The staff was very nice. The bedroom was clean and the bed comfortable. There *is* a pool, which is nice in theory. Finding a place to sit was unfortunately a daily challenge. Now, about the ambiance: during our stay, the pool area resembled a summer camp without supervision. Children ran unchecked while their parents fully embraced the "vacation" part — mostly by drinking excessively and yelling across the pool. The adults seemed to prefer yelling, day-drinking, and generally treating the space like their own private resort. It’s amazing how little adult supervision can coexist with so much adult shouting. It would’ve been lovely if hotel staff had maintained a bit more presence or oversight in the pool area. On the plus side, parking was ample, which we really appreciated. All in all, the overall atmosphere really depends on who else happens to be staying at the time.

We just love this hotel! Front desk agents treat us like family! The common areas are nice and contemporary. The room was comfortable and clean! The convenience to everything we needed while on our trip was perfect for what we needed! My husband and I really enjoyed the complimentary coffee and tea offered in the lobby!

We enjoyed our stay at SCP! The rooms were tight but enough space in the bathroom with a shelf. The toilet had a heated seat that was fun. We wished there was room inside for a little table or desk (ours had the TV on it). The facilities were nice with a fun pool area and a game room. We also utilized the washers and dryer after a long hiking day!

The hotel incorporates plants between the rooms leaving a nice nature feel to the stay. The view from the rooms and the lobby of the ocean is lovely. The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. The facilities are well maintained: solid pool, nice workout area, and game area. I was concerned about noise from the nearby airport but it wasn't a problem at all.

The room was very quiet. We stayed in a handicap facility. The beds were amazing. Some of the best sleep we’ve ever gotten! Reeds Bay, which is right across the street is beautiful. The turtles and wildlife are gorgeous. Very relaxing, peaceful stay. All of the locals were super friendly and helpful.

Decent but dated building. Staff was mostly helpful and responsive. Room was clean although the one inch gap around the air conditioner allowed a few flies (they called them termite flies) to enter the room. They have bikes and paddleboards for guests to use which was a nice perk. The pool area was also a comfortable area to sit and relax. Parking can be limited.

This hotel received many positive reviews. I am not exactly sure why. The front desk people were nice, but the room was definitely not worth the $250 we paid. It was very small, old, dark with a tiny bathroom that was run down. The refrigerator didn’t work well. Maybe if we had paid half the amount I would feel differently.

Google
Picturesque, old school Hawaii hotel with lots of value added upgrades. Lots of ramps for wheelchair or difficulty walking. Glass jalousies on the windows are the traditional solution for capturing the cooling breezes in Hawaii. However, they do nothing for sound dampening. We were supposed to be in the quiet wing but could hear every conversation of guests passing by, and we discovered that the hotel is under the flight path of the airport. Service is fine. We had a problem with the shower leaking water onto the floor and out of the bathroom. Nicely decorated. Beautiful use of wood in the room and a gorgeous pedestal table in the lobby. I think the reality is that there's not much better in Hilo.

Yelp
Our stay at scp hilo was wonderful! It's such a calm eco friendly hotel, loved it's vibe. Every corner and corridor is designed to be cozy has cushions, lounge chairs, books to read, games. It's way more than what you expect out of a hotel. It's one of the best stays in Hawaii to be honest, it was better than some of the resorts. It's not very huge but it has nice decent pool. It has a very calm and refreshing vibe. They also offer free, hot chocolate, coffee, kombucha, filter water. the best part was there very eco-friendly they did daily housekeeping everything was super Duper clean and well maintained in our room. The only Con I would say was the washroom was little bit tiny compared to what we generally like. there concept was that of Japanese toilet I think it is the only hotel in US that had a jet spray which was a pleasant surprise, and it was not only that, but it had all the Fancy things in the toilet like changing the seat temperature water pressure inclination, etc was fun. We really loved our stay there. I also found a very nice book which I bought after coming back so yeah it was a great hotel. It also has a co working space if you need to have some business work. very nice location will definitely return to this and we get to BI again.

Yelp
My stay @ the SCP aka Soul Community Planet Hilo Hotel was AHHMAZINGGGG! Let me tell you why it was AMAZING, keep reading! The commute from the Hilo Airport was a cheap Uber/Lyft fee and I got from point A - B in about 5-10 minutes! Upon arrival there was Reeds Bay Beach Park, walkable distance from the hotel and Coconut Grill which is an Onolicious restaurant connected to the hotel! The entrance/main lobby of the hotel had views for days, filled with comfortable chairs, couches, water dispenser, bikes, a store that had drinks/snacks/misc items for guests to purchase, local music playing in the background which made the experience very homie and warm filled with Aloha. I was greeted and assisted by Ili, she made the check in process very easy and was very informational about the endless amenities, how SCP is eco friendly and helps the less fortunate which I LOVED and the restaurants near the hotel as well - she was AWESOME! And I also got a complimentary room upgrade without asking which is a PLUS! Amenities, where do I even Start - there is a beautiful mural and art all around the hotel, a gym to workout, a scenic pool with an area that has chairs and music to lounge in, a peaceful room to relax/play games/do yoga etc., massage room, again as mentioned earlier within the front entrance you may fill your bottle up with water, bikes to go biking etc. Poolside King Room was Magnificent! Walking distance near the pool, very modern with the hotel feel, Huge King Bed w/4 Pillows, desk space to work at, tv, lamps, closet space with a refrigerator, hair dryer, iron, the bathroom and air conditioner - lots of space to move around and very Comfy! The Staff at SCP Hilo were very admirable, happy and respectful to me and all of the guests! I know that they love their jobs, management and servicing the guests at the hotel! This hotel is doing many things right, and I am All For It *Clapping Hands*! I will definitely be back to take a longer vacation in Hilo while staying here @ the SCP Hilo Hotel! A Hui Ho, Till We Meet Again.

Yelp
This hotel may not be for everyone. For our trip it was very good and the best accomondation option for us in Hilo. The Good - The SPC is in a great location for visiting Volcano National Park. It is an easy 35-40 minute drive. The SPC is also close to waterfalls, botanic gardens and a short drive to downtown Hilo. There is a beautiful Japanese garden within walking distance and also a really nice walking path along the bay. There are coffee shops and good places to eat also within walking distance. The hotel is basically a converted eco friendly motel. There is plenty of free and secure parking, something not easy to find in Hawaii. Our room was clean and spacious enough. We had 3 adults in a two bed room. The bathroom was tight but not problematic. I am 6 feet tall and had zero issues. The rooms have in wall AC. This wasn't an issue for us as the the November nights were cool and we used the quiet and charming wooden overhead fan. Our room was on the first floor and we had a very nice pool view. The pool is quite nice and serene and so are the gardens. Our beds were comfortable. Complimentary coffee and filtered water are given in the lobby. They also have bikes and paddle boards available. There are events on different days. When we arrived there was a really good female singer playing the ukulele. The Not So Good - As others have written, the hotel is within 1/2 mile of Hilo Airport and on a main road. It can be loud. If one is a light sleeper, the SPC is probably not for you. We were early risers to get to Volcano National Park or other attractions so it did not bother us. The SPC is not a high end resort, it is mid range plus hotel. It didn't have the price either of a high end resort. We would return to the SPC hotel if we ever got back to Hilo. We loved the Big Island and Hilo was a really nice contrast to the Kona area. Both areas have a unique charm and vibe.

Yelp
The old Hilo Seaside Hotel on the corner of Kalanianaole Highway and Banyan Drive, across Reed's Bay prime location central to Hilo staples like Ken's and The Ponds Restaurants. The hotel itself consists of buildings with a central tropical courtyard or the swimming pool. Small gym, bikes to borrow, a mediation and common area. The room was clean and cozy. Much effort made in reducing carbon footprint by having the ability to open windows instead of only air conditioning. **note to management, please ask your cleaning staff to keep their voices down as their yelling between rooms are NOT conducive to sleeping in or quiet time.

Yelp
Very nice and helpful receptionists. The place is clean, calmed and beautiful with a nature relaxing atmosphere. However, room walls and windows look super old. Noise gets through very easily. Rooms have been renovated and are nicely decorated but you can still feel the old and the job on some of the renovations is very poor. I thought it would be right on the water but it's actually across the street from the water. Place is decent and we had a pleasant stay, just wish it was by the water and nicer rooms with better renovations that would make it look more expensive.

Yelp
You will be woken up all night from planes flying to/from the Hilo airport. You will also be woken up by the cars driving by. Then, when you check out, you will be charged $88.47 for hidden fees/charges they don't tell you about. Horrible. Wish we stayed ANYWHERE else

Yelp
Worst Choice Hotel! Dump! Rude customer service Overcharges Bait n Switch! Fake Reviews Bed Bugs Cockroaches Unsafe Unprofessional Condemned By Health Inspectors No water No maintenance mold no privacy similar to being in county without the orange jumpsuits Combative negative staff that purposefully lock u out of the room. For laughs Purposefully don't want u to have a relaxing stay by placing people in ur group at opposite ends of Motel No elevators no amenities no bellman no nothing that they promised like free bikes and yoga The front desk told me I can still do yoga on my own Well ya duh! Don't advertise free bikes free yoga as opposed to Kauai shores in Kauai on the beach locally owned clean maintained rooms with yoga for free free bikes not two not favorites only ride bikes for free Have u seen the work out room ? Don't blink u will miss it! In fact u should have missed this hotel completely Kauai shores rents at $240 a night on the beach not in an alley Kauai shores locally owned LIVE music every night jamming modern bar beach side dining with delicious food and free bikes (30 free bikes not two) free yoga classes w certified instructors on the beach at 8am everyday and a restaurant (how can u call urself a hotel? That's a disgrace to the word hotel) U have none of these amenities and charge $150 more per night than Kauai Shores without providing anywhere near the value and U have unsanitary conditions that are reminiscent of prisoner of war Worst hotel on Big Island and probably the world

Yelp
We were pleasantly surprised by this hotel. At first glance from the outside we weren't so sure but ended up loving it. The inside is really nice and new looking. They offer free complementary kombucha, coffee/hot chocolate/tea. The beds were really comfortable too. The pool and pond with koi fish were a huge hit for the kids. They have paddle boards and bikes for you to use for free anytime.

Yelp
There are 3 hotels in Hilo: Hilo Hawaiian, Doubletree (Grand Naniloa), and SCP Hilo. I've stayed at all three so when you compare SCP against the other 2 hotels, it falls short. However, I don't think it's fair to compare this hotel to the others because this property was formerly a motel type of place that's been recently upgraded. It's a small boutique hotel and it's fine. You have a two story walk up in one (Hukilau) section, and then just a one story building with a pool in the middle (kinda gives a Melrose Place, the tv show, vibe). No elevators, valet, bell boys, spa or room service here. Everything is pretty much self serve, which was fine for what we needed. PARKING You can park on the street along the pond, or there's a lot in the back. Do not park on the street closest to the koi pond in the area that has "no parking" signs. CHECK IN Staff is super helpful and friendly. Complimentary coffee at front desk. Water filter/dispenser is available in lobby. Lobby is nice and peaceful with hammock chairs overlooking the koi pond. POOL When we went, there was a raging kids birthday party at the pool with tons of kids and people. I don't know if they rented it out as a venue or if all those people were actually hotel guests, but they had a table with food and snacks and cake and everything. It was super loud and if you get a room surrounding the pool, you will hear it. I saw one lady complaining that her room was not a "peaceful room" as described on the website. She was furious and it was hilarious watching her. FYI This is not the Ritz Carlton! There's going to be some daytime noise if you're around the pool. NOISE Speaking of noise. Look at the map, this hotel is next to .... the airport. Hilo is not a big airport but big planes with engines fly here, starting around 5:55a or so lol. If you want a really quiet room, the Doubletree Grand Naniloa has ocean front suites for $$$$ that are super quiet, you can't even hear the coqui frogs in that room. Or just get earplugs and anticipate the noise. Or just wake up when that first plane comes in and go outside and walk, it's such a pretty area of Hilo. FITNESS CENTER It's a small room with 2 peloton bikes and dumbbell weights plus an area to work out. No treadmill or machines. It's okay. If you want to run just go outside and run the loop. RESORT FEE $10 I wouldn't call this a resort. But there is a $10 daily fee for all the amenities which I think is fair. Parking, coffee, water, paddleboard rental, pool, use of the gym, lounge areas. ROOMS The rooms are small but have enough. Ours had 2 full size beds, a desk, a refrigerator, and a bathroom. All the essentials for an overnight stay. No complaints. Pillow was kind of wimpy but I slept. RESTAURANTS There's a restaurant next to this place called Coconut Grill, but we walked to Ken's Pancake House. There are a few eateries within walking distance but you really do need a car to see Hilo. Would I stay here again? Yes. Just adjust your expectations of this place and it's a great location and the place itself is newly upgraded. If you want a big hotel, this is not it, but if you want a smaller boutique hotel, this place is great.

Yelp
Don't stay here. The service is horrible with passive-aggressive staff. --Find another spot on Banyan Way where the understand at least a tad about Aloha.

Yelp
Public areas are well presented. The rooms are lacking. We had a king room with a 13" monitor. Bathrooms so tiny your legs hit the door when seated on the toilet. The mini fridge leaked water and the window AC was super loud. No sitting in the room beyond the bed. Oddly enough only half the room had furniture.

Yelp
First off, super friendly staff. Very welcoming, informative, and kind. The facility itself must be pretty old, but it has been refurbished with modern touches. For example, there are bikes and paddleboard's available for a day use (first come first serve). There are two pelotons in the gym. They offer meditation and other activities by the pool. Guests are even given samples of kombucha upon check-in. There aren't a lot of new hotel/resort options available in Hilo. The vibe here sit somewhere between a nice hostel and motel. Our unit 110 was tucked in the corner, so maybe not as loud as the ones right next to the pool however, noise travels pretty easily throughout the nearby rooms. Cleanliness of the room, linens, and bathroom were acceptable. The parking lot is tight and choppy in some spots. At over $250 per night in the off-season, I don't find this to be an incredible value. We needed a place to stay close to Hilo airport, and this served the purpose
google avatar

Yelp
Would not recommend for anyone who values quiet and flexibility. After a long day of travel the staff would not allow any early check in until 3pm on the dot unless we paid extra. Then we tried to rest in a room with zero sound insulation from the pounding rain on the roof, people walking through halls, and airplanes over head. The pretty common areas and (some) friendly staff were nice, but not enough to make up for the unrestful accommodations that were not cheap.

Yelp
Excellent hôtel near the park and lagoon. There are tasty restaurants, cafes, and stores nearby. There is a golf course also close to the hotel. The hotel provides free coffee and filtered water. The pool is also nice. The staff is extraordinary and they go out of their way to make you happy. I would stay at SCP Hilo again and the price is right. They also have complimentary bikes and Paddle boards that you can use.

Yelp
I'd give this place 10 stars if I could. From the moment you arrive at the hotel it's impressive. The attention to detail is refreshing and makes your stay so memorable. It's IMMACULATE! The staff are generous and helpful. The lobby is peaceful and serene. I've never hung out in a hotel lobby as much as on this trip. The pool is perfect, the rooms are cute and comfortable. The amenities are incredible- a nice gym, paddle boards and bicycles are included- as well as 24/7 fresh coffee and filtered water dispensers in the lobby. Laundry room. Omg. I never want to leave this place. The location is perfect too- across the street from the most beautiful park and bay. You'll NEVER GET BORED HERE. This is officially my husband and I's Big Island place to stay.

Yelp
I WANT to rate this place a 4 but it's just not quite there. This hotel has a lot of potential. The pool was great for my 10 year old, looks very zen but there's a lot of airplane noise. (Right next to runway). The staff was 5 stars, so friendly and helpful! The lobby is very cute but that doesn't translate to the rooms. They have nice art work, nice ceiling fans and that's about it. Possibly one of the loudest hotels I've ever stayed at. Could hear every neighbor all night, and everything from outside due to the jalousie windows. called down for an extra pillow and was told "we're out of pillows". The bathrooms were pretty bad, ours looked like it was still under construction. Overall great location to food, nice views and the airport, GREAT STAFF. Bad rooms.

Yelp
SCP is the PERFECT place to stay when visiting Hawaiʻi Island. Right in the heart of hilo, they offer such a unique laid back experience and was perfect for our time in Hilo. They had stand up paddle boards and bikes for free use!

Yelp
Spent a night here in January. Overnight trip from Kona. Had friend who has mobility issues so needed two rooms and walk in shower. We picked this place because they could fill our bill. Older, place. Very cute and clean. We enjoyed our overnight stay here. Would do it again. Plenty of parking. Not a typical resort hotel . More like a boutique place. Prices reasonable. Would do again.

Yelp
Drove to Hilo from Kona and didn't feel like driving back after a long day. SCP Hilo Hotel had the right accommodation at the right price! We called as we were having dinner, contemplating whether we should call around for a room or just suck it up and head back. This was the second place we tried (after Pakalana Inn, since it was closest to the restaurant we were at) and, to our surprise, they had a room available for a very reasonable price! The receptionist was welcoming, helpful and friendly. She hooked us up within minutes and we were able to enjoy our dinner. Upon check in, we noticed that the hotel was under new management. We've stayed here before, but there was a new energy and modern flare. We were greeted right away and checked in within minutes. There was a coffee/tea and kombucha bar in the front, along with resources for entertainment and classes offered by the hotel, including 'ōlelo Hawai'i. As we walked through the halls to our room, we noticed new lighting, the modern decor, and well-manicured grounds. The room was clean, contemporary, and refreshing! Whoever took over management did a great job incorporating Hawaiian culture and education into the experience! Hulō!

Yelp
Really a good experience during certain hours. NOISY. And I mean NOISY. IF PEACE US WHAT YOU SEEK THIS IS THE LAST SPOT. many many locals cruise, and this is where they do it. They have loud Harley Davidsons in groups at all hours. They have incredibly noisy, big loud diesel pick up trucks and hot rods. They appear to really enjoy revving up and raising hell on this strip that runs DIRECTLY in front of the hotel. Then there's always the fact that the runway approach for the Hilo Airport flies directly overhead of the hotel until about 9:13 PM. The rooms are newly refurbished Some of the views are exceptional, lovely Koi pond, super easy to use pay- by-phone-app laundry facilities, a beautiful pool, conveniently located for walking, exercise, waterssports, etc. Other than a snarky Front Desk check in experience the property was a fair value for the price.

Yelp
There is not a single thing that I can say I didn't like about this boutique hotel. Newly remodeled, light airy and themed for wellness that I totally felt. Surprised about some of these reviews as we didn't experience one single thing that would not warrant a 10* review. This reservation was made for us as we were in town for work and didn't know prior where we would be staying so I didn't even have a chance to check reviews. Glad I didn't so I could make my own assessment. We were there at the very end of September 2023 and from the moment that we arrived we we welcomed and felt sincere aloha. The lobby was light an airy, big opened windows and doors immediately gave us the relaxing vibe we needed after a long travel day. Check in was fast and easy. We got a room overlooking the koi pond that actually has a variety of different fish and the ocean view, just WOW.... ! Our room was beyond clean and fresh! The linens and towels were crisp and spotless! We had all we needed, hair dryer, iron & board, fridge, shampoo, conditioner and lotion provided was ohhh so delicious smelling! Lighting was perfect, loads of places to charge our phones and electronic's, and easy to use TV remote. The bed was SUPER comfy and after 10pm complete silence! That evening they had live music in the lobby that I was able to take in and enjoy from my room. The grounds are beautifully landscaped, the art and decor, like a spa! Got up early with the time change for me and went to the lobby (4am) to see if there might be tea or coffee and yes! There was and it was fresh and delicious! Staff was present and they greeted me warmly. I also love that they support local charity's and are very environmentally aware and conscience. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
A gem location to stay at while visiting Hilo. Wholeheartedly thankful to stay here while on vacation.

Yelp
Someone call Nev Schulman and Max Joseph cause i've been catfished!! If you haven't seen that show, I would say watch it in the hotel room, but there's just a teeny tiny TV. While the outside decor is quite pleasing to the eye, it stops when you open your room door, if Hollywood needs a hotel room to shoot a crime scene in, this is the one! While the front was very kind, clearly they hadn't slept in the rooms. The "windows" are see through even when closed and you can hear every one up at night talking! Stayed for one night and sure payed the price for it. This place was expensive and definitely not what is advertised.

Yelp
Extremely enjoyable. Kiana and Amanda along with the rest of the staff made me feel right at home. Great location with plenty of parking. Bathrooms looked renovated recently, a/c worked well, and the bed was very comfortable. The fishpond and landscaping are beautiful creating a tranquil ambiance and atmosphere. The SCP is definitely my favorite hotel in Hilo and look forward to staying there again next time I travel to the Big Island.

Yelp
This place isn't for everyone, but I LOVED it. The main best part are the workers, the best of local culture, so no, not your superficial scripted mainland high end hotel nonsense. This place is Aloha. The workers here like working with each other, they like working at this hotel, they are proud of where they live. They understood my sadness that I was eating at the restaurant that invented the Loco Moco for the last time because they were closing their doors. I absolutely love the slat style tropic windows they have and the garden and the local decor. I love the grotto area across the road where locals play every day. I didn't go in their restaurant because right across the highway is the best Vietnamese restaurant and walking distance from Verna's and Ken's House of Pancakes is nearby too. The noise of the nearby airport or the many children playing nearby never bothered me, I found this place to be peaceful in all senses of that word. It's not luxurious, but it is lovely. Free fresh drinking water and fresh hot coffee in the lobby. The other side of the island has the kind of hotels that might be more your style if you're looking for vacation luxury and you want to minimize your exposure to local culture.

Yelp
Unfortunately, the SCP decided to cut back on the initial offerings which made it worth the extra dollars spent. The price has gone up, substantially. The espresso in the lobby was wonderful. The beds seemed really uncomfortable; and pillows lack support. Lamps were cheaply made and worn (IKEA) and ready to be replaced. Front desk staff lost the original Aloha spirit that use to imbue the spirit of the original Ohana that use to own the Seaside. Please reconsider how to more forward. Revisit the origins of the Seaside and pay close attention to your kamaaina who frequent the place.

Yelp
Great staff. If your room is in the back, lots of walking. Pool isn't heated. Room was clean. AC is loud, that bothered me more than the planes or cars that others mentioned. Room was clean. Good location.
google avatar

Min K.

Yelp
It's not bad, but it's not good. Like most patrons that wrote before me, if you are sensitive to sound stay away. The walls are paper thin and so are the doors. It also doesn't help that the windows are jalousies so sound will almost always find its way in. In addition, gps doesn't help as it takes you to the back by Verna's! If it's any consolation and you decide to stay here, find your way to Banyan Tree Drive and make a left and then park in the lot there or on the side of the road. I also found a cockroach (RIP) on its back in the bathroom with hair (that is not mine) all over the wall and shower wall. :(
google avatar

Anthony H.

Yelp
The hotel itself was not bad. Knowing what I know now, i would recommend staying in a different area. I was on the first floor right across from the swimming pool. It's perfect if you want anything but quiet. The slat glass panel for windows do not block out much noise so you hear quite a bit of what is going on around your room. The construction to the roadway directly outside of my room, did not make matters any better. It was anything but relaxing/peaceful. Otherwise, the hotel was very clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Great location for easy access to multiple beaches and waterfalls. I had an opportunity to meet an amazing "local" lady by the name of Nohea-Lani, but everyone refers to her as "Auntie." She hosted a lei making class in the lobby one morning. She was a fountain of information regarding the Island's history and the Ti Leaves we used for the leis. She has so much pride and passion for her culture and it's traditions, and she was so willing to share it with us all. If you are fortunate enough to meet this amazing lady, it's so worth talking to her. ...and she will show you how to make a lei.

Yelp
I booked this hotel only reading Google reviews and I wish I saw the Yelp reviews before booking to help give me a better idea of what to expect from the hotel. Staff: 5/5 everyone is super helpful and friendly. The hotel is a bit of a maze if you're assigned a room towards the back. We were looking at the signs and a staff member directed us to our building. Check-in and Check-Out: 5/5 The online option is very convenient. I used the chat feature to request early check-in and I received a response very quickly. You do have to pay for early check-in. Room: 2/5 Conveniently, there were no pictures on their website showing the box AC unit in the rooms. I'm assuming it didn't fit the aesthetic of the renovated rooms. The unit is noisy, on top of the airplane noise (I didn't see any Google reviews about the air plane noise). It was my mistake to book a hotel so close to the airport. I made the assumption a hotel charging $200+ would take the noise pollution into account. The windows are jalousie type and you can hear people walking to their rooms, doors closing, etc. There is no exhaust fan in the restroom, and the toilet is so close to the door I'm not sure a bigger adult could fit comfortably. The room was clean, and the shower had good water pressure. Amenities: 3/5 Yes, the pool is nice. The ability to use the bicycles and paddle boards are convenient. The fit space was advertised as a "state of the art" fitness space - with two Peloton bikes, one TRX suspension trainer, dumbbells, and yoga mats. Location: 4/5 It is very close to conveniences. Target, Wal Mart, and restaurants are a short drive away. Local breakfast places, and lunch stops are a short walk away. Very close to the airport, which can be a pro for some customers.

Yelp
This place is a glorified motel with bare minimum decor and a pad on your bed that will not be in the same place that it started on the day you arrived. If you are sensitive to any noise, do not stay here. There is absolutely no built in sound barrier here. You will hear people next door taking a shower. You will hear them talking. You will hear the dog in the room next door barking at 7am. Worst of all, you will hear the extremely loud planes taking off and the extremely loud cars showing off their mufferless engines. Then they will surprise you with a $10 amenity charge that they do not show when booking. They purposefully hide this fee as it is NOT listen in the taxes and fees when you go to book and instead they hide it in the "terms and conditions" which is extremely shady. I had to argue with them and complain about my stay in order to get it removed. Lastly, the "beach" it's near is a joke for a beach. Save your money and aggravation and stay far away from this town and go to Kona.

Yelp
Firstly, Hilo is my favorite spot on the Islands (not that I've been everywhere), a charismatic and handsome little town, still not demoralized by tourism. I came here twenty years ago and I was worried that it might have been ruined, not so. There are only a few places to stay, none fancy, and I would highly recommend the SPC Hilo Hotel, which is reasonably priced by Hawaiian standards. The gardens are gorgeous, trimmed to perfection by gardeners worthy of a botanical gardens. The coffee at the front desk is like that of a New York deli. The place has a spiritual, Buddhist, sustainable vibe with several common rooms and solar panels and that's refreshing, though I don't like that SCP stands for Soul Community Planet, which sounds like AI-produced word association. If you don't have a car, there are plenty of spots to walk or bike to, as the hotel is located on Banyan Drive and is a stroll from the Japanese Gardens. The Coconut Grill next door is the Liliʻuokalani of breakfast spots. I read another review and you are stuck with a motel-style noisy air conditioner, so that's something to keep in mind based on when you are planning to be here. We were in Hilo in October and I didn't want to leave.

Yelp
What a beautiful hotel with a warm, welcoming vibe! While visiting family in Hilo, we heard about this hotel from folks on our OK Farms eco tour. We went to Coconut Grill for breakfast the next day and discovered the hotel was right next door. We walked through the gorgeous hotel lobby to check it out. Everyone was so warm & welcoming! They told us about their cultural happy hour the next evening and invited us to stop by. We did, and enjoyed the treat of hearing a local musician playing soft rock with a Hawaiian flair in the open air lobby as dusk arrived. Our Mom Genie is part of a local hula halau, and the musician graciously let her share a dance while he played and sang. He even played requests when we jokingly asked for Hotel California! The charcuterie spread was gorgeous and accompanied by a fresh draft of kombucha, if desired. The lobby is relaxing and gorgeous. We saw art by local artists that reflects the SCP credo of sustainability and honoring the local culture. Guests can use the hotel bicycles and paddle boards right across the street at the Reeds Bay Beach Park. Coconut Island is a bike ride away and there's a nice little cove for swimming, with clean bathrooms and outdoor showers across the park. Ponds Restaurant and Coconut Grill are decent restaurants within walking distance. Shopping, spas and the Hilo Farmers Market, which includes local crafts, are not far away. We will definitely recommend SCP Hilo to folks visiting the area.

Yelp
Room was mostly clean, staff was nice, looks like they are eco friendly, they are in the process of doing some renovations, nice water filter in the lobby, microwave in the lobby, complimentary coffee and tea in the lobby, plain room but it was a somewhat cheaper room so we decided to stay here. Sadly, ROACHES. Yes, we left a few Malasadas in our room and we returned to 15 German roaches on it when we came back. It was terrible. I killed them while my wife was horrified. It was late and we were exhausted, if not we would have either moved rooms or hotels. I hope they get that under control because that was a deal breaker.

Yelp
Stayed for 2 days as part of our Hawaii vacation. Very nice location with a great view of Hilo Bay. The hotel itself is in need of some TLC. The room was spacious and comfortable but worn and should be updated. Parking and check in were easy. The included ( for one) continental breakfast was of a poor quality. Coffee , juice, runny oatmeal and a minimal selection of fruit and danish. You can get a decent breakfast in the dining room. Apparently if you skip the continental breakfast you can get a discount but we were not told this until it was too late. A final note, they only service the rooms every other day.

Yelp
I absolutely loved our time at SCP Hilo. Hopped over from O'ahu for a few days and couldn't have picked a better place to stay. The staff was so kind, warm, and welcoming from the moment we entered. They were quick to check us in and help get us settled - loved the welcome Kombucha on tap, that was a very nice touch :) they provided a map and got us oriented with the workout/yoga room, pool, office/study space, and hotel rooms! The rooms were simple, but clean, comfortable, and tastefully decorated. Just what we needed! To be honest with everything the hotel has to offer (pool, free paddle board and bike rentals, lei-making classes, etc) most people probably don't spend much time in the rooms anyway. Unfortunately I was here for work, so didn't get to take advantage of all the hotel amenities that I wanted to this trip. Fortunately, that means I will need to come back again! The thing that I loved the MOST about SCP Hilo is their commitment to their community, the environment, and preserving Hawaiian culture. Not only does SCP practice sustainability within the hotel (reusable shampoo/body wash containers, filtered water bottle fill station, etc), they also support environmental and global health through the Hawai'i Wildlife Fund. SCP makes a point to support their local farmers, businesses, and community efforts as well, and provide enriching opportunities for guests to experience authentic Hawaiian hospitality and culture through cultural events like live music, lei-making, etc. I would recommend SCP for this alone! Having a wonderful staff, great location near the water, and all the other amenities is just the icing on the cake ;) 11/10 recommend SCP Hilo!!! Can't wait to bring my friends and ohana back!

Yelp
Honestly it was great! We're from Oahu and just wanted to pop over to Hilo for a night and everything was clean, cozy, loved the balcony, and perfect for a quick getaway. I recommended them on to my folks who live in Chicago for their next week stay because it's in a great location.

Yelp
This boutique hotel was a lifesaver!! We had originally planned to stay at the double tree nearby that was so terrible we cancelled our reservation and stumbled across this hotel. It was very clean, had live music, small pool but it was cute. You can tell they are spending money to improve the building and give it some TLC.. maybe they'll upgrade the windows, you can hear everything. Hotel staff was nice as well

Yelp
It calls itself a hotel but it's really a motel that someone put lipstick on. I like the open concept of this property, but that's the extent of my liking. This is my first and maybe last time I will stay here. The hotel itself is small and located on a little street corner next to a cafe and across the street from the ocean with a nearby rock-island where swimmers can jump of off. The (first) problem is, many people like to fish off of that small street too. Just picture an off the beaten path (you'd miss it if you blinked) block that must accommodate a m/hotel, cafe patrons, and fishermen and swimmers? There's parking in the back, but that area looks sketchy, so be careful at night. You can get into the hotel from there instead of going the long way around the property to get to the lobby but it's not well. Be alert. There's only 1 pool and it's not kid friendly. It's a rectangular-shaped fairly-deep-pool with nowhere to just wade. The edge of the pool is flat so try relaxing as you try to to keep your fingers perpendicular to it in fear of slipping off. Bring floaties. At check in, the front desk suggested a room that was ready so we took it. It must have been on the unrenovated part of the m/hotel because construction workers were just taking naps on ledges in front of rooms and just chilling. I spent about 5 minutes in the room, then proceeded to race back to the lobby in tears because this was not anything like it was presented on its website. The second room we got was in a slightly better location but it was maze to navigate through. I was ready to leave, despite our 2-night reservation. I traveled all the way from Cali to Kona, then drove all the way to Hilo, hoping to be greeted by the paradise I counted down the days to be in. Instead, I was met by the modernly decorated Hawaiian Motel 6 lobby. I admit: The lobby is cool. But hard to enjoy with all the kids jumping off the rock and ppl catching marine life in buckets. And cars cruising with their the bass that jolts us all. Did I mention there's a cafe next door, too? Is this the entrance to peace, tranquility and paradise?! This is 1 of only 2 hotels in the area so they know we are at their mercy. I gave 2 stars for the cool looking, open concept lobby next to a koi pond with hammock chairs I am always a sucker for. I also like the little outdoor gaming area on the property where you can play board games. They also have luggage carts so that's a plus. But they should focus on the rooms more and make them feel a little less college dorm room and finish renovating the m/hotel. The TV...my kid looked at it and asked me if I was going to work cuz why is there a computer monitor on the dresser? I was able to sleep at night when I resolved to pretending I was glamping. And also pretending I reunited with the light blue, rough but filmy textured polyester blanket my parents donated to charity in 1980. Countdown to Kona part of the trip begins. I admit I am one of those people who did not think to check yelp, or checked yelp with a grain of salt. Maybe it's because I want to remain wearing blinders as I daydream in my countdown to paradise bubble the hotel and travel sites have help create in my head. It isn't until I've actually reached the " . . . vs. REALITY" part of my trip where I automatically regret dismissing the 1 and 2 star ratings. I survived this trip, but I've now joined the army of regret consisting of those whose only consolation is strength in (low rating) numbers and gathering to share battle stories.

Yelp
As I sit in the lobby sipping my espresso whilst overlooking the peaceful cove across the street I can't help but think this is what a perfect moment in Hawaii feels like. The sound of water dropping from the fountains in the Koi pond add a small harmony to the peaceful acoustics of Hawaiian music lightly playing in the lobby and the trees swaying in the wind with the birds in tow. From the first day to the last this hotel has become a crescendo of favorite moments and re-affirmations of why SCP Hilo was one of the best choices we made when staying in Hawaii. Location, Location, Location Hilo is the oldest city on the Big Island and is distinctively different from its western counter part of Kona. Smaller, less modern, and more rainforest like the mood is simple and calm. SCP Hilo's location to some might be considered not in the heart of Hilo. While it's true it is not in downtown Hilo it is only a five minute drive away from the thick of it. Not only that the location for it surrounds you with so many wonderful places within walking distance. The famous Ken's Pancake House is a five minute walk. The Hilo airport is within viewing distance. Not to mention the cove that leads to the ocean is just in front of the lobby. You couldn't do better even if you tried. Amenities Galore This hotel has some of the best amenities I've ever seen included within a hotel. Purified water can be found in the main lobby and at the pool area. The pool is gorgeous and wide with turquoise tiling and tranquil vibes throughout its space. With nothing to obstruct the sky above you can get epic sunset shots in the pool to make all your Instagram friends jealous. Bikes are free to rent. Having fatter wheels they are very smooth to ride in the diverse terrain of the island. Paddle boards are also free to use and since the cove is right across the hotel you can take it and simply walk over to start your adventure. They have samples of local kombucha you can try before you buy any bottles. Coffee in both regular and decaf are available in the mornings at the front desk. There is an espresso machine just to the side of the lobby that can make a multitude of different drinks from café mochas to cappuccinos. Again, all part of your stay here. One of our friends habitually drinks coffee and she was living her best life. Stylin' and Groovin' Currently SCP Hilo is going through renovations. When we first walked into the room we thought the place felt like a dorm. Textured ceilings, textured wall, old art work, and beds without headboards. But they are redoing all the rooms starting with the backside first and making their way upwards. But even without the renovation the pillows were plump, the beds were so comfortable, and the AC, though small, cooled the room down quickly. The parts they have fully renovated are magazine worthy designs. Both side lobby and main lobby are absolutely gorgeous. They are spaces that welcome you to hang with friends and enjoy the atmosphere. Hammocks hang from one side of the main lobby looking out to the koi pond and cove. Intricate woven lamp fixtures cradle Edison bulbs from above. The pool is easily the type any millionaire with taste would want in their home. The hotel makes every space comfortable and every nook welcoming. I've never been to a place where I've wanted to spend so much time in their public spaces but SCP got me crushing. The Comeback Airbnb's are the popular choices in travel. They provide privacy for travelers and a feeling of having a large space all to their own. But when you compare a hotel like SCP to almost any Airbnb you'll be hard to find any place that gives you so much, has such an amazing location, helpful staff, and welcomes you with the mana of the islands quite like SCP Hilo does. This will be my go to place whenever I visit the Big Island and I'll dream about hanging out in the low light of twilight here again. If you need a place to stay for your visit in Hilo SCP Hilo is your northern star.

Yelp
Hilo Seaside Hotel! I'm gonna do the usual "short but sweet" because you have to go experience these awesome individuals who represent this beautiful hotel and make it what it is!! Hospitality, compassion, and "Real Time" care, not the BS fake care that's going around nowadays!! That's it, go check them out!! It is what it is! The best!! Thank you Seaside, love all of you and keep up the smiles ok!! Aloha Randy!

Yelp
Nice, clean, near to all groceries but design is a bit outdated. We got a room with no outdoor chairs, not sure also how they assign rooms, we were a group of 5 and we were all the way in the back. Not sure if I'm coming back, pool is nice and garden that gives a bit of consolation. Room is pretty clean.

Yelp
I loved this hotel. Booked last minute ( when was in the lobby) so I didn't know all the amenities that came with this place. Why stay anywhere else when in Hilo? Lovely bay views, koi pond, Free paddle boarding and bikes, work out room with Peloton bikes and free weights Gorgeous pool area, in- lobby Coffee and espresso machine, Mini fridge in the room, Comfortable beds. Everyone on the hotel staff from checkin to cleaning attendants were very kind and friendly. If I HAD to pick something to complain about - no coffee maker in the room.

Yelp
I echo the other 5 star reviews- Great amenities, location and service! Not only spotless but unique and based off sustainable practices. True Hawai'i feeling hanging out at spots where the locals chill. Ola brewery is close by and has amazing beers and food, all locally sourced. More very special local food options, the Hilo market and multiple bodies of water to explore in addition to hikes in the lush green and solo tours through local caves/lava tubes. Spent a wk here and it certainly wasn't long enough. ¡Much appreciated, SCP! XOXO

Yelp
My wife and I visited Hilo for the first time and this hotel was recommended by a friend who visits the island frequently. I am so happy we stayed here. Front desk staff was really kind and welcoming. We had a view to pond and enjoyed the location. Nice restaurants to visit with in walking distance and they have a QR code for local recommendations. When I come to Hilo I will be staying here. We had a wonderful experience. Free water, tea and coffee. Only down side is no elevators and you will likely have to carry your luggage upstairs. They do have a ramp and first floor rooms.

Yelp
My friend and I planned to stay for 1 night, we ended up staying for 4 nights. It is clean, hip and best if all Megan works the front desk. We found Megan to be helpful in everyway possible and best if all she is a perfect example of "aloha". I highly recommend this establishment. I hope they begin a frequent guest program because we plan to visit once a month. Free bikes? free sups? Perfect.

Yelp
We've stayed here probably about a dozen times since we moved to Keaau 3 1/2 yrs. ago. People think we're crazy getting a hotel when living only 30 mins away. We enjoy going into Hilo browsing new areas, going out to dinner/cocktails without the worry of heavy traffic after drinking. This place was formerly Seaside hotel and much more affordable for frivolous fun nights out.. now as SCP and having made a few tasteful updates the rooms are about double the cost! The rooms still have the old school feel, they did add some nice touches though like new artwork on the wall, beautiful wood headboard, beautiful wood sitting table/chair and in small bathroom they enclosed the area under the sink and put in new toilets. The beds now are very low, nearly awkward but still comfortable. We noticed they no longer supply ice buckets yet offer the ice machine? I had to stop the cleaning gal to ask for a bag to get ice. She confirmed no ice buckets now. I noticed our waste baskets both in bathroom and main area didn't have liners? But overall it was basically the same as before and thankfully we got a good rate but was still about $150 with all the added fees. We used to pay $99-$135 plus fees. But they are actually charging upwards of $200 routinely now. I won't pay that, I'd rather stay at Hilo Hawaiian and have a gorgeous view/lanai for just few dollars more. The SCP perks are the now beautiful renovated pool and adjoining lounging area. It truly has a private resort feel. The other is the hotel restaurant which is our favorite for breakfast especially. It could use a facelift but always good service. The prices have increased there as well but unfortunately most places have reflected increases the past year or two. I wish they offered room service.... and allowed cocktails in covered lounge area near pool. The front desk/lobby area was also updated nicely. Enjoyed the addition of self serve coffee station. The location is great for strolling beautiful Banyon drive and across from the pond that feeds into the bay. There's picnic area/restrooms to grab a bite and sit and enjoy.
