Inside Singapore's last Taoist deity shop - SilverKris
"The last Taoist deity shop in Singapore has crafted hand-carved religious effigies for 121 years, continuing a family trade that its ancestors trace back to the 1300s in southern China. Founded in Singapore by two brothers who arrived in 1896, the workshop has been tended through generations and was long worked in daily by an 86-year-old matriarch who married into the family in 1949. Each effigy, which starts from about SG$300, is carved from camphor wood, shaped to the purchaser’s specifications, patched with plaster to smooth cracks, then finely painted and sometimes embroidered with narrow-thread motifs such as dragons, clouds, peony flowers and water spirals. A distinctive finishing practice is how the eyes are painted—looking upward if destined for a temple so it can meet devotees at the back, or downwards for a home where worshippers are closer—and auspicious delivery dates are chosen from a Taoist almanac. The business is now run by the eldest son, with the grandson helping part-time and leading twice-monthly workshops (bookable through Airbnb Experiences) that give visitors hands-on insight into the traditional craft and its cultural significance." - Ronan O'Connell
Attended the Between Two Worlds tour and had an enjoyable time. I learned a lot from our guide, Jamie, who was excellent and very knowledgeable. Lots of interesting anecdotes regarding the religious practices of our locals. Hopefully there will be more of such similar tours in the near future to support and preserve our heritage.

We had a great experience visiting Say Tian Hng heritage workshop! The tour was fun; we learned a lot, not only about taoism in Singapore, but also about the craft of sculpting these wonderful pieces of art. I hope this family business stays around for many more generations!

A very well researched and clearly passionate view into living history and culture. Thoroughly recommended.
Make sure you have eaten and bring water!

Took the walking tour “Between Two Worlds” last 16 February with my mom. It was such a great experience. You not only see a different side of Singapore but see history with every step and learn how gods and spirits play a critical role even if you can’t see it.

I’ve been a big fan of Tian Hng Buddha Shop for the longest time — their work is incredible, and I’ve had my eye on the place for quite a while. Finally found the time to visit, and I’m so glad I did. Had such a meaningful conversation with Uncle and was really heartened to see Ah Ma too. Such a special place, full of heart and history.

Joined the tour ‘Beyond two worlds’ recently. As someone who is clueless about deities and their contributions to our culture, this was really eye opening and allowed me to see the city in a different way! Would recommend :)

Attended the street shrines walking tour "Between Two Worlds". Our docent Jamie was a very knowledgeable and engaging guide! As someone with only a superficial knowledge of Chinese folk religions it taught me a lot, and now I'm inclined to take note of these small divine spaces if I spot any while out and about.
Also, the organizers were accommodating of our group and arranged the tour's timeslot at our convenience, which we were very grateful for.
