Yelp
Severely over-hyped and over-priced. A real shame when this could be such a Xanadu.
The location is perfect. Wedged between the swankiest part of downtown CPH, the harbor, and one of the most-covetted parks in town.
You can feel the expectation levels rise as you close in on the place, it looks amazing! A lot of people will enjoy sitting in the generous outside area, just for the aesthetics of it. And if you make do with coffee, wine or cocktails, you'd probably be quite satisfied.
The first time I was here with friends, we sat outside. We ordered and paid for our food at the bar, and took the little electronic keeper back to the table. When it lit up and beeped, we went to get our food, and when we were visibly confused about a missing platter, one of the chefs barked angrily that it was on its way. There went one star. Four women, four different dishes - none of us were quite satisfied, and one was even still so hungry after her meal that she ordered another one. That's just sad, considering the price. The food was okay, but nothing to write home about.
Flash forward some months, I swing by with my family on a sunny weekend day. It's cool out, so we go inside. The brunch looks nice but super pricey, so we go for 2x shrimp po' boys, 1x fish n chips, and a vegetarian platter for my 12 yr. old vegetarian. We have one drink each, and the total is more than if we went out for dinner at our favorite Thai. Ouch. We find a spot to sit, which is nice and has a view, but the acoustics are terrible and we can hardly hear each other without shouting. That's another star.
The fried shrimp in the po' boys is still raw despite having been battered and fried. It's tasty enough, but I'm not sure if it's supposed to be raw or cooked through with makes the experience a little exciting. Luckily there are no adverse reactions later in the day. There are fries and a lot of fresh greens to go with it. And a mango sauce which is tasty but doesn't quite match the rest of the platter.
The fish and chips are good, and plentiful! My eldest son is happy and can't finish it.
The vegetarian is forlorn. He's only 12, and very adamant about not eating animals or fish, and this platter was the only option for him. It's pretty scandalous. The price was 110kr I think, and all he got was fries, mushed peas, and the same greens as the rest of us. The greens have been washed, but they're not prepared in any way, so it's basically raw radishes with stalks, slices of raw striped beets, dill, kale and the like. No dressing or anything. It looked like the food we feed the neighbor's rabbit when they're out of town. That was it.
Toldboden must learn to do better for vegetarians. That was the third star to go.
TL;DR: Toldboden is fine for outdoors coffee/drinks. Inside acoustics are awful, the food looks pretty but it's terribly hit and miss with no good vegetarian options. Big spenders will probably enjoy the brunch if they employ headsets to communicate for the duration.
