Australia's Newest 'Great Walk' Is a Multiday Hike Through the World's Largest Subtropical Rain Forest

"A five-day, 37-mile guided luxury hike through UNESCO-listed Gondwana Rainforests that blends low-impact, off-grid accommodation with high comfort; designers prioritized sustainability (down to testing showerheads) and guests hike in small groups of up to 12 with overnight bags shuttled ahead. The route showcases dramatic ridgeline views, forest recovery from the Black Summer fires, towering, mossy rainforest, historic timber-getter relics and a lookout where guides recount the story of Multuggerah and the Jagera resistance. The public can also access the physical trail independently, but the guided experience adds expert interpretation, gourmet meals, and logistical ease (suitable for walkers 15+ with reasonable fitness)." - Sarah Reid Sarah Reid Sarah Reid is a multi-award-winning Australian travel writer, editor, author, and sustainable travel expert with a passion for positive impact travel. I had the pleasure of doing this hike in July and cannot speak highly enough of the experience. Our guides for the 4 day walk were Lani and Max and they were fantastic and kept us not only in line but well informed throughout the walk. You quickly realise there is also a supporting cast working feverishly behind the scenes to make sure you are well fed and accommodated along the way. On our hike it was Trevor, Jake, Nick, Kiralee and Kira. The walk itself is breathtaking and we were fortunate to have perfect weather throughout the journey. Key highlights were the Gondwana Rainforest, the secret waterfalls, the panoramic vistas across valleys and surrounding peaks, multi coloured funghi, spear lillies, wildlife and the two-tier vertical ladder climb up a rock face. The most pleasant surprise of the trip was how much Spicers have committed to protecting the wildlife. Interestingly the ladder system is designed to protect the endangered Brush-Tailed Rock Wallabies whist further into the hike extensive efforts are made to protect Fleay's Barred Frog. The accommodation throughout the walk is perfectly integrated into the National Park and of the highest quality. All meals are carefully thought through to provide sustained energy release and meticlously prepared. You could easily be dining in a chefs hat restaurant. An additional benefit of the hike is the group dynamics. From the moment we all met we connected and supported each other like long lost friends. The only downside for me was the finish. Of course I did not want it to end but we found ourselves in the middle of noisy roadworks on the Cunningham Highway. I guess it was the dose of reality I needed after such an incredible 4 days. For anyone considering the trail I would highly recommend it and suggest the following: Stay at Spicers Hidden Peaks Cabins the evening before your hike as it is a great way to meet your guides and fellow hikers and ensures you are ready to go first thing in the morning to commence your trek. Use the hiking poles offered as they genuinely assist. I personally had never used them before and am glad I did. Spend a little extra on porterage of your main bag so that you can be as light as possible during the hike. Pack runners with good grip as well as hiking shoes as it will help conserve your feet. I found Day 1 and 2 ideal for runners and 3 and 4 for hiking shoes. Do some level of fitness training beforehand as whilst I would rate the hike as medium in terms of difficulty there are parts that are strenuous and the hardest days are 3 and 4. Once again I sincerely would like to thank the entire Spicers team and my fellow hikers for a truly memorable experience.

Did this trail with my wife just before easter. Our guides Kate, Peter and Sarah were helpful and always happy. Lovely group of people. Always smiling and maybe even at times overcaring. ;) The hike was lovely, it was fantastic to have a comfortable bed and accommodation each night and delicious food to eat. The other guests were all nice. We found the pace a little slow (we usually go more remote and carry more gear so emjoy a little more challenge) but evidently the pace needs to suit everyone on the trip. Tha ks for the great experience. Really great way for people to experience multiday walks in a safe environment without the need to have all the skills all at once. Thanks to all the team, spicers, the guides, the staff at the accommodation, the cleaners, the chefs and logistics team. Great work.

We did 2 day and 2 night walk and were guided by Grady and Brendan who were both very knowledgeable and patient and kept a good pace to match all levels of fitness in our group. It was a tough walk on the second day (all uphill) but definitely worth the view and the lovely minestrone soup made by Chef Jake. My only regret that I wasn't able to finish it! Thanks also go out to our lovely host Jess who was so enthusiastic and friendly and happy to do whatever she could to make our stay so comfortable. It was such a pleasure to see her smiling face after a day of hiking complete with hot towels to refresh ourselves - never lose your energy Jess! To Claudio who cooked our meals on the two nights - there were whispers in our group of taking you home with them so you could continue to cook your delicious dishes for them. Finally to chef Jake - we never met you however the seeded honey, home made ketchup and chillie and the turmeric pears were absolutely delicious. The overwhelming consensus from the group was that you need to sell these ASAP as everyone would be going home with armloads of your products. The accomodation was super comfortable and we had everything we needed to stay warm in the chilly nights. A thoroughly wonderful experience complete with all the pampering you would ever need. Will always be a memorable experience for us!

Absolutely recommend the 4 day hike. The team were so amazing, the food and accommodation were second to none. The walking trail was so spectacular it’s going to be hard to find any future hiking to live up to this one. Janner and Katie our guides were very knowledgeable and looked after us so well. Kerralee was the most welcome sight at the end of the day with warm towels, wine and cheese! All our meals were 5 star. The accommodation is just amazing . A very special experience, highly recommend this trip.

Epic 5 Day Guided Walk! Our group of 12 was expertly led throughout each day by Ellie and Hayden and greeted into camp each afternoon by the adorable Sophie. It was one of those incredibly special once in a lifetime experiences, the challenge, the scenery of Gondwana land, the indigenous and European history, the absolute luxury, and the bloody great people who made every day special. To have been able to walk 57km along the edge of that ancient volcano was an absolute privilege! Thanks to all the team at Spicers for making our first multi day walk such an awesome experience, we are well and truly hooked now. Other Great Walks of Australia look out!

What an unexpectedly outstanding hiking experience, and simply a must do for anyone wishing to connect and disconnect at the same time. The accommodation, the team, the food and the trail are all world class and arguably the best in Australia (and yes it's only 90 minutes from Brisbane). If you are in any doubt ...... invite some friends, just book it and be amazed !

Highly recommend this five day hike with overnight stays in very comfortable Spicers accomodation. With 2 guides (thanks Jack and Juanita) and 10 other guests (awesome bunch of people), we went on an informative and enjoyable journey that meandered across the range to Cunningham’s Gap. The hiking was challenging but manageable due to not being rushed and having time to stop, catch our breath and learn about the flora and fauna around us. The end of each hike was celebrated with plentiful amounts of good food, beverages and company. It was an amazing experience and kudos to the whole Spicers SRT team for their efforts in making our trip a memorable one.

We did the 4 day family friendly hike with our 12 and 14 year old daughters and we all loved it. Our guides Kim and Jenni were fantastic, the food was amazing (the girls were so well catered for), the stunning accommodation (we each had a different favourite night on the trail), the scenery, it was all fantastic. The girls were a little nervous about the distance but they were totally up for it and right at the front each day with the lead guide. A fabulous, family holiday, we highly recommend!
