We've visited the gardens many times over the years but have never been inside the house. As Historic Houses members we decided to take advantage of a free visit & do the house tour. It was on an upstairs downstairs theme & was really insightful, interesting & funny. Our guide Anne was brilliant & had us all wowed with her stories. The house has a lot of history & a lot of beauty & is well worth a visit. The gardens were lovely as always & we had a good walk around the estate & over towards the lake, dodging hundreds of visiting geese. The cafe was very busy so we just grabbed a cheese scone & a bit of cake (delicious). They also make an excellent hot chocolate!

A beautiful walled garden, just as it says on the tin. We spent an hour wandering amongst the topiary and the flower beds admiring dahlias and lots of other plants that were no less beautiful just because I didn't know what they were. Tbh we would have stayed longer but this was a very hot day.

What a fabulous garden; a real credit to all concerned! I was very fortunate to be able to visit as part of a teciprocal agreement with Burnby Hall Gardens in Pocklington and am so glad that I did! The gardens and the grounds are beautifully laid out with bright planting schemes in a series of gardens each on a different theme. After visiting the cafe and touring the gardens I explored the extensive grounds before making my way back to the cafe exterior to view the plant sales area. Well worth a visit; highly recommended!

Really nice house and gardens and quite a lot of walks to do. The cafe is good also. Quite few places you can take your dog with but not everything is open to them.

Excellent visit. House interesting (Sarah the tour guide and Craig the house manager/butler extremely knowledgable) but the walled garden is the star. Great walk around the estate and cafe excellent. All staff lovely. Came across it by accident and very glad we did!

Beautiful walled gardens even on a wet day!! The garden has been beautifully designed and the colour scheme was very complementary! There are trails in the wider parkland area and around the Hall. Lunch was great with plenty of seats, choices and quick service. On a dry day, I would have loved to sit on the benches and absorb the peaceful scenery!!

Visited on a weekday in September. There are guided tours of the hall and we did not do one so no comments about that. However, the walled gardens and parkland are lovely. There was still a lot of colour in the gardens, which was remarkable. The plant combinations have all been carefully selected to give a very pleasing effect. If you like going to gardens then you will enjoy a visit here. Added to which there is a cafe serving a limited menu but everything we saw was very good quality and presented well. They also had plants for sale at very reasonable prices. What's more they all looked very healthy and there were a number of plants which I have never seen in a typical garden centre. I'm looking forward to going again in the Summertime when I am sure the gardens will be spectacular.

Scampston Land was bought in the late 1600s for William Hustler. The estate was bought in the 1690s by Sir William St Quintin, 3rd Baronet, who was Receiver General for Ireland and Member of Parliament for Hull. The estate and title were inherited in 1723 by his nephew -- also William -- who was MP for Thirsk. The first house was built around 1700 and was remodelled to a design by Thomas Leverton in 1795-1800. This is the house as you see it today, with its magnificent Regency interiors and art collection Capability Brown landscaped the gardens in 1772.Scampston's refurbished Walled Garden, designed by Piet Oudolf, opened in 2004. There is an onsite cafe, plant sale and an enthusiastic tour of the house which features some fantastic family portraits by Gainsborough. The house decor is tasteful and the wallpaper and paint highlight these portraits very well.
