Savitsky Nukus Museum of Art

If you’re visiting Nukus, you’re likely there to see the Savitsky Art Museum, or to see what’s left of the Aral Sea. And the Savitsky is spectacular, but I’m not sure it’s worth the journey to Karakalpakstan / Western Uzbekistan for. The museum has three floors, each predominantly filled with painting, and a few other modalities of art, my favorites being the wooden sculptures. The art itself, sourced from across Central Asia, is stunning, but there’s a bit less of it than I expected.

Savitsky Nukus Museum was a lovely surprised. It is famous for housing the world's second-largest collection of Russian avant-garde art, as well as extensive collections of Karakalpak folk art, antiquities, and Uzbek art. If you appreciate art, this a place to visit !

The collections are very well organized in a very well maintained museum. It was a surprising discovery in Nukus. Stavitsky is a hero for the Russian and Soviet art. Only a small portion of the 100,000 artifacts he gathered are displayed to the public. Visit could be done in an hour.

The Savitsky Art Museum in Nukus absolutely exceeded my expectations. The collection is incredible — thousands of unique paintings, sculptures, and artifacts that tell the story of Central Asian and Russian avant-garde art. The building is modern, well organized, and the staff are friendly and helpful. It’s amazing to see such a world-class museum in this remote corner of Uzbekistan. A must-visit place for anyone coming to Nukus!

The one thing people come to Nukus for. This museum has a very big collection of art from the region, most of it being oil on canvas, which is one of my favourite ways of painting. The museum is nicely structured and there is enough to see for a few hours. I'd recommend going here as part of a tour from Xiva, as I dont think it's worth staying in Nukus for a night to see this museum. Nonetheless, it's definitely worth visiting!

What a true gem of a museum. Absolute fantastic. The two current exhibitions are wonderfully curated and a feast for the eyes and mind. This has been my favorite museum in all of Central Asia. The whole reason I traveled to Nukus was to visit Savitsky and it did not disappoint.

Well organized exhibition with extraordinary masterpieces...definitely a must see in Nukus! Perfect guided tour in English available.
