Selogriyo Temple (740 MASL)

Temple itself isn’t special, nor big- just 1 small empty temple, but most impressive is the way to get there. Rice fields on the hills, stunning nature. Great place for nature lovers. Trail isn’t difficult, nor long(1,5-2km) are 2 options: paved road, or trail through rice fields. We made it in sports sandals. Of course price is 50k IDR(glad to be foreigners) but this is what we need to deal with. On the way there is coffee place- they made decent coffee.

We went during the monsoon season in December and are the only ones there. Entrance Fee of 50k Rp for Foreigners Likely used to supplement the villagers for intrusion of their farms. Serene walk to the temple and admire the terrace Padi fields. A nice coffee place near the top and certainly recommended for a short break and to enjoy the peacefulness of the area. Temple is recently re-built and somehow characteristic of the temples in Yogya. The road to the ticketing point is only a one way lane and upslope which can be very dangerous during peak season. The village might want to consider improving this as they are collecting a large amount of entrance fee.

The main reason why people go to Selogriyo temple is for the picturesque views of the rice terraces on the way. There is an easy cemented path from the parking area to the temple itself. I would not recommend descending down to the terraces itself unless you are of moderate fitness, and especially not during the rainy season. We did; and the terrain was extremely steep, slippery and challenging. Walking along the narrow steppes can be dangerous and we did slip and fall into the rice paddies a few times (fortunately, we did not fall into the rocky stream as that could be catastrophic). Our guide did get lost on the way (we do not fault him, as the terraces are large and can be confusing). Not too sure if the well-trodden path we were supposed to walk along would be better. Nonetheless, the walk along the cemented trail was easy and beautiful. Docking 1 star because of how far the temple is from Yogyakarta city.

Surely worth a visit to another Buddhist temple. This one stands al alone on a beautiful spot and the walk through the rice fields is marvelling. This is not a very touristy spot, surely not in November. But a precious chance to spot daily life and work on the rice fields. Highly recommend!

The road to up is winding and narrow and you have to continue walking from the end road up about 1.5 km. The view however is breathtaking. The temple itself was being reconstructed. Even than the view for me is far more important to see, not to mention friendly natives I met along the walk. I was struggling for the bathroom and one neighbor let me in just like that. Parking is very limited, if possible go with a local driver so you don’t have to worry about parking.

I was amazed by the stunning sceneries along the way to this temple. So green and yet so tranquil. The road for motorbike and pedestrians are well made and maintained. I could not describe more how beautiful this area. And this tiny temple is worth it . On top of the hill ,just if we are lucky enough to enjoy when the sky is clear. Mount Sumbing is the view that we can not miss at all. Parking lot for motorbike is upstair just near to the stairs to the temple but for the car you need to park a little bit far and then you can either walk or take rental bike that costs 25.000 IDR for one way or 40.000 for returns. Toilet is available near by the second gate just before the temple. And it is clean enough. Perfect timing to visit is during dry season ( April to October) or morning when it is not cloudy. I am sure I will be back here to take more pictures.

This was a nice quiet walk through terraced fields towards a secluded temple in the hills. Worth the drive here and highly recommended!
