I love discovering new places for afternoon tea, especially when they live up to my expectations. This is a wonderful little gem in the heart of Ventura!
My 16-year old daughter, her friend, and I stopped in for afternoon tea on a Saturday afternoon. From the street it's easy to miss because it's offset a little from the street... we had to circle back around, but found ample parking in front. We walked up to discover a quaint outdoor patio, shaded equally by plants and umbrellas, set with tables of various sizes. In the back is a rustic shelf of books with a sign that reads: Take a book, Leave a book. A live guitarist was playing softly in the corner, and the music, along with the soft trickling of the fountain, set an ambiance of peaceful serenity.
We were welcomed with a smile and, though we were a little early for our reservation, they seated us immediately.
Tea service consisted of a pot of the daily tea, two scones with jam and clotted cream, three finger sandwiches, a fruit tart, and a sponge cake. For the price it was a wonderful selection, and each item was delicious!
Service was consistently friendly and accommodating throughout our tea. Both the server (whose name unfortunately I forget) and the owner checked in on us to refill the tea pot, clear away finished items, and ask if we needed anything.
Afterward we visited the flower shop. Gloria, the owner, assisted us in choosing stems and we left with a lovely little bouquet of gorgeous flowers as well.
My daughter's friend said that if she lived nearby she would be at A Secret Garden Cafe all the time. I can see why. Although it is over an hour from my home, I definitely plan to return.
