"A unique beach made up of smooth white limestone rocks on Washington Island." - Jacqueline Kehoe

How to Spend 3 Days in Wisconsin's Door County

"Couples can take a trip to Washington Island in Wisconsin's Door County for the ultimate Midwestern beach vacation. The entire county is packed with romantic charm, thanks to its quaint B&Bs and cozy, old-school restaurants, but Schoolhouse Beach is especially worth a visit. The beach consists of smooth white pebbles instead of sand, and its location near the easternmost point in Wisconsin will make you feel like you're on the edge of the world." - Travel + Leisure Editors

"This lovely lakeshore beach has no sand but rather smooth limestone rocks that pleasantly massage one’s feet while walking. Conversely, this weird lakeshore beach has smooth limestone rocks that might hurt one’s feet so you should wear flip-flops if you want to walk to the water. No matter how sensitive the feet, Schoolhouse Beach is the perfect spot for people who don’t like getting sand in their bathing suits. Located on Wisconsin’s isolated Washington Island, and one of only five similar sand-less beaches worldwide, the shore is named for a one-room wooden schoolhouse that used to exist nearby but which has since been replaced by a picnic table and barbecue area. The small rocks were glacier-polished over thousands of years and are each small geological treasures. In fact, souvenir hunters carried off so many of the rocks there is now a steep fine for removing one. Most visitors come simply to swim in the clear water and sunbathe, but people often build cairns and other peculiar sculptures with the stones. When they aren’t trying to skip them along the surface of the water, that is." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Gorgeous little beach surrounded by coniferous grove. Plentybof parking and big public toilets. Arctically COLD waters. Water shoes highly recommended.

The water is attractive and very clear! There are several rock towers all around the place, which is a really lovely addition. There is enough parking and easy access to the beach trail. *DO NOT TAKE ANY ROCKS!* ‼️‼️

My favorite beach in the entire world because there is no SAND. No constantly cleaning out your sandals or dealing with kids whining about itchy sand getting in their swimsuit. Just nice smooth rocks - and you can even put down your towel and lie down comfortably! The water is also safe for swimming.

A very clean and unique beach! There is no sand, just stones. The water is pretty and clear. A ferry must be taken to this island to see this beach. The island itself is very different compared to the rest of Door County, in my opinion. Worth a visit!

Great place to go with family and friends for a picnic and a swim during the summer months. The stone beach is not the most comfortable to sit or lay down on, and the water can sometimes be inordinately cold and require some steady acclimating to, but Schoolhouse Beach Park does offer a beautiful scenic view of one of Washington Island's many inlets. There are grills available for use and several trash bins with which to dump your garbage so as not to litter the beach and water with debris and rubbish. I prefer visiting during the fall when the wind picks up and makes the water considerably choppy, and one can witness the tide and waves ebb and flow, crashing to and fro on the beach, each successful wave making smooth the countless stones marooned on the beach. So come on over and check it out. Cheers!

I recently visited Schoolhouse Beach Park and had a nice short visit there. The rocks are so interesting, take a look at one I found. A nice place if you have children or just a place for a picnic. A beautiful view.

One of the highlights of our Washington Island visit. We made a stop on a Saturday in June and encountered a decent amount of visitors, but this clear, smooth-stoned beach is a must visit location if you come to the island. There seemed to be ample parking, and while we weren't there to picnic, there seemed to be plenty of places to sit and enjoy the space. Do not come expecting to take some of the rocks home. Rock hounding is highly discouraged and violators face a hefty $250 fine.

What an amazing hidden beach! Local bartender suggested it, and it was the best stop on the island. The clearest water, and most beautiful beach I've ever seen. Gets deep fast, but water is so clear you can see the bottom even when it gets 15-20ft deep. Crystal clear and beautiful white stone beach. I can't say enough to describe how beautiful this beach was.
