inventive, and perfect for instagram. This fulfilled all my fat girl dreams. I was dead set on the bacon mac n cheese covered hot dog. I think I burned my tongue at least 3 times because I just couldn't wait to dig in. And by dig in, just know you will be eating this with a knife and fork. I don't think it's possible to pick this up and eat it with your hands. My only complaint would be the lack of air conditioning in the small restaurant, I was working up a sweat with this thing. My husband ordered the dog topped with bbq pork, pineapple, cheddar, and bacon. His was almost as good as mine but I definitely won the best order.

Ordered a Nathan's hot dog topped with kalua pork and it was delicious. A large portion in a sweet bun that comes with a bag of chips. Friendly customer service. It is mostly a to-go place with one two person table outside. The area around can be sketchy since it is a slowly gentrifying area. Lots of homeless people amongst high end boutique chocolate shops, yoga studios, and art galleries. Definitely a unique experience.

This was tasty. We were walking looking for food and stumbled upon Saucy Dogs! I had the lava dog which had jalapeños on it. You can customize the type of hotdog as well as the toppings! I'd definitely get an extra side of mustard/sauce to go on it.

Super fast and amazing service, great for lunch on the go! You get complimentary chips and customization with sauces and toppings, bomb food, would come again :)

I ... love ... hotdogs. You can give them to me with anything on them and I'll still eat it! I don't care who you are .. but once you smell hot dogs on the grill your mouth just waters! And if it doesn't .. what kind of monster are you??!! In our quest to find some thing to eat for lunch we stumbled upon this priceless gem. Me thinking that they just opened the place not too long ago, was shocked that they have been open for a couple years now 0.o Yeah ... I looked them up on Yelp AFTER I ordered!! Lol!! Why did we not find this place last year???? In all fairness, when we first passed it, we didn't know if that would actually tide us over. So I grabbed a menu and we continued to wander around town. We eventually ended up back at Saucy Dogs with absolutely no regrets! Can I just tell you how awesome everyone is there?! They remembered us when I grabbed a menu earlier that day. Everyone was so helpful and so very friendly. I think they were the owners .. not sure. But I loved talking story with them! They have an easy to read menu. You chose a sausage and pick which topping you want. You can either pick from pre-made menu toppers or make your own. It comes with your choice of chips, and they also have two different types of nachos and floats! I decided on the lava dog with a beef polish sausage and my mini me had the mac attack with da hawaiian sausage. Omgeeee!!!! Yes, yes .. your saying .. come on, it's JUST hotdogs. Please excuse yourself right now!! These were AMAZEBALLS!!!! AMAZING!!!! My daughter, a great lover of mac and cheese, gave it a thumbs up and ten million stars. We enjoyed them so much, that we came back the next day!! I got the same thing, the lava dog .. my daughter tried the nacho cheese dog. She loved this one even more. This place is a hole in the wall .. around the corner from Sugar Coast Candy. I suggest that you give them a try when your in Hilo. I will see you folks next year!!!!! :DD

If I could give zero stars I would. This place has the worst customer service! They don't list all the ingredients on their menu so watch out if you've got any dietary restrictions. They charge extra for to go plates and bags. They would probably charge extra for buns if they could get away with it. That being said, they put something on my hot dog that I couldn't eat and they wouldn't make another one. When I asked forcefully they ended up making another but I found a very long hair in it that I'm sure was meant for me. Just a terrible experience. Skip this place.

This cute little hot dog shop is located in down town Hilo. Prior to heading out to the falls and the volcanoes national park we went tl get some mochis and since we had to wait like 35 mins for our mochos to be ready we called the hot dog place placed an ordered over the phone, the process was fast and the person who took the order was super friendly. You can pick from different types of sausage for your hot dog including vegetarian and they have different types to satisfy any particular craving. You can also order of DoorDash as well.. we ordered a Mac Attack with all beef which are Nathan's brand, it came with plenty of Mac and cheese and crumbled bacon making the contrast between the creaminess of the Mac and cheese and saltiness and crunchiness of the bacon wonderful. The kalua dog comes with juicy and tender kalua pig over the sausage and it was a hit as well as the pineapple dog which we had it with a chicken sausage and enjoyed the sweetness the pineapple. All hotdogs come with a bag of chips and hotdog shaped gummies, we accompanied our hotdogs with a vanilla ice cream root beer float and two diet Cokes.

Saucy dogs is on fire This place is a must try if you are into amazing food combos. Two words: "Mac attack". This is one of my favorites. It's a hot dog topped with a generous mounds of Mac and cheese, sprinkled with bits of savory bacon. Another must try is the spicy buffalo dog. It's a hot dog drizzled with a duo of buffalo sauce & blue cheese dressing, topped by blue cheese crumbles & bacon with the surprising twist of crunchy celery! I've also tried the Chicago dog which is a perfect go to if you're not ready to go so intense. Hotdogs range from $5-$7 and comes with crunch potato chips. Service here is fast and friendly. Bonus! They offer a reward program where you can get free upgrades with the more points you gain. You can also download the app "five stars" where you can track their rewards.

BEST and NICEST cashier EVER! Helped me get a hotdog taste just right!! And it tasted EXCELLENT!!!! 10/10 would eat again!

Service was spectacular. Food was delicious. Worth the trip. We got the lava, the mac&cheese, and the kalua. The lava had the right amount of spice. The chicken complimented the Mac and cheese. The kalua dog went great with a Portuguese sausage. All in all the service and the food made the whole experience amazing. It's rare to get that kind of service anymore, and this place still has it!

Extremely good veggie dogs (and I eat meat ones too) a must try in Hilo. It is a small place so would need to order to go.

Cute little hole-in-the-wall location. I ordered a polish dog with kalua pork and a macho nacho. They both tasted excellent! Prices are a tad high, especially for hot dogs, but they are super tasty, so you get what you pay for...in a good sense. You got to at least try it out! Super friendly service!
