It was interesting to learn that the city of Kingston was the first capital of New York.

This is more of a reflection on the makers market happening today at the Senate house then on the building itself. I might come back for a tour sometime. Clearly, Kingston has indeed turned into a little Brooklyn and I was disappointed to see only a few local makers at this event. A bit crowded as well, I was glad I had my mask.

We visited during covid and in the morning shortly after opening so it was not too busy. We had a tour without other guests which was nice. Our guide was nice and knowledgeable. She humored us and answered/discussed our questions with us which was fun. Lots to look at here. Only thing that I wish were different is upstairs in the museum there are photos of what the senate house looked like in the early 1900's/late 1800's and the decor is very different and seems much more involved than what is currently in the house. It would be nice to see it similar to those photos which were beautiful. Very nice place in town to visit.

We learned about the formation of the first New York State government (19 men crammed into a room in a 100 year-old Dutch colonial house) and the subsequent burning of Kingston by the British. Well worth a visit.

Yelp
Lovely historic home and museum. Parking was a little far and you have to cross a busy street but it's worth it.

Yelp
Nice little museum, and excellent tour of the home of the first New York State Senate. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the site and the latest historical theories about. She was friendly and polite and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Yelp
Nice family stop. A definite when visiting Kingston. Two floors with galleries of local painter and historical items and info about the area. Tour guide was great and very well informed. They have a parking lot behind the building so don't pay for street parking.

Yelp
Incredible museum. Wonderful, knowledgeable staff. Don't miss this if you love your country. The museum has great exhibits on Dutch colonial life. The building was where the New York senate first met in 1777. The house was burned by the British.

Yelp
Recently,I visited Kingston, after last being there in 1969 and I enjoyed the Senate House and the excellent tour I was given of the Senate House which was originally built in the late 17th Century. The Senate House was the home of Dutch settler,Wessel Ter Broeck and housed New York's first Senatorial sessions. This stone structure epitomized the Dutch Protestant lifestyle in 17th Century Kingston. Its small adjoining museum had an excellent array of portrait and landscape paintings by early American painter,John Vanderlyn, including delightful paintings of Niagara Falls.
