Bundaran HI (short for Bundaran Hotel Indonesia) is a large roundabout located at the intersection of M.H. Thamrin Street and Sudirman Street in Central Jakarta. At the center stands the Selamat Datang Monument (Welcome Monument), one of Jakarta’s most famous landmarks. --- 📜 History & Meaning The monument was completed in 1962. It was built as a symbol of hospitality to welcome international guests during the 1962 Asian Games. “HI” comes from the Hotel Indonesia, a historic hotel located near the roundabout. --- 🚉 Access & Transportation Beneath the roundabout is Bundaran HI MRT Station (now officially called Bundaran HI Bank Jakarta Station), part of Jakarta’s MRT system. Above ground is the TransJakarta Bundaran HI Astra bus stop, which has been renovated with two floors, a waiting area, toilets, a prayer room, and a skydeck for viewing the monument. The MRT station and bus stop are connected by stairs (access for people with disabilities is still limited). --- 📸 Activities & Attractions Bundaran HI is a popular spot for photography, especially at night when the lights and fountains are turned on. The skydeck on the upper floor of the bus stop offers a great view of the Selamat Datang Monument and the city skyline. On Sunday mornings, the area becomes a hotspot during Car Free Day, when the streets are closed to vehicles and open to pedestrians, cyclists, and outdoor activities. Nearby attractions include major shopping malls such as Grand Indonesia and Plaza Indonesia. (ChatGPT)

Get inside the bus station and you can climb to the second floor where the view is great. The name means Welcome Monument, apparently Sukarno commissioned this to welcome people to Indonesia. The statue and roundabout itself is an important landmark for locals to, serving as venue for an event or even demonstration. In short, a cool statue with some significance to back it up.

Such a great place that could be the best place to hang out with friends and family, because of Sunday is the car-free day. You can enjoy the clean environment without a car. Also, you can try the test of mouth worming street food. Remember that car-free starting with morning 6:00 till 11:00.

We went to Jakarta for the 2017/2018 New Year and this monument is the place to be.. The area is closed to all traffic and 1000's and 1000's of people congregate to watch the fireworks and cheer in the new year. The atmosphere was fantastic. Indonesian people are so friendly. We set of some fireworks, watched a live show on the stage and wandered around soaking in the atmosphere. I would say that this is the best event NYE experience that I have ever had. We attended the Pullman NYE party which is right next door. Soon at we counted out 2017 we walked into the street and watched all the fireworks. Absolutely fantastic experience.

Enjoyed the car-free Sunday. It is a really really nice experience. The streets around this landmark are like having a festival. The vibes are nice. It is good to be an early bird on Sunday.

It’s a nice monument and the surrounding tall buildings are also impressive. During the day it’s a very busy junction with traffic but thanks to the traffic lights there are enough breaks to allow you to see the monument properly and give some photo opportunities. There’s plenty of other things to make a walk to the area worthwhile, such as the shopping malls, but I also found it entertaining observing the adjacent police station which was a hive of activity. It’s a welcoming area and doesn’t feel too touristy, so well worth taking the time to pass through.

Iconic roundabout in Jakarta, lovely to pass. Great 5star hotels around and the better malls, Grand Indonesia and Plaza Indonesia. Unfortunately nearly always full of traffic.

Jakarta's Landmark This monument is certainly impressive, but you need to go on Sunday morning in order to get close to it. The monument is surrounded by a fountain and the traffic swirling around the roundabout.
