This Is the Best-kept Secret to Planning a Safari in Africa, According to a Travel Expert

"During the green season (particularly January–March) this part of the Serengeti becomes the center of calving activity and one of the Great Migration's key moments, with thousands of wildebeest calves taking their first steps. Visitors experience intimate wildlife encounters and dramatic migration behavior with far fewer crowds than in peak months." - Maija de Rijk-Uys

There's So Much More to East Africa Than Its Wildlife — Like an Active Volcano and a Collapsed Caldera With a Pearly Blue Lake

"Appreciate the enormity of Serengeti National Park from a helicopter, offering views of the Arugusinyai River gorge, Lake Eyasi, Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano, and Empakaai Crater." - Liz Wheeler

Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge

"Perched on a ridge with views over the savanna, this lodge exudes traditional African architecture with grass-thatch huts that resemble the rondavel dwellings of a Masai village. Accommodations are charming with natural stone bathrooms and private balconies. Located in Serengeti National Park, guests can see the annual wildebeest migration or the Big Five."

We stayed there during our self drive safari around Tanzania and had an amazing time. 5 star service, 5 star amenities and an amazing view from the pool. The room was also amazing (room 2), spacious and very comfy. Views from the room balconies were magical. The staff was also extremely kind and we had an amazing self drive safari with Steven and also we did the nature walk with a ranger and guide which was also a highlight and we recommend 100% Overall an amazing place to stay! Maybe the only thing we did not like were the prices of the Pina Colada at 20 USD which is crazy 🤣 (same price as Switzerland!!) but hey you are in the middle of the most beautiful national park in Tanzania so why not. Drive to reach the hotel was long but worth it! Elephants, buffalos giraffes and many other wildlife just minutes from the hotel!

Our stay at the lodge during our safari was truly exceptional. What made the experience even more memorable was the staff. They were consistently attentive, friendly, and genuinely committed to making our stay perfect. I especially appreciated how thoughtful they were about my dietary needs, especially the chef Daniel. Living with celiac disease can make travel challenging, but the team went above and beyond to ensure that every meal was safe and satisfying. They prepared gluten-free options with care, double-checked ingredients, and always reassured me that my well-being was a priority. Thanks to the combination of remarkable design, comfort, and truly exceptional service, this lodge became one of the highlights of our trip. I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable safari experience.

We stayed at the Serengeti Serena Lodge for part of our safari, and the accommodations were wonderful. However, the next day, we were in a tragic, fatal car accident in the middle of the Serengeti, and the Serengeti Serena Lodge, despite us being paying customers, provided absolutely no help, were not willing to engage with the situation, and refused to send a car or even try to find someone dispatch an ambulance to help us. The level of apathy displayed was shocking. So, while the facilities were nice and the drinks were good, do not expect these people to provide one single ounce of assistance if you are stranded at the time you need it most.

Had very high expectations for this hotel, but unfortunately our stay was ruined even before arriving there. Our agency booked 2 nights there, and on the day we should stay there we were announced that they overbooked and we'll be moved to another place, in a tented camp, 1 hour further north, which made us loose a game drive in Central Serengeti and the opportunity to see leopards. The next day, when we finally arrived at the hotel and asked what happened, they didn't give me any explanation. Further more, the staff was very arrogant, both at the reception and in the restaurant, favorizing groups that probably tipped them upfront. The rooms were not ready when we arrived and the pool was quite dirty, probably that's why there was no one in it. Overall, we did not have a nice stay here (on the second night, as on the first we were not welcomed) and I do not recommend it.

I had an amazing experience here. The staff is great, especially Grace Uhan. She’s a chef that makes delicious pasta for you on the spot. She’s kind and it always brightens my day to see her smile and chatting with her. Grace is a gem of this Lodge!

I stayed two nights but I wish I could spend more nights there. The view from my room is spectacular and immense. I regret I didn’t take one hour hiking/walking tour with the park ranger. I will definitely do it on next time.

Fantastic place. The huts (rooms) were comfortable, bar had entertainment every night plus the food was great. Staff was friendly without being pushy. Really liked you had to have an escort after dark because of the wildlife that abounds. I saw dik dik's, rabbits, monkeys, and water buffalo that live at the lodge. Always remember that TIAB.
