My fiancé and I spent a few days at the hotel to celebrate our anniversary, and overall we had a very lovely stay. We booked a special offer, three nights for the price of two, which made the experience even more appealing. The hotel initially drew us in with its stunning lake views and the promise of extensive spa amenities, both of which featured prominently on the website.
The hotel is beautiful in any season; however, during our winter stay the weather did affect how much we were able to enjoy the surroundings. Heavy fog frequently obscured the lake and mountain views, and on one occasion, we attempted a nearby hike that became unsafe due to the conditions. While this is in no way a reflection of the hotel itself, it is something future guests may wish to keep in mind when booking during colder months.
We stayed in the Executive Double Room with lake view and balcony, which is advertised as one of the most luxurious room categories. The room was comfortable and well appointed, though slightly smaller than we had expected, particularly given its reputation and historical significance. Nothing was lacking as such, but it’s something future guests may appreciate knowing. One definite highlight was the minibar: fully included and restocked daily, which was a very welcome touch :)))
I would also like to make special mention of Deborah at reception, who was exceptionally helpful throughout our stay. She went out of her way to answer our questions with warmth and professionalism, always with a smile, it truly made a difference.
There are two areas where we felt the experience fell slightly short of expectations: breakfast and the spa.
Breakfast, while pleasant, felt somewhat sparse for a hotel of this caliber. The selection included salmon and dried meat cuts, fruit, yogurt, bread, cereal, pancakes, eggs, and an omelette station. On paper this sounds generous, but for guests with dietary requirements, many of these options quickly become unavailable, leaving limited choices for a satisfying and filling meal. We visited at different times over several mornings and found the offering consistently modest.
The main disappointment for us, however, was the spa. We were not informed prior to arrival that the spa is fully nude and mixed gendered, information that does not appear on the website. While this may be customary in some Swiss-German spas, it can be uncomfortable for many guests and should be clearly communicated in advance. We also found it slightly awkward that staff members checked several times to ensure guests were nude, which involved peeking into the space. This made us feel uneasy.
We briefly considered booking the private spa suite as an alternative, but ultimately felt that the amenities offered did not justify the additional cost. As a result, we didn’t make use of the spa facilities much, which was disappointing given how central they were to our decision to book.
On a more positive note, we dined at the hotel restaurant one evening and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We opted for the four-course menu, which was excellent value and beautifully prepared. Our server was attentive and offered wonderful sightseeing recommendations, adding to an already pleasant evening.
Another great highlight was that the car park and electric vehicle charging station were completely complimentary, which made our stay even more convenient and stress-free.
In summary, this is a truly lovely hotel with attentive staff, beautiful surroundings, and many strong points. While the spa experience did not meet our expectations, we still enjoyed our stay overall and appreciated the care and hospitality shown throughout. Thank you Seehotel Waldstätterhof!
