On our recent visit to Shetland Island, Scotland, one of the stops on our tour was Scalloway Castle. The castle was commissioned by Earl Patrick Stewart and designed and built by Andrew Crawford in the early 1600's.
Stewart's main residents was the Earl's Palace, built by his father on Birsay, Orkney. Scalloway Castle was only used by his representative in Shetland.
The castle has 4 floors with the first having a grand hall and 2 fireplaces. A staircase leads you up to the other floors . Due to the poor condition of the interior of the castle, defining the rooms on the upper floors were difficult. Never the less it was quite amazing to be standing in a castle built over 400 hundred years ago !
It was said that Earl Patrick Stewart was a tyrant. The castle was built on the sweat and blood of the people of his parish. Shortly after the completion of the castle, Stewart was imprisoned and eventually executed in 1615.
