"Manchester is a city of firsts: the first modern industrial city, first place the atom was split, home to the first digital computer. It’s a legacy that’s left the city with many old warehouses and a ton of scientific devices and machines that need exhibiting. The Science and Industry Museum, inside what was originally the railway terminus of the first inter-city railroad, uses these objects to bring to life the stories that created the modern world. One of the most exciting exhibits is “Baby,” the room-sized computer from 1948 that was the progenitor for our modern Digital Age. Built by academics at the University of Manchester, “Baby” can now be seen in action when demonstrations are given by volunteers on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. In addition to the demonstrations, kids and adults are encouraged to explore and get hands-on with the other experiments, inventions, and innovations. It’s even got a mini steam train and a carousel. Entry is free, and the museum is open daily between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM." - MATADOR_NETWORK

Love Gets Sweeter Wedding and Family Videography

I can't wait for the rest to reopen when they're ready but there's still plenty to enjoy at the MOSI with kids. From the half term exhibitions like Power Up and special one off shows, talks and demos, there's always something new to explore. We also love the cafe and think it's delicious and great value. My kids love it here and I'm even happen to endure an awful northern rail train service for an hour to get here 🤣

Before I came, I expected the exhibition hall to provide some modern technology displays, but it turned out that the exhibition was more child-oriented. Families can have fun with their children all day long, and parents can spend a pleasant afternoon with them. In addition to family love, it is also very suitable for couples to relax. In short, it is a recommended attraction.

It's fine for a free museum (suggested donations). It's more geared towards kids rather than adults. If you are an adult and can catch the tour on the textile section it's very well worth it, otherwise the second floor is just filled with fun little games geared towards kids.

This is a fascinating museum that interactively shows how science and technology have changed the world. The old steam engines, locomotives, and early computers are incredibly impressive. It's a great place for people of all ages who want to learn something new and have a good time.

We came for the Power up part of the museum which was - as expected really fun and well curated. However the rest of the museum was also great and the staff and explainers were really enthusiastic. I especially enjoyed the part about textiles which is better than at Birmingham museums. The cafe gets really crowded at holidays and weekends so avoid if possible - lots of other choices nearby.

The Science and Industry Museum is a must-see when you're in Manchester, and here’s why: First off, there are some amazing 'firsts' to check out, like the very first computer, "Baby", and how the textile industry got its start right here in Manchester. You'll be blown away by these incredible exhibits! On the first floor, there are fun scientific games that everyone can enjoy—perfect for both adults and kids. And you definitely won't want to miss the display on Stephen Hawking! It highlights his groundbreaking work and shares some personal stories that really bring his genius to life. Best of all, the museum is right in the heart of Manchester, super easy to get to, and it's completely free! So, make sure to stop by when you're in the city. You won’t regret it!

This is the best museum for all ages. Truly epitomizes how Manchester played a crucial role in development of science and tech. Visit here for a fun filled day with live demos, activities on top floor , see machines, textiles, understand how life evolved during these times … and a gift shop too plus a cafe. It is free to enter.

What a fun and well organised museum! So much to see and do, lots to keep children of all ages entertained. Free to enter but an additional charge for extra exhibits such as the 'Game Up' offering. We paid extra for this and it was well worth it, a huge history of Computers and gaming to interact with. Plus a massive selection of games to play at will. The variety of games from Disney, interactive, VR, 2 person games and 4 person games plus a great section of new games by young designers were well set out and maintained with help available if needed. Such a fun day out!
