With an early morning flight out of the Luleå airport, the Scandic hotel felt like a safe and easy choice to spend the night. The hotel has a convenient location and we have always enjoyed our stays at Scandic hotels. But this time was different. In the middle of July the hotel lobby was a cool and comfortable 22C, but our rooms on the first floor felt closer to 30C.
No AC and insufficient ventilation in the room, with only a tiny window that could be opened enough to get a hint of the cool air outside, but not enough to cool the room. And since it was July it never gets dark this far north, so you have to chose between leaving the tiny window open and having the room lit up by the midnight sun, or closing the window and blackout shades and feel the room get warmer as the night goes on.
The room was equipped with a tiny tabletop-fan with a too short cord so you could enjoy the sauna heat breeze plus the irritating whirr of the fan, not unlike a cloud of arctic mosquitoes, while you lay awake regretting that you forgot to check if the hotel had AC.
Blame it on climate change, poor planning or poor design . I would never stay here again during the summer months...
Due to our 8AM flight we had to check out before the restaurant opened for breakfast, but they did provide us with a mini buffet at 6:15 with coffee, hard-boiled eggs, bread and cold cuts, exactly the kind of service your expect from Scandic.
