Saxman Totem Park

We visited the park as part of a tour scheduled via the cruise ship. Very interesting place with lot's of history. We learned how the master carver would tell his story via the artwork on the totem pole. Also saw the wood shop where a new pole was being carved. Very spiritual experience.

We took the silver line bus to get to the park. The bus requires exact change, $2. It was a small park but very easy to get to and it is nice. BTW, the stop for the return bus back to town is not where you get off but up the road next to the park's gift shop!

Love the history and dances of this totem pole Park! The forest hikes were phenomenal. If you like the above type of excursions, I can highly recommend this one!

Very interesting site but it rained like crazy while there. Our guide wasn’t as informative so that didn’t help. Would’ve liked a better experience

A wonderful show of the native tribes in Saxman, AK. Very interesting display of their dances. And a great place to learn about totem pole carving by master totem pole artists!

A bit run down. Numerous missing signs that would inform history and context. On the whole very cool and with much potential. Needs someone who can generate some basic grant money to do some needed maintenance. Culture and history are beautiful. Want to see them shared.

The totems were amazing and our guide knew everything asked! Was disappointed in the dancing as it looked like it was put on by my nieces 1st grade class. The costumes were blankets over jeans and t-shirts and some of the performers were just kids playing instead of dancing. Then the carvers, which is 1/3rd of the excursion, were on break. Without our guide being so knowledgeable this would've gotten a 1 star.

I’ve been to many native and First Nations longhouses, dance performance’s, and carving studios. The collection of standing polls, carving studio, and the second largest longhouse I’ve been in is definitely worth the trip and seeing. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. I’ve known about Nathan Jackson’s work and it was great to meet him and see him passing on his craft to the next generation of carvers. Highly recommend if you’re in Alaska. Fly out or catch a boat.
