Detroit’s Best Coffee Shops, Spring 2025 | Eater Detroit

"Sepia Coffee Project has taken over the space that once housed the Gathering Coffee Co., marking the first brick-and-mortar space for the burgeoning Black-owned roaster. Sepia partners directly with Black and brown farmers throughout parts of the Americas, Africa, and the Indian Pacific and has named its collections of roasted beans after the areas of Detroit that once served as hubs for Black life. Expect single-origin offerings from the Paradise and Blk Bottom collections, or Sepia’s specialty-grade offering, Harmonie. Select an espresso beverage from the hand-painted menu on the wall, pick a pastry from a countertop display case, or grab a bag of beans and other coffee-related merch to brew some of your own at home." - Serena Maria Daniels

"The Sepia Coffee Project is a micro-roastery that aims to connect Black and brown communities through coffee. Founded in 2021 by Martell Mason, it sources specialty coffee beans from under-represented regions. Was visiting from Dallas for work. Chose to come by because of the ethos of the shop. Then I saw the reviews, and it was done. The staff was very friendly and open. The cafe had a part factory/part coffee shop look and feel, which I loved. Industry meets The Earth, y’know? I had the Sepia roast, and it was light yet bold. Totally held its own. The taste was smooth. It was so damn good, I decided to buy a bag. I had a savory scone and chocolate chip cookie too, and yeah- everything was delicious. Coming here was a total jackpot. I’ve been home for over two weeks now, and I have to get another bag (ordering online).

I visited from Tokyo, Sepia was highly recommended to me, I was not disappointed 😊 Great place to learn about speciality coffee! They have some of the best beans in town. I tried the Ratnagiri Estate, Peaberry and Ethiopian. Both were great! I bought the Ethiopian, and enjoy it everyday on cold drip. Notes are prefect 👌 Sometimes on a rainy day I make a pour-over, the acidity is great 😊 Highly recommend for coffee lovers ☕

Beautiful space & amazing coffee! I love the options available, very diverse menu and cold beverages available. They roast their own coffee and it comes through with every sip!

The best Iced Mocha ever. This place is the "Gem of Detroit". It is the very epitome of cool. The coffee is exceptional. Very friendly people, food is superb and the location is easy to get to. Plenty of parking on the street. Rustic and cool interior. I love this place.

This Black-owned neighborhood coffee is so good. I visited before to try a few months ago but I visited recently with my mom who is a coffee connoisseur. Our iced mocha coffee is top notch just enough chocolate but not overpowering the coffee. The atmosphere is clean, open and airy. Will be back!

Cool vibe, friendly service and worth going to even if it's off the beaten path. Very reasonable drip coffee price and it tasted great. I also bought the Abdo Aba Mecha Ethiopian coffee beans and the taste of the coffee from it after I ground the beans for pour-over was amazing! Definitely Top 10 beans I've ever had. And I now live in the Minneapolis area and have traveled all around the world. Coffee beans are my drink souvenir wherever I go.

Yelp
Best coffee in the D. Experts in coffee, cordiality, and chill. Martell is a coffee Guru, a shaman in modern wear, healing and reconnecting our community with the art and culture of coffee. What keeps me coming back to Sepia is the brilliance and hospitality of Head Roaster Martell Mason. And, the sophisticated and bold flavors chosen for the roasting collection. Their Dalia roast is the best cup of coffee i have ever had in my entire life. "It's just coffee; hot bean water..." a naive version of myself thought before my palate was delighted by the depth and richness of that very first cup. Time and time again i return to reassess, "was it really, that good?" And the answer is always YES. 'Twas like comprehending and resonating with the lyrics to a love song for the first time; or, that grateful feeling of warmth from the Sun after a long grey winter. The Sepia project is a privilege to have in this city. I've Always been greeted with warmth from the staff and a comfortable environment to stay and work, catch up with a friend, or simply just to sit, sip, enjoy and rejoy my cup of Black magic we call coffee.

Yelp
Soft Opening Review: Sepia is finally open! I have followed along with the owner's journey for a few years and so happy that we have this new coffee shop in town. The current shop is on East Grand on the strip kind of near the Hot Bones Pilates and Chroma. The plan is to eventually open in Highland Park so I'm not sure if they will keep this location or just move to HP. Well the menu may be typical for a modern coffeeshop (coffee, espresso drinks, matcha, chai, etc.), the beans are what really shines here. There's a lot more information about it on their social media about the beans and roasting, I won't pretend to be an expert, but just know, that's the star of this shop. The space is warm and cozy with big windows looking out on the boulevard. Lots of nice coffee gifts and gadgets, bags of coffee, and cooler drinks for sale. To note: the only milk served here is oat milk which I've never really had in a coffee, I think when warmed, it gives a grassy flavor that might over power the coffee and kind of water it down at the same time. So next time, I'll probably just get a black coffee. But if you love oat milk in you coffee, then you'll be in heaven. They also have pastries. Service is impeccable and very nice. Oh, a free street parking! I got Front Row Joe when I went but YMMV.

Yelp
6/5 stars if I could. This place is LEGIT! Possibly one of the best cappuccinos/Americanos I've ever had. All code is roasted on site and they clearly take the art very seriously. If I lived in Detroit, I'd be here every week. Not to be missed!
