This is a grand old hotel right on the waterfront in Brunnen (the main Brunnen boat dock is literally outside the front of the hotel). It's the sort of place you see belle époque celebrities coming to by boat. And you wouldn't be wrong: on the ground floor is a discrete sign listing the various minor and major political figures who have stayed at this place (from Victoria and Churchill to various minor royalty).
That list ends in 1963, perhaps because of a change in policies, but also perhaps because we live in a different era now, and the hotel's business now comes as much from meetings and tour buses. Indeed, its halls have a whiff of age and fustiness, and a renovation that left them with light sconces so ugly even our 8yo daughter commented on them has not done it favors.
All of this, however, is unfair to the place. Where it matters, the hotel has done a great job. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. They have astounding views (if you have a "mountain view" room and all you see is the hills behind town, crane your neck a bit and you should see the Grosser and Kleiner Mythens). The restaurants are modern. The breakfast is outstanding, with little touches that are almost knowingly ironic, like prosecco with vegetable juices on offer.
Places like this aren't known for their modernity, and one might expect menus that Victoria would have been equally at home with. Yet their dining menu is absolutely modern and the service, just like at breakfast, is outstanding: proper and solicitous, not what it could so easily have been (stiff or snooty). You also notice the hallways filled with old art and furniture, presumably leftovers from previous refurbishings. It all really grows on you. You start to feel a bit royal yourself. You almost wonder, if you stuck your wrist out at the wait staff, would they bow low and kiss it? You wonder, but you don't try it out.
In short: a delightful place, well worth the cost (which must be judged by Swiss standards), meeting and exceeding expectations, and worth a return visit.
