3 Best Day Trips from Charleston, South Carolina | Condé Nast Traveler

"This leisurely carriage tour lasts just under an hour. It’s a professional set up with a homespun feel, perfect for small groups—the four rows of the carriages can fit eight people very comfortably. Guides are experienced and include details on local history, specifics of the Antebellum architecture styles, Civil War history, and even some natural history considering the tour takes place amid the evocatively southern Spanish Moss. The town’s historic homes are perhaps its most interesting feature. The entirety of the historic district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, and there are some  incredibly preserved homes, such as the Robert Smalls House and The Anchorage (which both date back to the late 18th century). There’s even older history on view at the Parish Church of St Helena, parts of which date back to 1712, and just slowly meandering along with trees on one side and the water on the other was delightful." - Paul Oswell

My husband and I enjoyed our romantic horse drawn carriage through t h e streets of Habersham. Enchanting and a beautiful date night. DEE And DARLA pulled us with grace and precision even when Santa came from one of the houses to give them carrots!! They must be on his Good list!! Our driver was extremely personable!

John F.

Google
Wonderful relaxing tour of old town Beaufort! Nicole was great, entertaining and very knowledgeable of the local area! The horses known as the girls Cat and Darla were sweet. We really enjoyed learning about this town!

Steve Y.

Google
Well worth it. DD and Darla know their way. Very interesting history and these homes are gorgeous. Our guide knows her history! 🤗

Although 4 in our group of 5 are residents of Bluffton and have been to Beaufort many times, this was our first carriage tour. We were fortunate to have Laurie as our guide and Bobby the horse leading us. Our time slot ended up only having our group of 5 on our carriage which was like a private tour. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and are kicking ourselves for not doing sooner. There was so much information we could take the tour several times and continue to capture new information about how Beaufort has so much historical significance. Highly recommend this tour and Laurie.

Google
We had such a great time on this historical tour! Tyler was our guide and did a phenomenal job! We have children as young as 10yrs old up to 18 yrs old and all said they loved it!!! 0ur family loves history and enjoyed learning about the Civil War history and all the other fun facts he shared. We would highly recommend this tour!

Google
We had the pleasure of riding with Ms Kathy and Mr Jasper on a chilly Saturday in February. You can really tell Kathy loves her home and her job. She did an amazing job with our tour. Loved all the history that was shared with us. We ended up getting back in our car after and going back to some places to take more pictures. We felt very comfortable with Jasper leading us around town. Loved and appreciated that the tour was started by letting us know how loved and well taken care of the horses are here.

Anthony L.

Google
We had a great time. The city and sights are beautiful. The tour guide was fun and funny. It was a visual history lesson and our guide made sure to point out important sites and area history.

Google
Great tour. Went with a local I was in town to visit. Even he learned some things about Beaufort history. Informative, interesting, and they definitely care about their animals. Would recommend if you want to get a good tour of the architecture and scenery and/or the history of Beaufort.

Edward O.

Yelp
We have lived here for 8 years and this is the first time we did the tour as we had relatives visiting. The tour was very informative and enjoyable. Our tour guide was excellent and provided us with history and information. I would not hesitate to recommend it and will do it again in the future.

Yelp
Sea Island Carriage Company provides tours of Downtown Beaufort. I liked that the carriage had stairs to make it easier to get on the carriage and that we all were provided head sets so that we could hear the tour guide. This tour did not cover as much of Downtown Beaufort as the other tour I took or provide as much history but it was fun and I learned different tidbits. Angus was the horse that took us around. The horses are well cared for and if it gets too hot in the summer the tours are stopped. I'd recommend this tour while in Beaufort.

Carol P.

Yelp
Wonderful tour around beautiful Beaufort. Kelsey and her horse Angus work so well together. She gave non stop commentary on the people, architecture and history of the area. Very interesting and informative. The weather was perfect and really enhanced this very enjoyable ride.

Yelp
We really loved the historic Carriage Tour we took! Our tour guide Sam, and our Clydesdale horse Mick Jagger, were great! We would highly recommend taking this tour to get a wonderful overview of the history of Beaufort.

Yelp
We were in town with our kids and wanted to show them around, so what better way than with a carriage ride. We got tickets, barely, as they often can't stay in operation into the afternoon once the temps get above a certain degree. Our carriage driver was wonderful, did a good job of telling the horse what to do while informing us all about Beaufort. We saw lots of neat places and afterwards walked around to some of them to get a better view. We saw in the back row of the carriage but they fortunately gave out headphones so we could hear better. I'd do this again.

Larry R.

Yelp
terrible service, we were alimony at the platform and the driver saw us and pulled away. we got left behind, this peop are horrible.

Yelp
Sam was the best tour guide! She kept us entertained while still being in control. Her love of 'Justin' was very obvious. She seemed to be very knowledgeable of the area and told us lots of tib bits of the history of Beaufort. Thank you for having Sam be a part of your crew!

Jane B.

Yelp
A beautiful day for a carriage ride through historic Beaufort. Our guide, Walker, was interesting and knowledgeable. it was like going back in time. As I drove in to Beaufort, I thought this place is beautiful. I may want to live here. After the carriage ride, I definitely don't want to return home. This carriage ride is a great way to learn about history and about the famous movies that were made there, It was time well spent. Thank you.

Laura S.

Yelp
We took my mom for a tour for her birthday and so glad we did! Sam was a wonderfully engaging and knowledgeable guide. We learned all about Beaufort's founding and early years through her witty storytelling. Angus, our horse was delightful and attentive. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and highly recommend!!

Whitney H.

Yelp
Sam was FANTASTIC!!! We took the tour yesterday and it was fascinating - and so relaxing. She is a student of history at U of SC and a wealth of knowledge. The horses are so well cared for and the whole experience was delightful. My dad and 1 year old twins had a blast. Thank you Sam!!!

Sharron H.

Yelp
Really enjoyed our carriage ride yesterday with friends. Kathy was wonderful with her presentation on the history of SC and Beaufort. Nugget the horse lead the way!

Yelp
We had Kate and Angus Friday 11am. Kate was funny, sweet and knowledgeable. Great tour. Different information than other tours we'd been on. I'd recommend this tour again and driver Kate. Also they did COVID protections pretty well with the clear plastic between rows but I wish they would require masks. Thanks

Yelp
We had a wonderful experience with Sea Island Carriage. We were able to meet the horse before our ride. We could pet him and take pictures with him. Our guide was very knowledgeable of the area and pretty funny to boot. Highly recommend this company.
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
My mom and I had so much fun on this carriage ride! It was nice to get a tour of the point early in the day so that we were able to go walk through in the afternoon and spend some more time looking at the beautiful scenery and homes that we'd learned about earlier. Would highly recommend this for anyone visiting Beaufort!

Kathy W.

Yelp
This was a wonderful tour and Kathy was very knowledgeable with subtle humor. The head sets worked great and we were able to learn a lot about Beaufort.
google avatar

Lindsay V.

Yelp
My husband and I did the carriage tour last minute. We were able to get on right away with no wait. Our tour guide was a very sweet older woman who was very very educated on the history of Beaufort. We saw some beautiful homes and scenery! I highly recommend it for a quick history lesson on the town! ***I like to take note on my reviews of any businesses that offer military discount for any fellow military members. Although they offer a discount, it is only $1. ‍ (hey, better than nothing!) So instead of paying $23 a person you get to pay $22..... in my opinion $23 was a lot to pay for this tour I'm not sure it was worth it for that price which is why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5.****

Deanne C.

Yelp
We had a lovely carriage ride. Our tour guide, Kathy was great. She was very knowledgeable and was a giod speaker.

Julie B.

Yelp
Beautiful tour! Super easy going staff and everything ran on time. Very knowledgeable tour guide and we had an absolutely gorgeous horse named Angus. You can tell the animals are well cared for and happy to work. I have been living in Beaufort since June and have never been to the neighborhood the tour took me to. Gorgeous! Highly recommend.

Cicely M.

Yelp
Our group of 6 plus two well-behaved pups had a great time with Kate and Angus. The tour was informative and well paced. I appreciate that they take good care of the horses and keep them out of the heat. The entire team was very personable.

Yelp
I booked a carriage ride for my wife and I for my wife's birthday over 2 weeks out through the sea island carriage company's website. My wife and I arrived 20 minutes early as instructed and saw a sign on the door stating they were closed due to heat and had been closed since noon, which was 4 hours prior to our arrival. We never recieved a call, text or email stating that the carriage ride was cancelled. Apparently if it is over 80 degrees, then the carriage company shuts down. Why would they evening take reservations past noon during summertime in Beaufort, SC? Horrible experience and customer service
google avatar

Yelp
Jennifer is an excellent guide who really knows her history. Really enjoyed this tour. Learned a lot and Angus is a beautiful horse!!
google avatar

Carleena H.

Yelp
Such an amazing way to learn about the history of this adorable town. Nicole was so nice and the girl who did our tour knew everything! She was awesome. I wish I remembered her name. The horse (Stucky) was so sweet. These girls know their history, their horses, and provide excellent experiences. Best thing we did while in town to learn about the area and see the sites!!
google avatar

Lauren C.

Yelp
We had only a few hours in Beaufort and this was the perfect way to learn more about it. We were on a tour with Guide and Driver Katie and her horse Angus. Katie was knowledgeable about this gorgeous town and it's stunning houses, and kept us well entertained. She addressed the care of the horses and told us a few quirky things about Angus. We all were satisfied that Angus was well cared for, and we loved him and her as well! Beaufort is a stunning town. If it has a "poor side," we didn't see it. Many stars have stayed there during filming of various movies. All in all, a wonderful experience!

Wendy G.

Yelp
Our guide was extremely knowledgable and the ride was fun and informative. I recommend a carriage ride through the historic district to all of our visitors. I give them as welcoming gifts all of the time. Wendy

Heather S.

Yelp
Wonderful experience! Definitely recommend! Lots of great knowledge to learn along the way! There are plastic pieces separating the seats for extra covid precautions.
google avatar

Adam L.

Yelp
Had a wonderful tour with Kate our driver and Angus the horse. Both were wonderful. This was better than any carriage tour we've ever taken. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Annie L.

Yelp
Jennifer was an excellent guide. Her love and knowledge on Beaufort history was inspiring. We've researched the area extensively and Jennifer had many additional facts that we would not have known otherwise. On top of all that, she was so kind and gentle with her horse. I highly recommend Jennifer and this company. It's a wonderful way to see Beaufort if you're a visitor or a local.
google avatar

Derek C.

Yelp
Visiting from the Washington DC area my friend/host suggested this for a fun and educational experience. Our tour guide and Honeydew, the horse, were great. As a volunteer at a draft horse rescue I'm possibly hyper sensitive to the care and use of horses. To my pleasure I learned that these 2 ton horses can easily carry three times their weight. Honeydew did not appear to be stressed or overworked. I highly recommend these tours and would do it again. My friend said this tour guide provided more historical info than she'd heard on any of her previous rides.
google avatar

L M.

Yelp
Wasn't sure about taking this tour. My son is stationed at MCAS and I wasn't sure he would be interested. Boy was I wrong, our guide had really interesting historical facts, great stories about old beaufort families and a lot of knowledge about the old houses. This and the kayak tour we took were my 2 favorite outings in beaufort

Jennifer B.

Yelp
These ladies do a great job and are so accommodating. Even during Covid, they take great precautions with clear shields between rows of the carriage and use ear phone devices so we could hear her amazing commentary. Oh and the horse is adorable!
google avatar

Jackie S.

Yelp
This tour was a great way to get a feel for Beaufort. The history was interesting, the guide was funny and the horse was treated with lots of love! We are looking forward to coming back and bringing our kids!

Yelp
I live in Beaufort now, but the first time I visited my fiancé here we went on a carriage ride together using Sea Island Carriage Company. It was/is the BEST way to experience the historic district of Beaufort. Really fun and relaxing. Since moving to Beaufort, we've taken friends and family on the ride, and we are so happy with this company. Our latest guide was incredibly personable and interesting. He had a great sense of humor and really added a lot of personality and character to the stories about the town. He was great with the horse too. And did you know that they have a "frequent rider" program? If you ride three times, you get lifetime free rides if you bring a paying guest. That's great for locals who want to take visitors on the tour. All in all, I think this is truly the best way to show downtown Beaufort to friends from near and far.

Wes M.

Yelp
We really enjoyed the carriage tour. The driver/guide (Kate) was terrific. This is the best way to see the antebellum homes and learning about their history and the history of Beaufort.

Caroline R.

Yelp
Great experience with this company. Everything was smooth and the tour guide was great. Would recommend.

Kellye M.

Yelp
We really enjoyed the educational tour and found our driver and horse friendly and awesome. Our horse, Bob, seemed really loved. Nicole was our driver. She was very knowledgeable and an actual original Beaufort -born and raised resident.

B. S.

Yelp
LOVE LOVE LOVE this tour. We have been on this over 6 times and seemed to be addicted! A new experience each time with each different tour guide. A relaxing way to spend some time in this lovely sweet southern town. We live nearby...drive over take a ride and go have a bit of lunch. Great afternoon! I do wish they has a frequent rider program..it gets a bit costly. We like to leave a generous tip so it adds up. BUT...it's sooo worth it! Don't miss the ride....

Mike F.

Yelp
Highly recommend this carriage tour. Guide is very knowledgeable and the tour is a wonderful introduction and overview of Beaufort. Coming from the west coast and having a very full schedule and little time, this tour was perfect. Comparable to the tours we enjoyed in Charleston and Savannah.

Catherine E.

Yelp
Our guide Debbie was a hoot and she told one amazing story after the other during the whole beautiful ride. This tour is one of the best tours I've ever been on. I highly recommend this adventure.

Carol L.

Yelp
This was a spur of the moment decision and so glad! Our tour guide, Charlotte was so informative and funny and was terrific with our horse, Max. The homes were gorgeous and there is SO much history in Beaufort! A must if you are in the area.

Yelp
I used to recommend this place and brought guests here all the time. The service was kind and friendly and the tour guides were obviously knowledgeable and passionate. Now the service is ABYSMAL and the last couple of tour guides missed some of the most important history of the town. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
