The Best Affordable Hotels in Tokyo

"Neighborhood: ShibuyaPrice: From $242 per night Just steps from its famous “scramble” crossing, Sequence is for streetwear savants looking to be in the heart-of-it-all Shibuya. The lobby level begins in the rooftop park of a four-story luxury complex, and rises another dozen floors above the city with prim, modular rooms. Most rooms are under 200 square feet, but have picturesque views of the busy neighborhood (but we're sure you'll spend most of your time outside exploring, anyway). For those that aren't early risers, it's worth noting that Sequence starts check-in at 5 p.m. and check-out at 2 p.m." - Paris Wilson

Sequence Miyashita Park

"Why book? Uber-social Sequence is the crown atop the latest urban renewal project in heart-of-the-action Shibuya, just steps from its famous “scramble” crossing. Set the scene Art installations, a skate park out back, and polished concrete all around—Sequence is as much a hub of youth culture as it is a beacon for slumber parties upstairs. The backstory Perhaps one of the biggest changes to Tokyo during the pandemic was the revitalization of the north side of Shibuya station, which included a four-story complex housing luxury boutiques, restaurants and a sweeping rooftop park. The Sequence’s lobby level begins in said park, and rises another dozen floors above the city with prim, modular rooms. Rooms Most rooms are under 200 square feet, but picture windows to the urban sprawl below help make the spaces feel larger. It’s worth noting that Sequence is trying something a little different: check-in is at 5pm and check out is at 2pm, which caters to party-prone guests who don’t want the stress of having to wake up after a big night out and scramble to sort their luggage in the morning. Food & drink Count a colorful breakfast buffet that runs until noon, and SOAK, the rooftop bar on the 18th floor, among the food and beverage offerings. We’re partial to the coffee shop-cum-lobby; a preferred gathering spot for studying locals. Neighborhood Shibuya is where you want to be for easy access to trendy neighborhoods like Shimokitazawa or Nakameguro, and the area itself runs the gamut from high-end to sleazy, promising every version of a fun day shopping or an even funner night out with countless izakayas and clubs scattered all over." - Brandon Presser

Overall we were pleased with this hotel. It’s in a fantastic location, first of all. We were in one of the triple/bunk bed rooms on the south side of the building and had an AMAZING view of Shibuya, especially at night. Train noise was not at all a problem. Yes, we could hear trains. But in a bustling section of an enormous city you WILL hear noise. The thing is, the trains are practically the only thing we CAN hear, despite the insane Saturday night crowds, and they are a quiet whooshing clickety clack for a few seconds when they go by. Much quieter than our apartment in Washington, DC. Perhaps the trains are louder on the west side of the hotel, but we are on the lowest floor of rooms and can see the trains from our room as they go by. The beds are surprisingly comfortable, and there are lots of outlets. The shower is great — a choice of two showerheads, temp adjustable separately from water pressure, and LEGENDARY water pressure. Like, way better than I have at home. Naturally there is also an awesome Japanese style toilet; my nether regions have never been so clean. Cons: the air conditioning is not very powerful. When we arrived it was off, and the room was something like 27 degrees C, which is toasty. It took a day and a half to get down to our preferred temperature, but to be fair there are three of us being mammals generating body heat, breathing, and of course showering, in a very small room. Also, laundry facilities, while present, are barely adequate. There are two machines for the whole building, so you have to hover to get one, and they are combo washer/dryer units, which never dry well at all. So be prepared to festoon your room with damp laundry after it’s done washing and “drying”, even after pulling the driest items and putting in the extra 100Y coin for an extra 30 min drying time. ||Special call out to my new hero at the front desk! We are doing a highly illogical thing: taking the Shinkansen to Aomori and then a ferry to Hakodate, instead of going the whole way on the train. We want to spend 4 hours in the “view seats” and see some ocean scenery in the Kaikyo Strait. Well, it turns out it’s extremely difficult to book those seats from the US. As of the day of our flight to Japan, a little over a week before our ferry adventure, that route was not yet showing up on one of the international third-party websites, and it is never possible to book view seats on the other. So we got the assistance of a LOVELY front desk staff member who helped us with the Japanese website the morning after we checked in here. And now have our tickets!||Side note: two restaurants in the neighborhood that I’d recommend are “Hole in the Wall” for wafu spaghetti and Mo Mo Paradise for shabu shabu. Both were outstanding! Yes, Mo Mo is a chain; it’s basically “The Melting Pot” for shabu shabu. But the food is excellent quality and it’s friendly to newbies!

If I would need to pick my best "budget friendly" Hotel, this would be it. The location is probably the best in Tokyo. Located right in the heart of Shibuya, nothing is farther away than 5 minutes. Because of the height of the building in nearly every apartment you have great views. I first went here 2024, not knowing what I picked I was positively surprised. So much so, that I returned 1 and a half years later to visit this establishment again. Can only recommend!

The best part of the hotel is the late check-out and the view in some rooms. I wish the check-in was one hour earlier.||Everything still felt new even though the hotel is about five years old now. The room was clean but there wasn't much storage if you want to make yourself at home. There isn't any seating aside from the bench in front of the window. However, sitting by the window while sipping tea or something is a wonderful experience.||There is a swanky bar on the roof and a nice restaurant on the 5th floor. The cafe next to the lobby is usually busy with people on laptops. With the restaurant and bar, you don't have to leave the hotel to have a nice night out in Shibuya. Shibuya is crazy after 11pm. ||If your room faces north, west, or south, you'll hear the train tracks and there are a lot of trains. You should be ready with earplugs.||The lobby staff was competent, but I didn't ask for anything extra. They know enough English to get you into your room. There was one that had very good fluency.||No public bath is available to soak after a long day. Expensive, but all Tokyo hotels are expensive nowadays.

Incredible hotel and definitely worth the price! The room was large and fit our (my wife’s and my) three total suitcases. We stayed for about 5 nights and were comfortable. The room did get a little hot at times because the AC may have a default setting, but it wasn’t bad or bothersome. The view in our room was incredible, as you could see the entire park and we had a corner room, which we didn’t know we’d get when we booked it. The room was very clean and was serviced about every other day. There is a cafe within the hotel, and there is a food hall that is only about 50 yards away from the inside of the hotel. You just walk through the park to get there. Also, it’s about a 10 min walk from Shibuya Station, which isn’t bad at all, and there’s a bus stop about 3 min away. Location was great, and hotel was great. The concierge also helped send our luggage to Kyoto, which was about $45 (based on the weight and size of our three suitcases). The ONLY downside to this hotel is there are no laundry machines, but we went to a laundromat that was a 10 min drive away.

I picked the hotel primarily for the location and it was perfect - easy walking distance to Harajuku and Shibuya Crossing etc. I was a bit worried about the train noise the other reviews mentioned and came prepared with ear plugs, but they weren't necessary - our room was quiet enough for a good night's sleep. Hotel staff at the front desk were helpful and friendly. Late check-in and check-out actually was an advantage for us. We didn't have to rush in the morning and had a place to relax before heading out to catch our late afternoon flight.

We stayed here for two nights and loved being in the heart of Shibuya. The location is fantastic — right in the middle of everything with an almost overwhelming number of shops, restaurants, and sightseeing options all around. Public transport is just around the corner, making it easy to get anywhere in Tokyo.||The check-in process is designed to be smooth and automated via self-service kiosks, but in practice, it was a bit cumbersome and slow. Once we got our keys, we made our way to a clean and modern room with two low beds, a street view, and a good-sized bathroom. The beds were very comfortable, and the room temperature was perfect for a restful sleep.||There’s a stylish Starbucks right by reception, which added a nice touch to the overall vibe of the hotel. Although we heard occasional noise from emergency vehicles at night (understandable given the central location), the room was otherwise calm and quiet.||We checked out the two laundromats on-site — both were available and looked convenient, though we didn’t end up using them. We didn’t use any of the other hotel services, but for a stylish and centrally located stay in Shibuya, this hotel is a great option.

Google
This hotel is more like a hostel but it unfortunately is overpriced. Don’t do it. Not worth the money they charge. Loud, noisy rooms. Small, uncomfortable beds with only 1 pillow. Minimal amenities like I mentioned: hostel-like. Room needs to be more clean. I visibly see garbage sitting in the hallway outside.

Stayed here for a week and had a great experience - staff were friendly and accommodating and the location is excellent. We booked a twin room, it was spacious and bright, only criticism is the limited hanging space for clothing. There is some traffic noise due to the central location but this didn’t bother us, the beds were comfortable and we both slept well throughout the stay. Would return to stay here again!

Yelp
the floor map is lowkey confusing because there are so many stores in the 3 floors and it's not all the same layout. but hella food spots and shopping to do in this center, especially with it being so near the shibuya crossing !

Yelp
Miyashita Park / Shibuya (Tokyo) -- I've seen several YouTube videos about this urban space/shopping mall in the middle of bustling Shibuya. Opened during the pandemic, one vlogger praised it, while another felt it was an overrated concrete slab. Jamie W. and I were mostly in the latter camp. While it made a good first impression, the three-floor complex lost its luster quickly. The narrow walkways and lack of seating contributed to our disappointment but no more than the Disney-saturated stores and confectionery kiosks. The only place we enjoyed was Hainan Jeefun, which served excellent Hainan chicken rice (review: https://yelp.to/t1LqdOiCVX). We admit we didn't try the side street of eateries with the picnic tables. That looked somewhat promising. However, we reserved our biggest disappointment for the ballyhooed top floor. This was the expected green space, which featured a skatepark, a rock climbing wall, and a volleyball sand court. Yes, everything but any sense of bucolic beauty. Unlike NYC's High Line, the unsheltered expanse felt barren and isolated. This place needed more gardening and less useless shops. RELATED - Exploring Japan? Yelp
What a great place to have access to especially since Shibuya lacks any kind of greenery or open spaces. I stayed at the Sequence hotel (highly recommended) and this park was steps from the coffee counter in the hotel. Seeing that I was visiting Tokyo in December, Christmas was in the air, and in the park. Keep in mind, this is a public park and because of that you'll see locals snapping pictures with their Starbucks cup in hand that will surely find a home on Instagram. Yep, there is a Starbucks in the park if you're craving a little taste of home. The park itself will take you only a few minutes to cover but if you make your way downstairs you'll find a plethora of shopping, some high end, some more affordable, but if that's not your speed there is also a food court and a handful of other local restaurants. I truly loved this place and the location!

Yelp
Great place to relax, eat, and have the kids run around. Wheelchair and stroller accessible. Bathrooms are located in almost every floor.

Yelp
A brilliant open space in the heart of Shibuya on the roof of a mall. It has a skating area, beach volleyball court and a bouldering wall plus lots of space for just walking. As it's located along the JR line, you can spend a lot of time just watching the trains past or simply people watch while having a soft serve from the mobile vans.

Yelp
This is a newer rooftop park located in the heart of Shibuya! With a large food court and plenty of notable brands in the shopping mall below, this is definitely a recommended stop after you visit the Shibuya Crossing! We stayed at the Sequence Miyashita Park Hotel and we were able to get a room with a beautiful night time view of the whole park with the skyline of Shibuya in the background!

Yelp
They turned a beloved skate park into a park and a mall. Good or bad? I actually think it's pretty cool, considering I kept hearing it was supposed to be a big hotel. Although closed at the time of this review, as of Aug. 4th, there will be a few eateries/food booths that I think many people, especially foreigners and visitors tired of eating sushi and ramen (if that's possible) might be interested in, such as: Eggslut, Panda Express, Taco Bell, and Jamba Juice, among a slew of other food spots from the US. In addition to some small boutique shops there's several high end designers shops. There's also a small area that may serve as a mini art exhibition/museum, which at the opening week featured the art of street artist KYNE, who specializes in simple art of young women, which he originally posted as stickers all over major Japanese cities. The top of the mall is a open area featuring a "beach" volleyball area, a climbing wall, and a skate park, which the original Miyashita Park was famous for. Personally, although I loved the original park, this new version of a mall and park combined is better than a hotel that I thought was supposed to go up.

Yelp
This place is pretty great. Mostly transition and you have to pay, but nonetheless, inspiring.
