This Is the Best-kept Secret to Planning a Safari in Africa, According to a Travel Expert

"During the green season (particularly January–March) this part of the Serengeti becomes the center of calving activity and one of the Great Migration's key moments, with thousands of wildebeest calves taking their first steps. Visitors experience intimate wildlife encounters and dramatic migration behavior with far fewer crowds than in peak months." - Maija de Rijk-Uys

There's So Much More to East Africa Than Its Wildlife — Like an Active Volcano and a Collapsed Caldera With a Pearly Blue Lake

"Appreciate the enormity of Serengeti National Park from a helicopter, offering views of the Arugusinyai River gorge, Lake Eyasi, Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano, and Empakaai Crater." - Liz Wheeler

Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge

"Perched on a ridge with views over the savanna, this lodge exudes traditional African architecture with grass-thatch huts that resemble the rondavel dwellings of a Masai village. Accommodations are charming with natural stone bathrooms and private balconies. Located in Serengeti National Park, guests can see the annual wildebeest migration or the Big Five."

Our stay at the lodge during our safari was truly exceptional. What made the experience even more memorable was the staff. They were consistently attentive, friendly, and genuinely committed to making our stay perfect. I especially appreciated how thoughtful they were about my dietary needs, especially the chef Daniel. Living with celiac disease can make travel challenging, but the team went above and beyond to ensure that every meal was safe and satisfying. They prepared gluten-free options with care, double-checked ingredients, and always reassured me that my well-being was a priority. Thanks to the combination of remarkable design, comfort, and truly exceptional service, this lodge became one of the highlights of our trip. I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable safari experience.

Fantastic place. The huts (rooms) were comfortable, bar had entertainment every night plus the food was great. Staff was friendly without being pushy. Really liked you had to have an escort after dark because of the wildlife that abounds. I saw dik dik's, rabbits, monkeys, and water buffalo that live at the lodge. Always remember that TIAB.

We stayed at the Serena hotel Serengeti in August 25 as part of a safari tour. It is a remarkable hotel and we would highly recommend. The rooms and bed are extremely comfortable. There is no air conditioning but it’s not necessary given the altitude. The food is extremely good - even for people with dairy or gluten allergies. This included incredible braised lamb, which was just one of many options over the nights. The staff are exceptionally friendly, even among Serena hotels. They feel genuinely passionate about meeting and engaging with guests. There is even an on-site doctor who was called several times in the evening to support guests for a nominal USD fee. The location requires guests to ring reception to get an escort after dark to and from their rooms to the main hotel, due to potential encounters with animals - we saw buffalo, but it’s not unheard of for hyenas etc to wander into the premises. Highly recommend!

I stayed two nights but I wish I could spend more nights there. The view from my room is spectacular and immense. I regret I didn’t take one hour hiking/walking tour with the park ranger. I will definitely do it on next time.

The day I arrived there was controlled burning happening so it was very smoky, there weren't any views and it was hard to breathe. Thankfully the next day the smoke cleared and the views were great. The room doesn't have a/c or heat, only a fan and blankets. There was no sheet, only a comforter on the bed. There also wasn't any hair conditioner, or an outlet in the bathroom. Meals were included but apparently drinks aren't, and the food was just ok. There's a small store onsite with jewelry, souvenirs and a very small selection of toiletries. You can use USD and credit cards here.

When 16 Australian photographers hit the Serengeti for the last 3 days of our 15-day East Safari, we were so excited to see the migration just a few kilometres from the Serena Serengeti resort. We thought we had seen it all, but in 3 days, we saw hippos, lions, leopards, and the natural phenomenon of mother nature, the migration.|We came back each day to this amazing resort with a sunset viewing point. Our dining table was outside overlooking the grounds with sensational food, our waiter John catered for our every needs. Our bungalows were a delight.. wildlife wandered the outskirts ..our baloon ride on the last day was perfection ..|Serena Serengeti.Thank you for a smashing time.||

This place is very nice, lovely, maintained grounds, and the rooms were very comfortable. Food was excellent, with a huge selection to choose from. Staff were very good, friendly and helpful. Our group of 4 had no issues during our stay.

Architecture, shape typical of the Maasai's huts. Well Equipped. Amazing views over landscape. The food was of excellent quality. A wide variation. The Staff was polite and helpful. The front of desk can improve on friendliness, they are not very welcoming.
