A truly cozy and authentic place where history comes alive—massive model ships hanging from the ceiling, ancient paintings, and religious icons on the walls all add to an atmosphere that elevates both the meal and the experience. We had a wiener schnitzel and a rump steak—both well-prepared and enjoyable. The potatoes were just right, and the vegetables were fresh and flavorful. The schnitzel could have used a bit of sauce and maybe some extra greens on the side, though I’m sure that’s not part of the original recipe. Service, however, was a highlight! Our sharp and energetic waitress brought a great vibe to the evening and made us feel right at home. Definitely a spot I’d recommend to first-time visitors in Lübeck or anyone looking to soak up a bit of that classic German charm.

If you’ve travelled to Lübeck like me to soak in as much medieval fairytale vibes as you can, then a visit to Schiffergesellschaft is a must. This is a preserved and restored Shipmaster/ Seaman/ Captains Guildhall from 1535. The menu comes with a historical overview of this guild and how it survives to this day. The interior is simply medieval maritime charm. I tried my first Labskaus here - a traditional north german dish for fisherman made with corned beef mashed with potatoes and beets, served with a sunny fried egg and classically accompanied with pickles, pickled herring, onions and beets. I loved it. My main I ordered something off their specials menu, Plaice Finkenerder style. Bacon crisped up and rendered, the fat is then used to cook the bed of cabbage and a tender plaice fillet crisped to perfection. It’s accompanied by parsley potatoes - simple and delicious. I enjoyed it all with a light beer. I hope to visit again someday!

This is such a fantastic place. Restaurant serving typical North German fare in a setting that couldn't be better suited. The house used to house the Shipowners Guild. Good qualify food. A bit pricey, although by no means extreme. And taking in the atmosphere, friendly service and quality and quantity of food you get - it is warmly recommended.

Absolutely world class. HIGHLY recommend and will be back. Remember to book your table. Food was excellent and the garden was really nice 👍

The place is nice and more spacious than expected, so it can accommodate big groups. I totally recommend it if you want to try some traditional food. The food is good, but it's also a bit pricey. So you should expect to pay around 50 euros per person.

The menu is extensive and the food excellent. The staff are friendly, helpful, and speak English. The prices are a little high, but you would expect as much in such an establishment in the heart of the old town. The inside is historic and a great place to see, while the outside courtyard is a nice place to sit in the sun.

Beautiful, and high attention to detail. We had little time but came by earlier in the day to eat, but they opened after 12:00. By the time we returned, we just didn't have the time to enjoy this unique experience. You MUST step in to the restaurant to enjoy the beauty of the decor. We will be back.

We visited with a local who used to live in Lübeck 50 years ago and visits the restaurant every time possible. Not being used to eating labskaus I was happy to order the starter one. Very salty dish and having raw fish and stew together is something to get used to. Everything we tried was very good and we can really recommend the home made ice cream. The service was perfect- we didn’t realise that the waiter didn’t know we didn’t speak German (2 out of 3) and everyone was very polite and helpful.

Yelp
A bit touristy but good. Portions are large--consider sharing if you are not a big eater. They have arranged to seat people apart for social distancing which we appreciated. As with most all of Germany, you had to show your id and Covid vaccination status. For U.S. citizens, your CDC card and passport work just fine almost everywhere. I would give it 3.5 if Yelp allowed half stars.

Yelp
This place is very popular for dinner, and all tables were reserved when I arrived at 5:45pm. However, since I was on my own and was just planning to have a light meal, the waitress kindly allowed me to sit at a table that was reserved for an hour later. I had the Lübecker fish soup, a cream soup made with smoked fish. It was savory and delicious, but be forewarned that it is quite a small portion in an appetizer-sized cup for 8 euros. It did come with bread on the side, and was fine for a light dinner. The main guild hall where I sat is extremely atmospheric, and the other rooms I saw were also attractive. Service was efficient and friendly.

Yelp
Deciding we hadn't had enough traditional Northern German cuisine, the wife and I decided to find a place in Lübeck where we could try the traditional dish of the area... Labskaus. This is a really interesting and cool place right as you walk in. It's got a dark ambiance, wooden ships hanging from the ceiling; long, shared, traditional-style tables. We ordered the Captain's Labskaus, and the Schweinebraten, a pork roast with dried fruit sauce. If you're unaware, Labskaus is sort of meat slop, in this case made from a salted beef brisket. It does not look good. It's served with an egg on top and a plate of herring and some cold cubed beets and carrots. It's... Well it's gross. The wife figured, maybe we had judged the dish unfairly, maybe we should give it a shot. Well... It's not.. Terrible. It's not awful, but it's also not really good. I didn't think I'd ever order it again. Now the Schweinebraten, I thought it was great. Tender. The died fruit sauce was delicious, and the sort of roughly chopped beet mash it was served was with pretty good as well. The wife wasn't such a big fan, but hey, it's me writing these reviews, not her. If you're looking for traditional Northern German cuisine, of you're looking to mow down on some Labskus, then hell, why not try Schiffergesellschaft?

Yelp
I'd heard about this place many months before coming to Lübeck, and was excited that it was chosen for our social night out. Our group of 18 piled into one of the long tables, admiring the coat hooks that make everything easy, and the historic decor. The menu is huge, and a little daunting, particularly if you don't speak German or are unfamiliar with Baltic cuisine. While the usual items are translated, the specials are not. Fortunately, we had some Germans at the table who could translate. I got the Matjes at the insistence of my Swedish colleague, and chose the venison from the list of specials, because it's something we don't often see in America. The Matjes (herring with cucumber salad) was tasty - not too oily on the fish, and nice tang and cream from the cucumber salad. The main of venison was flavorful, aided by the gravy and cranberries, since the meat itself was a tad dry. Sadly, the brussels sprouts had been boiled and were soft and mushy. The staff was excellent. Our primary waiter did a great job of listening and interpreting everyone's requests, and worked patiently with his colleagues to make sure that the right dish got to the right customer, even when his colleagues were frustrated that none of us knew the German names for the food.

Yelp
Frankly, the only reason to eat at the Schiffergesellschaft is to sit in the big guild hall, the dark room with the long tables and the hanging ship models. Unfortunately, despite having a reservation, we were seated elsewhere - in a room with all the charm of a hotel banquet room. The food is okay, and the portions are huge. But I was sorely disappointed to miss the real experience.

Yelp
***Maybe one helpful caveat*** My colleague and I walked in a little blindly to the matter but we weren't sure how we were supposed to tip and the credit card slip doesn't give you an option to tip. I found out later via TripAdvisor and web that either the restaurant automatically includes a service charge, or you can let the waiter know PRIOR to handing your credit card how much you want to add (usually rounding up a Euro or a few). Leaving money on the table didn't sound like a proper option. That is a new experience to me, but I will correct myself next time I come to this place! Restaurant -- It may sound cheesy, but I felt like I was in one of those Germany Tavern/restaurants you find at an amusement park like Busch Gardens. The atmosphere was great with an old style wood architecture and covered with model ships hanging from the ceiling and a beautiful stained glass picture of ships. Very neat. The seating arrangement was a little interesting, sharing a long table with other guests. I suppose though that is as foreign of a feeling as sitting at a Hibachi table though! :))). Food -- Weiner-schnitzel dish with fried seasoned potatoes was amazing. Another party sitting next to me had the beef stew and it also looked very good. Maybe next time! Price -- Roughly 15-20 Euros per entree. Not bad

Yelp
We ate here on recommendation from our hotel and loved it! We were only in Lubeck for one night and walked around most of the city in half a day. This restaurant was one of our favorites as the decor is of model ships, old paintings and chandeliers with candles...a great atmosphere. The wiener schnitzel is amazing with the potatoes!

Yelp
Try the matjes herring if it's in season or any seafood dish. They are all very fresh, very good. If you are brave, try labskaus. Only the cook knows what is in it. It looks like dog food but tastes fantastic! Highly recommended.

Yelp
This property used to be a meeting house of the seafarers ever since 1535 and became a restaurant in 1868. The models of ships on the high ceiling remind you of this. Chandeliers with real candles and several old paintings add to the fantastic atmosphere, and even the benches you sit on are still the original ones. Where else can you eat in such a historical environment? ------------------------ The service is warm, welcoming and friendly. The vegetarian pasta I had was cooked nicely. As a dessert I had marzipan parfait, and it was yummy too. ------------------------ If you like great food, are fascinated by the ocean and love travelling, this is the place to go to. Highly recommended.

Yelp
I had the most incredible dining experience at Schiffergesellshaft. From the moment you walk in to this restaurant, it's like you've been transported to the swashbuckling times of the 1500's. The restaurant has old dark wooden beams, wooden ships hanging from the ceilings, red paper lanterns, and real artifacts from Lubeck's maritime history. It's amazing and I've never seen anything like it before. The restaurant serves hearty cuisine from steaks, seafood, to beef stew. I had the beef stew with apricots and it was great. Big portions, tender beef, and hand made noodles. I also tried their flounder which had a very unique taste to it as well. The fish appetizer plate was really fresh and I loved the shrimps. When booking a reservation, make sure to ask for a spot in the older part of the restaurant, not the newly attached dining rooms. I felt like eating here was like having the last great meal before heading off to sea for the next few weeks. It's a great place to take anyone, and it doesn't get much better than this!

Yelp
The Schiffergesellschaft is in Lübeck - as the French say - 'incontournable'. You must have been here. there are not so many places where you can think you're sitting in a 500 or so old restaurant with beautiful wooden replicas of ships dangling from the beams. The result is also that it can be very crowded. And very loud. The cuisine is classic Northeren German with a dash of experimentation like Northsea shrimps with pesto or salmon cream soup with paoched 'quenelles' of salmon and dill.
