I had the pleasure of doing this hike in July and cannot speak highly enough of the experience.
Our guides for the 4 day walk were Lani and Max and they were fantastic and kept us not only in line but well informed throughout the walk. You quickly realise there is also a supporting cast working feverishly behind the scenes to make sure you are well fed and accommodated along the way. On our hike it was Trevor, Jake, Nick, Kiralee and Kira.
The walk itself is breathtaking and we were fortunate to have perfect weather throughout the journey. Key highlights were the Gondwana Rainforest, the secret waterfalls, the panoramic vistas across valleys and surrounding peaks, multi coloured funghi, spear lillies, wildlife and the two-tier vertical ladder climb up a rock face.
The most pleasant surprise of the trip was how much Spicers have committed to protecting the wildlife. Interestingly the ladder system is designed to protect the endangered Brush-Tailed Rock Wallabies whist further into the hike extensive efforts are made to protect Fleay's Barred Frog.
The accommodation throughout the walk is perfectly integrated into the National Park and of the highest quality. All meals are carefully thought through to provide sustained energy release and meticlously prepared. You could easily be dining in a chefs hat restaurant.
An additional benefit of the hike is the group dynamics. From the moment we all met we connected and supported each other like long lost friends.
The only downside for me was the finish. Of course I did not want it to end but we found ourselves in the middle of noisy roadworks on the Cunningham Highway. I guess it was the dose of reality I needed after such an incredible 4 days.
For anyone considering the trail I would highly recommend it and suggest the following:
Stay at Spicers Hidden Peaks Cabins the evening before your hike as it is a great way to meet your guides and fellow hikers and ensures you are ready to go first thing in the morning to commence your trek.
Use the hiking poles offered as they genuinely assist. I personally had never used them before and am glad I did.
Spend a little extra on porterage of your main bag so that you can be as light as possible during the hike.
Pack runners with good grip as well as hiking shoes as it will help conserve your feet. I found Day 1 and 2 ideal for runners and 3 and 4 for hiking shoes.
Do some level of fitness training beforehand as whilst I would rate the hike as medium in terms of difficulty there are parts that are strenuous and the hardest days are 3 and 4.
Once again I sincerely would like to thank the entire Spicers team and my fellow hikers for a truly memorable experience.
