Scandic Grand Tromsø

I don't fully understand the negative reviews for this hotel. Given its 3-star rating, I believe it's more than adequate. The breakfast offerings far exceeded what I'd expect at 3-star hotel, with a wide selection of fresh products. The room was spacious, and the hotel staff took care of daily trash removal and made our beds, even though we didn't specifically request cleaning (information on "cleaning on request" was in the room). The location was ideal, as it was as close as possible to the city center. The hotel staff were very friendly and accommodating. Although we were unable to check out late due to the hotel being fully booked, we were able to store our luggage in the luggage storage (it was the weakest point of the hotel...) and stay in the lobby, and were even offered a complimentary cup of tea or coffee. Again, if we were staying at a 5- or 4-star hotel, I would have been more particular about certain aspects. However, this hotel exceeded my expectations - especially after reading all the negative reviews. I'm fairly confident that, if it were located in Spain, it would be proudly boasting a 4-star rating (and then I would complain ;) ).

Amazing location, in the center of Tromsø. The room itself was large and comfy. Bathroom was well equipped. It was pretty clean and the bedsheets were comfortable. It had some annoying design issues (TV in a weird place, heater behind the curtains, bad sound insulation, so you would really hear the noise and traffic outside). Breakfast was amazing. Very varied and great quality. They even have the option to get some as takeaway as a lunch box at a pretty good price (cheaper per kg than a salad box at the supermarket).

Great hotel for our short stay. Room was large and comfortable. Breakfast was very good, with lots of options. Bacon, egg (fried,scrambled or boiled) beans, toast and brown sauce was my choice. But there was a good choice of pastries and breads, yogurts and cream cheeses, meats etc etc. The location was ideal on the main street, a short walk from the bus station where lots of the tours depart from.

On first impressions, our room was quite small. We did had a very good night sleep though. Bed sheets were clean and comfortable. In the morning, I was really happy with the breakfast selection. It wasn’t overly crowded, so that’s good. The bacon, hams and potatoes were really delicious, I can’t help myself to another servings. Juices and coffee are served from a machine, so feel free to help yourself. It’s quite centrally located so you will be able to stone’s throw to restaurants and nearly attractions.

This hotel needs to step up its game as tourism explodes.|Reception is unfriendly and knows little about the surroundings.|No control on heat in room, Central Heating, way too hot.|The hotel bar is a grungy, sterile, nightclub feel. Desolate as well.|The restaurant isn’t open at night due to staff sickness.|Only allowed one pillow per guest which was a pancake.|No Smart tv but no English language channel, crazy!|Lighting in room is very dark.|Closet is ridiculous, 10” wide|No bath mat.|The positive about this place is breakfast, fabulous!|Be sure to tell them upon arrival how often you want your room serviced!|One cannot buy a bottle of wine from the bar to take to the room!|I lie, one more positive was hailing taxis from front desk, very efficient!

While I wasnt staying at this hotel, at around 7.15pm I went into the restaurant for dinner as it advertised roast and buffet. The dining area was empty and on asking I was told that all the guests had already eaten and left for tours. The were a number of staff standing around talking. On looking at the buffet all the dishes looked tired, the meat was dry and overcooked and everything simply looked unappealing. The staff said it had been sitting out since 5pm. With all the staff you would expect they could make an effort to give better presentation or at least take dishes into the chef to be tidied up. There was not one thing in the roast buffet or any of the other choices that appealed. Unless you're with a coach tour booked into the hotel, I would avoid this place for dinner. I've only review the staff service I encountered in the restaurant, but it put me off evening thinking of staying at this hotel.

The highlight is definitely the breakfast buffet, easily one of the best in the whole of Tromso. There are lots of different cheese and ham to eat. The cook food such as salmon is also delicious. Rooms are clean but small. The beds are a combination of 2 single bed. Location is definitely a winner so that's awesome

We recently had a 6-night stay at the Scandic Grand in a Junior Suite. I researched and Scandic Grand suites had more room than other hotels. This was great for a longer stay. The room was very comfortable. Staff was always pleasant and helpful with all our questions. The location is just minutes walk away from everything.the only downside was morning breakfast. We were there over Christmas and sometimes hard to get a table. We think this hotel is a great value.
