We wanted to have a "nature experience" near the Heidi-Dorf, but it might not be the kind of experience we were looking for.
To make sure you make the right decision, here are the pros and cons:
Pros:
+ it's clean and nicely decorated
+ it's near the Heidi-dorf (approximately 20 minutes away on foot)
+ the products you get are good quality products and regional products
+ you have enough quantity
+ you have cows not far away, so it's nice to greet and hug them
Cons:
- for the experience it is, it's very expensive. You pay above all for products you wouldn't have bought otherwise anyway (at least for us), for example: liquor, a bottle of wine (so if you don't drink alcohol, you would pay way too much for what you get)
- you don't really have privacy (you are literally in front of a big farmhouse, cars are sometimes leaving the property or arriving in the property; you can also feel the vibes of the everyday work next to you; a man comes sometimes really next to the barrel probably to check the electricity or something; that's certainly not the right spot for a romantic stay!)
- you have the toilets approximately 100 meters away from the barrel. You might think like we did that it's not a problem, but actually it is, because you spend the evening drinking tea in the barrel so you have to wake a couple of times during the night to go to the toilets in the cold. Not agreeable at all, given that each time you go out to go to the toilets you wake up your partner.
- as you might have seen, there is no shower (so paying 270 frs for little comfort is very much even in Switzerland). When you have the fondue, you pay 50 frs per person (very high price also given that you have no service - so here again you pay for the alcohol and you waste money if you don't drink alcohol).
- you have to pay right away when you arrive (no possibility to pay in advance) and if you forgot that, they will look down on you until you have paid. We were disturbed in the middle of the breakfast to go fetch the money. We really felt they were suspicious and no trusting at all, which was not agreeable at all.
So, all in all, we had the impression to have paid too much for the experience and we did not enjoy it very much.
It's whether a nature-experience nor a comfort experience. It's a bit like expensive comfort-camping in front of farmhouse.
Here are our piece of advice:
- if you want a nature-experience, rather wait until May or June and go sleep on the straw somewhere in the region (much less expensive and more nature-like)
- Maienfeld is overpriced for almost everything and not very well connected with public transports, rather go to Bad Ragaz (much better connected, it's 5 minutes away with the train, so you will be able to come easily to Maienfeld for the day, either by train or by bus) and consider sleeping somewhere else than Maienfeld (if not on the straw).

We stayed here for 2 nights to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary. I booked it as a surprise for my husband and was looking for something different and this certainly is.||The communication was excellent between myself and Andy Hartmann who advised me on transport options and provided a detailed map for our 20 min walk from Maienfeld Station.||The Schlaff-Fass was simply brilliant. We loved the unique design. It was warm and cosy with everything you could possibly need. The breakfast provided was great. The attention to detail was faultless.||The toilet and wash basin was in a separate building and although other reviews said there was only cold water, our host provided us with a thermal jug of hot water each morning. It just enhanced our unique experience, something different from the norm.||Our host was friendly and shared with us the history of the vineyard. The views were amazing and an ldeal position for those who enjoy walking and exploring the Heidi trails and the Alps.||We enjoyed our stay and wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Schlaff-Fass to those who are looking for that "something different".||It was our first visit to Switzerland and we are now looking forward to return.

This overnight stay ended up being even cooler than I thought it would be. First of all the area is gorgeous - mountains, vineyards, animals - Maienfeld is amazing. It isn't a big city but still close enough to everything (including the Heidi house) to make it a great location.||||Not only were the accommodations amazing for the price but the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. We unfortunately did not take enough time to review the policies (i.e. cash only) and the staff remained incredibly patient. Angelika even drove me to the bank in town to take the fee out of the ATM so I didn't have to walk.||||The wine barrels were super cute, there was a Monopoly game available, and the food was amazing. I am a pretty frugal traveler and have no regrets regarding the 111 CHF I spent for this experience.

We stayed here for one night before heading up the mountains after christmas. There was no snow but despite temperatures being quite cold these barrels can be nicely heated, making it a wonderful cozy and comfortable stay-over even in cold days! Unfortunately (and this is the ONLY and to be honest small 'but'), the toilet and washroom is located a few meters at the host's main house. Going to toilet during the night can become quite a tedious operation in winter... That said, there is otherwise nothing lacking in this place! ||||The view is beautiful and breathtaking when you get up first thing in the morning. We had asked for a Fondue being prepared for diner and we're speechless and the amount of things that were prepared for us upon arrival: With the fondue cheese and bread we also got a bottle of their home-made white wine, coffee, tea and water was all prepared, a small bottle of 'Röteli' as an aperitif, bündner nut cake for dessert and an extensive breakfast including salsiz, bread, cheese, milk, butter, jam, etc... ||||For this amount of effort and hospitality, even for such a short stay like ours, the stay in these barrel are one of the best stays we have ever experienced!

This accommodation's website gives one the impression that the sleepbarrels are at an exclusive location, next to vineyards. When we arrived, we noticed that in addition, these barrels were located next to a farmhouse, incl. a smelly dung pit not even 5 meters away from the barrels. We had two sleep barrels as we were with four. The barrel in the back had no window, just one door opening towards the dung pit and the noisy cows (all night long), which made sleeping a challenge. During the day, there were so many flies that sitting outside was not an option. The evenings were better. The location and the experience are indeed exclusive when you don't come during summer, when smells and flies can ruin your experience. We felt we paid too much for too little quality.
