Freiburg has two surviving medieval city gates: Martinstor and Schwabentor, both originally part of the city's 13th-century fortifications.
Martinstor, the older of the two, was significantly modified in the early 1900s with Neo-Gothic additions that gave it its current height and clock tower.
Schwabentor was similarly enlarged in the 20th century. It features a mural depicting a Swabian merchant who, according to legend, tried to buy Freiburg with sacks of salt.
