I'm a big history buff but this site is disappointing, needlessly so. The visitor centre, though new, is rundown, rust on the cladding which is very dirty. The viewing tower somewhat uninviting and the windows caked in dirt. The museum beneath is ok but again, lacks imagination so it's rather dry. It's also in one part devoted to the nearby shipyard and it's history. This deserves more than a few panels on a stairwell and it is a missed opportunity. A separate exhition is needed, either on site or adjacent so as not to lose the focus of where we are. The roman excavations themselves could do with a bit of love and attention. The paths between the different buildings are mossy and weedy which makes it less obvious what is historic and what is merely wanting for maintainance. The bathhouse replica was roped off with ropes that were clearly weathered and must have been in place a long time. All in all I found it a rather depressing and saddening experience. It could be so much more. It's an absolute gem of a place let down by poor presentation. Some suggestions, more signage outside - what there is, is faded. More interpretation to help visitors visualise it. And also link with the nearby ruins, mile one of Hadrians wall for example. What was life like for the people garrisoned there. The people who lived along side. All we have are a few dry displays. The one big plus were the staff. Friendly, happy to chat and clearly enthused by their venue. I can't praise them highly enough.
