On the way to the airport one afternoon, the taxi passed by the See's factory on La Cienega. What a great memory of departing from L.A., the scent of chocolates permeated the taxi & filled it with the most melt -in- your- mouth smell. It's a great place to be stuck in traffic.
This branch is one of my all time favorites. The staff greets me smiling, ever so courteous. Walking inside, I get a whiff of chocolates. I inhale deeply, reveling in the scent of being surrounded by chocolates.
As I look deeper within myself, it's due in part to being raised in a family of dentists. When I was a kid, my brothers & I would go trick-or-treating. After several hours going door to door in the neighborhood, we would return exhausted, home at last.
My dentist uncle would invariably be there. He would say, "ok, you can keep 3 pieces," then offer us a large sum of $ if we handed over our pillowcases yet still full of candy. Money talks, we accepted his offer, as we would take the $ & run to the store to purchase our favorite candies when he left.
Even if no sample was offered, I'd still purchase something here. I prefer nuts 'n chews. One of my friends commented, "you're just not the soft center type of person."
I asked the staff tonight, "do people ever get upset in here?" The staff replied, "well, for the most part, they come in smiling & leave smiling." Once in awhile they will scowl, as we run out of some chocolates. I inquired as to which chocolate do they run out of the most? The staff answered, "the scotch mallow." Just a piece of trivia.
Ahh, chocolates, one of life's great pleasures. See's Candies, one of life's eternal joys. My dentist uncle, one of life's great mysteries. I'll have to ask him, what did he ever do with those pillowcases of candies?
