12 Best Museums in Atlanta

"If you want to see tightly curated fashion collections with a sharp, incisive point of view and watch films that will spark discussion afterward, this Midtown museum is a must-visit. Because of the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD)'s deep and wide relationships with designers and content producers, the museum has access to truly special, dynamic temporary exhibitions, often focusing on the future of fashion with a look toward what’s historical and current." - Jennifer Bradley Franklin

We visited the Sandy Powell exhibit and it was wonderful! Amazing to see such exquisite costumes from a variety of films! It was a personal dream come true to see the costumes from the live action Cinderella. Thank you to SCAD for reaching out and working with Ms. Powell to bring this incredible collection to Atlanta! Thank you also to all of the students/staff! Everyone was so warm and welcoming and added to the great experience!

$10 full priced entry. Free 90min parking is at the top of the SCAD garage which opens out into a deck that overlooks 75/85 through town. Stairs/elevator take you up to the museum. December 2024 exhibits are film costume and African fusion right now, they cycle about every three months.

Yelp
Great visit to SCAD FASH museum. This is a fantastic place to visit when in Atlanta and is always a feast for the eyes and heart. Interesting, stimulating and thought-provoking displays. The exhibitions change regularly so you will need to check before you visit. When I visited the museum, they had "Entering Modernity: 1920s Fashion from the Parodi Costume Collection" and a Manish Arora exhibit. The 1920's fashion exhibition was very powerful and familiar from many costume dramas of that period. This was a time of excitement and expansion of ideas post WW1 and the fashions show that. I really liked the exhibition. In addition, there was the Manish Arora exhibit which was a riot of color and ideas born out of India. Manish has designed fashions for many celebrities like Kate Moss, Lady Gaga. The pieces embrace a spectrum of colors, materials, crystals, sequins, images (Indian magazine covers) and themes (circus) - so stimulating. I visit regularly and always enjoy the experience. General admission is $10, Senior $8, Children under 14 FREE.

Yelp
Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) FASH Museum of Fashion & Film is located on SCAD's Atlanta Campus on Peachtree Street. Walking distance from Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA), High Museum of Art, etc. it is towards the Amtrak Atlanta Train Station. The museum focuses on showcasing artists & SCAD Fashion & Film Students. Individuals create various types of fashion & design - traditional fashion, contemporary fashion, as well as films, etc. SCAD's Atlanta Campus is supercute. Upon going into the front entrance, it was nice to be greeted by lovely staff & SCAD Students. Visitors were signing up for SCAD's upcoming 2 -hour college tour scheduled at 2pm. Staff provided directions to gain access to SCAD's FASH Museum of Fashion & Film, which is towards the back of the campus, near the parking lot. Once the parking lot was found, it took additional minutes to locate the special elevators to get to the museum. SCAD Students greeted museum visitors, & kindly explained that one exhibit was still under construction, so there was one exhibit on display. The "Manish Arora : Life Is Beautiful" Exhibit in 2024 celebrated Indian Designer Manish Arora (Former Designer). The exhibit inicluded gorgeous dresses w / in his clothing collection from 2006-2019. One of my favorites was a dress that Arora made & that Nicki Minaj wore to the 2010 American Music Awards! Rich colors, fabrics, materials, etc. that Arora & SCAD Students used to create their clothing masterpieces were so cool to view. SCAD Fash Museum of Fashion & Film had an impromptu gift shop near the chic sitting /parlor area. Visitors watched the Manish Arora film which chronicled his life, & that centered on designs in his clothing collection. Tues. - Sat. - 10am - 5pm Sun. - 12pm - 5pm scadfash.org @scadfash Please check their website to get onto their mailing list, to find out about current exhibits, etc.

Yelp
The collection and presentation here is impeccable; all the more so that authentic costumes from major, popular cinematic productions are currently on display here. The explanations into the pieces, culture, artistic movements, and artists themselves are great, detailed, and serve to bolster the experience as well as appreciation of the arts. Likewise, there are very few museums that focus on fashion, let alone as a piece of artistic rendering and critique. Simply it, you should not miss out on a visit or two. There is even a beautiful terrace to enjoy views and perhaps a drink or two after you finish perusing the art. And parking is ample and free; a rarity in Atlanta. What tethers this place is downward is how brief and limited the museum is. Even if you take your time (and lots of photos), saying this place takes 30 minutes to complete would possibly be an overestimation.

Yelp
The outfits & costumes on display were stunning. Loved the QR codes to watch informative and entertaining videos. If you love fashion, the Grammys, pop rock or country superstars, Oscar fashion, anything like that, visit this museum. Host an event there. It was a terrific experience. And the patio deck outside at the entrance offers great vistas. Need to find my pix to share

Yelp
I really enjoyed visiting the SCAD fASH museum. It was really difficult to learn about it but I believe it is a must see for any fashion lover when you are visiting Atlanta. I'm surprised it's not listed in any of the brochures or websites with 100 Atlanta attractions. When I visited the museum they had a Balenciaga exhibit and a Manish Arora exhibit. I found the Balenciaga exhibit a little underwhelming. There were a few pieces I really enjoyed and could appreciate the design and craftsmanship of the items. However, it didn't really impress me. On the other hand, the Manish Arora exhibit was outstanding. Manish has designed fashion pieces for tons of celebrity icons like Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus and so many other celebrities. His pieces are outstanding and out of this world with intricate pieces that take hours to sew together. His pieces are couture and one of a kind. Some have tons of sparkle due to all of the Swarovski crystals used and others are fantastic Indian style garments for very formal affairs. The collections at this museum are always changing and definitely worth checking out. The museum costs $10.00 American to attend. I highly recommend it!

Yelp
I attended a Yelp Elite event here on last week. The fashions were definitely fashionggggggg. Mkay. This was my first time visiting the fashion museum and I will definitely be making my way back for the next exhibit when it comes. The guides were very knowledgeable. The exhibit was very nice, eye catching and straight to the point. It was a very intimate setting and if you are a true fashion enthusiast, you would definitely appreciate the setting. I def recommend!!!

Yelp
What a nice museum! It's a quick museum to walk through but you can end up spending lot a of time if you plan to admire each piece of clothing. Well curated, friendly staff.

Yelp
A visit to the SCAD Fashion Museum was a well overdue for me. A friend invited a group to celebrate her birthday to experience two exhibitions--The Blonds: Glamor, Fashion, Fantasy and Ellen Von Unwerth: This Side of Paradise. Complimentary parking in the garage was seamless. Take the elevator to "M." The Blonds exhibit displayed wild and exciting fashion styles. The Ellen Von Unwerth was a photos exhibit. I purchased a fashionable scarf for $80. The museum features a nice outdoor seating area with an amazing view of Atlantic Station that is ideal for wonderful weather. Staff were current students and had great thongs to say about their experience. Overall, the $10 entry fee was worth the experience. It took about an hour to view both exhibits.

Yelp
For context, I'd been wanting to see Madame Grès for 10 years. Otherwise, this review might not have happened. I set off to see the exhibit for Madame Grès on what would prove to be a day of weather havoc... the sky fell soon after I came out of the museum.... It was a bit of a quest. Getting to SCAD, no problem! Finding the entrance.... Oh boy.... Clearly this is NOT the design museum, or they would have failed at their design. Went around the building once, going through the tunnel that runs under it, no entrance or pedestrian signs (there were some for the parking lot, didn't occur to me that that would be it). After going to the main entrance and asking a person that worked there (very friendly and helpful), up the parking ramp I went... as there seemed to be no other way... At least Madame Grès didn't disappoint and was well worth the wait! Fabulous! On the exhibit set up, can't say I liked the glass casings for some of the dresses, might be in place to protect them, so... ok, ok... Leaving was another quest.... Still don't know which floor pedestrians are supposed to use to leave the museum, I ended up walking down the parking ramp.... Into a storm (not SCAD's fault, I could have been home on time before the rain started had I not been in the escape room that was getting in and out of the museum? Who knows!)

Yelp
My toxic trait is that I think I could make everything in this exhibit with my off-brand sewing machine LOL. Location and Parking The museum is located on the top floor of SCAD. It is borderline midtown/buckhead area. There is ample signage to lead you to the location, and parking is free! Venue and Atmosphere The lobby is white marble with fresh flowers and gold accents. A friendly SCAD student confirmed our tickets (we purchased online for $10 each) and directed us to download the digital guide. My partner and I entered the gallery and were swept away by the gorgeous colors of the Christian Siriano exhibit. I wanted them all! I really appreciated that there were plus size dresses in the mix. The second exhibit is masks and costumes made from rare, high-end sneakers. My partner is a sneaker head and she loved it. The third exhibit is dedicated to Andre Leon Talley. It features photos, one of his garments, and a heartfelt audio tribute from a SCAD professor who was his longtime friend. This area is also the gift shop, but you can't tell immediately. It looks like a fancy living room with coffee table books displayed on a built in bookshelf on one side, and antique furniture displaying modern handmade jewelry on the other. I appreciate that it doesn't seem like a money grab, but more like a curated experience that happens to be for sale. Outside the museum is a large patio that overlooks the city and offers panoramic views. I am all about a rooftop, so this was a nice surprise. Service The same student that greeted us asked us about our favorite exhibit as we were leaving, and wished us a warm goodbye. She was nice and welcoming. Verdict The museum is small, but the space is used well and the exhibits are immersive. I will return to see the next designer on display!

Yelp
Oh, the fashion!!!! So much pretty to be seen. You can't touch, but you get an upclose look at the fabrics and stitches of select favorite designers from the past and today. QR codes go indepth to break down each piece, who wore it and often had the designer's sketches of the object inches from your face. I found the QR codes hard to find, and the gift shop oddly placed in the middle of one of the 2 display rooms. Don't miss the "porch" off the lobby! It has a spectacular view of the city.

Yelp
I'm a member so I get invited to openings of new exhibits. I attended the opening of "Draped", which was fabulous. The free parking is always a plus when visiting the museum. There were hors d' oeuvres passed that were pretty good. It was close to Thanksgiving so it was great to have a sweet potato filled puff and a mini cinnamon apple pie. The staff, which are students, were every where to answer questions and they were happy to help and are very knowledgeable. The curator was there. The lighting and layout of the dresses is always top notch at SCAD FASH. There is a gift area with nice items that I find to be pricey. Its nice to be able to see these works of art up close. I would recommend going to see any exhibit here. And I recommend becoming a member!!! It more than covers all the possible exhibits they bring in a year and affords the opportunity to go to special openings.

Yelp
Wow! What a unique museum- if you enjoy Project Runway or other fashion-based TV shows you'll love this museum. A little hard to find but the exhibits were phenomenal. Really nifty gift shop too!

Yelp
We came to this beautiful exhibit last July for my birthday & I couldn't have spent my bday doing anything else but this. I've been a fan of Siriano since Project Runway and to be this close to some of his iconic creations was simply surreal. The exhibit was put together beautifully, from the clothes to the way they were positioned. My partner & I were mesmerized walking around while observing the details on those iconic pieces. The staff was friendly.

Yelp
First, I want to break down my initial preparation before visiting the exhibits. Initially, we couldn't just walk up to explore the exhibit. We had to purchase our tickets online and reserve our visitation slot. When we arrived, they asked for our e-ticket to scan, and instructed us to stand in front of a temperature machine. Once this was completed, there was no surprise that we would have to wear a mask for the entire visit. Thankfully, If you forget your mask, they will provide you with one. They don't play either! When I attempted to take photos in the lobby, security checked me real quick asking me to put on a mask before entering. Oh, parking was free! I visited to see the Ruth Carter exhibit (famous costume designer) and Derrick Adams Exhibit of the late Patrick Kelly. More people should know about this exhibit and support. After I visited, I wanted to go back! Unfortunately, the Derrick Adams Exhibition of Patrick Kelly closed the day after my visit. Ruth Carter's exhibit will be on display until September 12, 2021. To purchase tickets, please visit their website. If you have the chance, please go see it for yourself in person. These pictures simply do not do it justice. Also to read more on my experience, please visit my blog at lalafoxx.com.

Yelp
This is a beautiful show with a variety of unique clothing pieces that have been well maintained and organized even in a small museum space. The show focused on specific designers, highlighting their eccentric work in each piece while providing clothing from a variety of occasions. Even with the nice museum, there were few pieces presented and the staff were not very friendly. It was not intuitive on where to find the descriptions of each individual piece of clothing as they were not posted near the clothing items. Instead, they were put on their website and took effort to search and find the descriptions of each item.

Madi S.

Yelp
This museum is a little gem! Currently, the Ruth E. Carter costume exhibit and the photography exhibit are wonderful. I've been at least 5 times and taken different visitors and friends and they've all loved it. I think it's a great short-ish activity to do while in the city. I love speaking with the SCAD students and seeing some SCAD student and alumni work incorporated as well. Looking forward to future exhibits! Also the rooftop overlook to the city is a nice bonus!

Yelp
This is the 10th show I've seen at SCADFASH and I've never been disappointed. Hundreds of amazing outfits to see. Try and snag a student guide to point out the details like dresses printed on crystal mesh -amazing! I wish the gift shop had more of a selection but I'm not taking a star off for that. Plentiful free parking and fancy powder rooms! Great lawn for photo ops of the city skyline too!

Yelp
Ok so I was very excited to hear that Atlanta has a fashion museum, and finally got a chance to see their collection. Admission price is $10, so I thought, okay this is cheap! Well, I was a bit disappointed by how small the collection was. The Bill Cunningham exhibition was kinda boring although I am a fan of his work. I thought they could have used more effort to display his photographs. The Herrera dresses were stunning! And I understand that they change their exhibition regularly so if I live here I probably would opt for membership or something. Parking was free tho so that's a plus! Also, I would have liked it more if admission was less.

Yelp
The Guo Pei exhibit was well worth the 5 hour drive from Winston Salem, NC to Atlanta, GA! It was an extraordinary display of couture meets costume. As a Costume Designer and fashion enthusiast, it was a dream come true to see such a dazzling display of fine silk and jewels used in such a magnificent way. What an experience!!

Yelp
Love everything about this museum. So unique! Love how the students are able to offer insight about each peice and information about the designers!

Yelp
What a treat to see the Cinematic Couture exhibit today at SCAD Atlanta. The guide on their website was perfect for identifying the costume, who wore it, what movie/TV show, and the designer. Well staffed by friendly people. I will definitely return for other exhibits. We used the family rate for the three of us, only $20.00 and great parking.

Yelp
BEAUTIFUL exhibit of fashion by Guo Pei This museum is one of the best kept secrets in Atlanta. The dresses in the Guo Pei exhibit are beyond beautiful, and the staging for this space is the best I have ever seen. Our docent was a young man working on his masters in fine film and he helped edit the accompanying historical film of the dresses. It was great to see the actual dress and then the film of a model wearing that dress on a runway. The lighting for this exhibit, the special order manikins, the revolving bases - these were all part of what made this such a fun experience. This is the second exhibit I've seen at Scad Fash and both were exceptional. Parking is free in the adjacent parking garage. Follow the purple line through the garage to the 4th floor. Tickets are reasonably priced and available to purchase in the lobby.

Yelp
The Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta opened SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in October 2015. The inaugural exhibition was devoted to "Oscar de la Renta: His Legendary World of Style" was mind-blowing! More than sixty classic pieces dating back to the early sixties and gorgeous gowns loaned by high-profile women and A-listers for major events where featured. I was so impressed that the exhibit was executed and supported by talented, enthusiastic, and aspiring students. I enjoy personally hearing the 'back story' of each dress. The current exhibition, Carolina Herrera "Refined Irreverence," celebrates the 35th anniversary of the House of Herrera and is the first museum showing of her work. I met Ms. Herrera years ago in Spain. I was very excited to see this exhibit. Seventy five stunning garments highlight Herrera's good taste in modern elegant classic style. Membership is available. The Pierre Cardin "Pursuit of the Future" was another amazing SCAD Fash exhibit. Featured are seven decades of fashion designs from the French futurist including iconic designs from the '50s and'60s. Marc-Antoine's fashion illustrations in his first solo exhibition "Unapologetic Lines" is a very nice collection are beautifully captured works of fashion icons and celebrities. Big kudos to this fabulous learning museum. www.scadfash.org

Yelp
Beautiful museum of fashion. The lighting was great dresses on the manikins were exquisite.Nice costume designs. Yelp
One of the few museums in the south to offer fashion exhibitions. Part of the SCAD school in Atlanta and Savannah. Went to Savannah to see the Oscar de la Renta exhibit and didn't know about Atlanta. Was fortunate to see the Carolina Herrera in Atlanta. I will be signing up to get email updates on exhibits. How fortunate the school is to have Leon Talley on the board to help bring high in fashion to the South. The docents are students and most are very enthusiastic to share information with you. Worth the trip from Florida.
